I sAEETY BAZOIM Application fi1ed Ju1y 19, 1923.- Serial No 652,576.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS citizen or the United States, residing at Martin, iii-the county of iVe-akley and State or Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety razors and has for its object the provision of a razor which may be produced at a less cost than razors now on the market, which. may be used with equal facility in either hand, and:
- tion.
In the drawings: a a Figure 1 is a planview of a safety razor constructed according to my invention; 'Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is scenes longitudinal section 5 Fig. 4 is a detail planview of the guard; Fig. 5 is an enlargedend view of the device, and
Fig. 6 is a detail plan View of the blade. In carrying out my invention I employ a base which is arcuate in form, as shown in Figure 5, and from one end of which extends a handle 2, the said handle being knurled or otherwise roughened, as indicated at 3, whereby a firm grip may be easily obtained. The handle extends along the longitudinal axis of the base and is preferably formed integral therewith so that the device may be held in the same manner as an ordinary razor is held and the blade manipulated to obtain a draw out upon the beard, as will be readily understood. The base is provided with openings therethrough along its medial longitudinal line and one of said openings is located close to the end of the handle to receive astt1cl4,tl1e opening being slightly countersunk on the under side of the base so that the end or the rivet may be upset and the protruding portion of the same removed by the use of any convenient and eficent tool so that a smooth flush surface will be provided on the bottom of the base. The stud is constructed with an an- S. GOFF, a
nular shoulder as indicated at 5 whereby the insertion ofthe stud in the opening pro vided therefor will be limited and the stud permitted to project above the base-to the proper extent, the circumferential surface of the stud being smooth so that the blade and the guard may be easily fitted thereover. r \1 the free. end of the same and receives a stud or post 6 which is at its upper extremity, threaded, as shown at 7, to receive a thumb nut SWhereby the blade and the guard may be clamped to theb ase, the remaining portion of the poster. stud being sm'ooth so that injury will not be caused to thepost nor to theblade nor theiguar'd in assembling the parts. The blade 9 is a flexible metal plate of proper form anddimensions to it upon the basefan'd to proj eet somewhat beyond'the' side edges'of the same,as shown in Fig. 5, the side edges of the blade being sharpened, as indicated at 10. The blade is provided with openings 11 and '12 to fit over the stud 4 and the post 6 as will be readily understood and the guard 13 is provided with similar openings land 15. Theguardcon-v sists of a metal plateappro'ximately the same thickness as the base 1 and given a permanent arcuate form corresponding to the areaate form of the base so that when the guard is placed in position on the blade and the nut 8 turned home, the blade will be flexed and firmly secured with its cutting edges in rectilinear lines. Along its side edges the guard is constructed With teeth 16, the extremities of which extend beyond the cutting edges of the blade in the usual manner.
In assembling the parts for use, the blade is first engaged over the stud 4 and the post 6 and the guard is then engaged over said elements so as to rest upon the blade. The thumb nut 8 is then engaged upon the post and turned home against the guard so as to secure and flex the blade against the base, as shown and as will be readily understood. If the nut be turned fully home, the edges ofthe blade will be in close. contact with the teeth of the guard and cutting of the flesh Will be thereby positively avoided. If, however, a particularly close shave is desired, the nut may be slightly loosened whereupon the blade will be unflexed to some degree and its edges will be spaced slightly from the teeth of the guard so that the blade ne other opening in the base islocat-ed near may then cut the beard closer to the skin. It will be noted that one side of the handle 2 is disposed in thesame longitudinal plane with the bottom of the base 1 and forms a continuation thereof, while the other side of said handle is disposed in a plane above or in advance of the top of the thumb nut 8. By forming the handle and base in this manner said base in conjunction with the handle provides a continuous flat surface for the razor when it is placed on a table or other support and should the razor be placed on the table in a reverse position, that is to say, upside down the thumb nut 8 cannot come i-n c o nt act with the table owing to the fact that the upper side of the handle projects beyond the same and forms, in ef fect, a housing for'the thumb nut. It will also be noted that the inner end of the handle at its junction with the base is expanded laterally and inclined or beveled in the direction of the baseIl so as not to offer any surface projection while at the same,
time assisting in shedding or deflecting any lather which may accumulate thereon'during the shaving operation.
It will be readily noted from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, thatI have provided an exceedingly simple razor which may be produced at a low cost and which may be assembled for use, quickly and may be disassembled and cleaned with facility. My improved safety razor may be handled in the same manneras the ordinary razor is usually handled so that no fatigue Will follow from its use and it maybe used in either ha Having thus described my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A safety razor comprising a base having a solid handle of uniform diameter projecting from one end thereof with one side of, said'handl-e disposed in the same longitudinal plane with the bottom of the base for the entire length of said handle and forming a continuation of the base, the other side ofthe handle at its junction with the base being expanded laterally and inclined in the direction of said base, a cutting blade carried by the base, a guard fitting over the blade, and means for clamping the guard and blade in position on the base, the clamping Ineans lying wholly inwardly of a longitudinal plane touching the last-mentioned side of the handle.
2, A safety razor comprising a transversely curved base having a solid handle of uniform diameter projecting from one end thereof with one side of said handle disposed in the same longitudinal plane with the bottom or the base for the entire length of said handle and forming a continuation of said base, studs rising from the base, one of wh ch is threaded, a blade having openmgs to receive said studs, a guard resting on the blade and through which the studs project, and a thumb nut engaging a. threaded stud for clamping the blade and guard in position on the base, the outer surface of the thumb nut lying wholly inwardly of a longitudinal plane touching the other side of the handle. In testimony whereof I aifix my signai te- THOMAS s. GOFF. s-
