PATENT o'FFice.
CHARLES M. WEST, or CHICAGO, rumors,
SCAFFOLD on STAGING.
Application filed April 4, 1923, Serial No. 629,860. Renewed; September 10, 1925.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be itknown that I, CrrARLns M. WVns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Qhicagmin the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scaliolds or Staging, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scaffolding or staging particularly designed for use by interior decorators or analogous artisans, and an object of the invention is to provide a portable staging which may be moved about at the will of the user to permit acoess to the diiierent parts of a room, building or the like, and one which is adjustable as to height, for supporting a platform at a desired elevation to enable the workmen to work in comfort on the side walls and ceiling of a room.
Another object of this invention is to provide a sta ing or scaffold as specified which is collapsi le so that it may be taken down and collapsed when not in use and so that it may assure a compact form for transportation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device as specified which includes drop cloth supporting arms carried thereby and extending laterally therefrom for supporting a drop cloth about the staging.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a top plan of the improved scaf- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved scaffold or staging.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 4-t of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail section of a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved scafi'old or staging coinprises corner posts 1 which in the present drawings are shown as constructed of angle iron or sheet metal, however, it is to be understood that the corner posts may be made of wood or solid pieces substantially square in cross section as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawingsjwithout departing from the spirit of this invention.
The corner posts 1 have horizontal foot pieces2 atta hed liereto or formed thereon taken on the to which ball bearing casters 3 of approved form areattached to permit the staging to be easily moved about. when in assembled position. The posts 1 are'provided with a plurality of vertically spaced openings 1 in their wings 5 and 6, and the openings 4 in these wings are adapted to receive bolts 7 for connecting the rails or horizontal connecting strips 8 to the respective posts for connecting them in rectangular formation as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Wing nuts 9' are threaded on the bolts 7 so as to facilitate the detachable clamping of the rails or strips 8 to the posts. Diagonal braces 10 are provided which are connected to the posts 1 through the medium of bolts 11 and wing nuts 12, below the horizontal rails or connecting strips 8, and the diagonal braces are also connected to the rails 8 by l means of bolts 13 and wing nuts 14.
When in assembled position, suitable platform boards (not shown) may be placed across the upper edges of the rails 8 to provide a platform upon which the workmen stand. Drop cloth supporting arms 15 are provided and they ar connected to the posts 1 by certain of the bolts 7, whichserve to connect certain of the rails 8 to the posts, as
clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. The drop cloth supporting arms 15 comprise the outwardly extending horizontal portions 16 and the down turned attaching portions 17 which engage between the rail 8 and a portion of the respective post 1 to which it is attached.
By the provision of the wing nuts, and the plurality of openings arranged in vertically spaced rows, the rails 8 may be quickly and easily adjusted toany desired elevation within the limits of the height of the posts 1 to permit convenient and comfortable working conditions for the workmen and furthermore it will be apparent that the device can be readily collapsed or taken apart and placed in a compact form for storage or transportation.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings a slight modification is shownin which a solid substantially rectangular post 1' is provided. The caster 8 differs shghtly from the caster 3, in that it comprises a socket member 30 which i mounted over the lower end of the post 1 and pinned thereto by means of a pin 31. A caster wheel carrying head 32 is swivelly connected to the socket 30 by means of a. lt 01' rivet 33. The lower end of the socket 30 and the upper surface of the head 32 are provided With ball races 34 in which bearing balls 35 ride.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is Staging and scaffolding comprising a plurality of corner posts, horizontal platform supporting rails, bolts detachably and adjustably connecting said rails to said posts, drop cloth supportingarms, said drop cloth Supporting arms having down turned zit-- taching portions engaging between certain of said rails and said posts, said drop cloth supporting arms being attached to the posts by means of the rail attaching bolts, diagonal braces adjustably and detachably connected to said posts and detachably connected to said rails, and casters carried by said posts.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
CHARLES M. WEST.
