Application filed aprirla, 1925.; serial, No. 24,2427.,
To aZAZJLVULomv t may/4001106712.' Y y f Be itknown that I, VICTOR E'BLACK- BURN, a citizenof the United States,v residing at Bellview, in the county of Curry and StateV ofy New Mexico have vinvented new and useful Improvements in Radiator Protectors, of which thel following is a specification. f y
This 'nvention relates tov an attachment for an internal combustion motor, the general object of the invention being to `provide means for preventing the radiator in the motor from freezing in cold weather.V
This invention also consists in certain other featuresrof construction y'and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding `parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a view showing theinvention applied to a motor vehicle. l
Figure 2 vis a plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a front view of the device with the front part thereof swung downwardly.
VFigure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4. l
Figure 6 is a section on line 6-6 of Figure 4. 1 v
Figure 7 is a sectional view nozzles.
,Inl these views, 1 indicates a casing which is adapted to be placed vagainst vthefront partof theradiator of a motor vehicle with an internal combustion engine. This casing is held in place by means of a bracket 2 of one ofy the which is fastened to the upper endr of the casing and which has a hole Vtherein tofit over the radiator filling spout. Brackets 3 are secured to the bottom of the casing and are fastened to-the bottom of the radiator by the turn buttons 4 which engage slots 5 Thus the device is detachably held at the front of the radiator. The casing is provided with a front cover part 6 which is hinged tothe casing at .its lower end as shown at 7. and which is held in closed ,fall within the scope of claims.
by theupins '8; which lpass; through tubular projections 9 on the 'cover part and on the casing. The casing is provided with an vopening 10 in its lower end for the vad- `mission, of air. kA plurality of straps 11 are Vsecured in spaced relation to the inner wall of the casing and these straps support strips 12 ofxasbestos or the like, the vstrips being' of gradually. increasing width as shown in Figure 4. n A plate 13 is fastened to the lower ,end of the covery part 6 above the opening and has its ends curved and this plate is covered with a sheet 14 of asbestos or the like Wrhich'actsto` catch fuel fallin from the strips 12 and to prevent' this fue from dropping through the opening 10.` The air is caused torcirculate through the casing by this plate which acts as a'baliie. plate.
A pipe 1-5 extendsjinto thecasing through."
the top thereof and this pipe is provided witha transverse part 15 which has `.its ends bent downwardly and attachedV to nozzles 16 which are so arranged as to sprayr` fuel uponthe strips 12. The pipe 15 is connectedto a supplyl tank 17 which may be held -in the cowl of the vehicle by the cables 19 kwhich. have theirV ends Vconnected to the eye bolts'20 on the runningboard ofthe vehicle. The flow of oil through the pipe is controlled by a valve 21.
From the-foregoing 1t 1s seen;k that whenv the deviceis in operation the oil-or gasoline will Vflow tothe nozzle from the tank 17 through the *pipes 15 and 15y and thus bey sprayed upon the asbestos st'rips12.'v The strips are lighted by opening the vcover and i then the cover is closed so that'the'heatproduced by the burning fuel will heat thecas-l` ing and thus prevent freezing of the water yin the radiator. Thel entire device is provided with a lining 22. of asbestos or the like anda. sheet 23`of the samematerialis placed aroundthe nozzles.
It is thought from the vforegoing description that the advantages and. novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
ico
I desireV it" to be understood that I mayy make changes in the construction and in the combination and varrangement of the several parts, provided that' such changes What I claim is :-v
the appended f asbestos supported by the easing, nozzles in the casing above the Wicks, a fuel supply connected With the nozzles and means for preventing the fuel dropping from the Wicks 5 from passing :from the casing.
2. A heater for radiator comprising a f casing, means for detaohably connecting the same to a radiator, a hinged front part for the casing, Wicks of gradually increasing 10 width supported on the inner Wall of the Wloks for spraying the same With the fuel` a fuel supply connected With the nozzles, Y
the bottom of the casing having an opening therein, a plate having curved ends Covering the opening and spaced above the same so that the air can enter the casing through said opening and a lining of asbestosftor the casing and for the pipe.
VICTOR E. BLACKBURN.
