MACHINE FOR PACKING PAPER ROLLS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVALIRID LJUNosTRoM, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Matfors, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in hlachines for Packing Paper Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved machine for packing paper rolls.
The object of the invention is, chiefly, to provide a machine by means of which the paper rolls delivered from the paper machines in the manufacture of printing papers for journals and similar purposes can be cheaply and effectively packed in packing paper and thus be sufficiently protected during storing and transport.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the kind stated having means for gluing together the windings of the packing paper, thus securing a very strong and hard package.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists, chiefly, in the provision of a packing machine, comprising a frame, a pair of rollers journalled parallel to each other and at some distance from each other in said frame and adapted to support the paper roll to be packed, means for driving said supporting rollers, and a stopping device for said driving means adapted to stop the driving means when the desired thickness of the package has been obtained.
The invention comprises, furthermore, various constructional details all of which shall be described herebelow with reference to the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figs. 1 to 3 one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 1 is a partly sectional side view of my improved packing machine, Fig. 2 is a top view thereof and Fig. 3 is a plan of same details on alarger scale. Fig. 4 is a side view of a modification of the gluing device.
Referrirm now to Fig. 1 to 3, 1 is the frame of the machine, at the bottom of which are provided two inclined tables 2, 3, between which are journalled two rollers 4, 5 at a dis tance from each other so that the paper roll 6 to be packed can be freely placed on said rollers. Between the rollers 4, 5 a roller 7 is journalled carried by two arms 8, 9 which are secured to a shaft 10 having a hand lever 11 by the operation of which the packed paper roll 6 can be turned over to the in clined table 3 and be removed from the machine. The roller t and, if desired, also the roller 5 is driven by means of a chain transmission or other suitable transmission from a shaft 12 on which are provided a fast pulley 13 and a loose pulley 1 1. The driving power is transmitted to the machine from any suitable source of power by means of a belt. The shifting of the belt from the loose pulley 1% to the fast pulley 13 on starting the machine is elfected by means of a hand lever 15 which by means of a link 16 is connected with a plate-spring 18 carrying the belt-shifter 17. The upper end of said plate spring is bent at right angles and the lower end is secured to the frame 1 in such manner that it tends to move the belt shifter and the belt to the loose pulley. The spring 18 is, preferably, twisted and bent in such manner that it presses against the edge of a table 19 having right opposite the fast pulley 13 a notch 20 which is engaged by the spring 18 so that the latter is retained, when the belt shifter is thrown over to the fast pulley 13. For releasing the spring 18 from said notch 20 when the machine shall be stopped a slide 21 is provided-in the table 19, the front end of said. slide having an oblique surface 22 adapted to press out the spring 18 from the notch 20 when the slide is moved in such manner that its oblique surface engages the spring. Said slide 21 is connected to one end of a lever 23 journalled on a pin 231, the other end of said lever being connected to a slide 25 actuated upon by a spring 24: and having a roller 26 engaging one side of a toothed wheel 27. Said wheel 27 is provided with two oblique projections 28 and 28 which are adapted to actuate the roller 26 twice for each revolution of the toothed wheel 27 so that the roller 26 and the slide 25 is pressed back and the slide 21 is moved towards the spring 18 of the belt-shifter and releases said spring. The toothed wheel 27 is driven from the shaft 12 by means of a variable belt transmission consisting of a step pulley 29 secured to the shaft 12, a belt 30 and a step pulley 31 secured to a shaft 32' which by means of a toothed wheel 33 is connected to the toothed wheel 27. By shifting the belt 30 the ratio of gear between the shaft 12 and the toothed wheel 27 can be varied and thus the number of revolutions be controlled, which the paper roll 6 is rotated from the starting of the machine to its stopping.
The packing paper which is wound on to the paper roll 6 is in the constructional form shown in the drawings obtained from three packing paper rolls 3%, 35, 36 which are mounted on shafts 37, 38 and 39 respectively journalled in the frame 1 and the paper webs are drawn over a common guiding roller 40 to the paper roll 6. Said paper webs can have the same width as the paper rolls to be packed, or a somewhat larger width, or some of them may be narrower and so positioned that they only leave strengthening strips for the ends of the packing. The shafts 37, 38 and 39 are provided with loaded band brakes 41, L2, l3 respectively which when the machine is running are operative but are automatically released when the machine is stopped. The releasing of the brakes is effected by power transmission from the spring 18, said spring being by a link 44, a bell crank lever and wire transmissions 46, 1-7 and 48 connected with the braking levers so that the loading weights are raised, when the spring 18 throws over the belt-shifter to the loose pulley.
For the purpose of obtaining a tight wrapping of the packing paper a lever 50 loaded by a weight i9 is secured to the shaft 10, said lever tending to rotate the shaft 10 so that the roller 7 is constantly pressed against the paper roll 6.
The machine is, furthermore, provided with a gluing device by means of which the packing paper webs or any of them at will can be coated with a pasting or gluing substance so that the several windings of the packing paper are glued together. Said gluing device is constructed as follows. 54: is a roller which is adapted to rotate in a trough 55 containing a solution of a pasting or gluing substance, as for instance a solution of water-glass, and thus carry over the gluing substance to another roller 56 over which the paper web or webs to be glued are passed. For instance, the rolls B l and 35 can each supply an edge strip and said strips be drawn over the roller 56 for obtaining a coating of gluing substance, or the roll 3%- can deliver a web of essentially the same width as the roll to be packed and said web be drawn over the roller 56 while the webs from the rolls 35, 36 are drawn past the gluing roller 56 directly to the guiding roller 40. The roller 54 is, for instance, driven by means of a transmission 57 from the shaft of the roller 4 in such manner that its peripheral speed will be about equal to the peripheral speed of the roller 4 or that of the paper roll 6 to be packed. The roller 54 is accordingly started and stopped at the same time as the roller The same efiec can of course, be reached also by driving the roller 54 by means of a transmission directly from the shaft 12.
The gluing substance is thus transferred from the roller 5st for instance to the paper web 58 byaneans of the roller 56. For preventing the parts of the roller 56 which do not become covered by the paper web from being covered by a non-desirable thick layer of gluing substance, the roller 5 is provided with one or more adjustable scrapers 59 which remove the gluing substance on the corresponding parts of said roller. From the roller 56 the paper web is drawn to the guiding roller 10 and here combined with the other web or webs, if more than one paper web is used for the packing. For improving the guiding ,and also, if necessary, press together the glued paper web with the other web or webs a pressure roller 60 is, preferably, provided for cooperation with the guiding roller 40. For facilitating the feeding of the paper web or webs the roller 40 is, preferably, driven, for instance by means of a transmission 61 from the roller 54-. the said transmission being, preferably, constructed in such manner that the roller 4:0 obtains a somewhat smaller peripheral speed than the roller 4 or the roll 6, whereby the paper web is stretched when it is wrapped on to the roll 6.
For enabling packing without gluing, if desired, a guiding roll 62 is provided over which one or more of the paper webs can be drawn directly to the guiding roller 40. In
ach case no paper web is drawn over the gluing roller 56.
It may also be desirable that the gluing can be made continuous or discontinuous at will and especially it is suitable that the first winding of the packing paper wound on the roll 6 is unglued inasmuch as it otherwise when its edges afterwards are folded over the ends of the paper roll would glue together be several windings in the paper roll itself.
Such controlling of the gluing operation may be effected by means of an adjustable device for periodically raising the roller 56 out of engagement with the roller 54: or by a device for periodically raising the paper web out of engagement with the roller 56. A de ice of the former kind is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing said device being constructed in the following manner. A cam disc 64 is secured to a shaft 63 and operates the roller 56 by means of a lever 65 and a wire transmission 66 so that the roller 56 can be raised out of engagement with the roller 54. The cam shaft 63 is driven, for instance from the shaft of the toothed wheel 27, by means of a transmission 67 with the same speed as said toothed wheel. By using exchangeable cams of different sizes on the cam disc 64; it is possible to regulate the periods during which the roller 56 is raised and during which it engages the roller 54 and thus control the periods during which gluing shall take place. If the cams are fully removed from the disc 64 the roller 56 will constantly engage the roller 54 so that gluing takes place at all windings. If on the other hand a cam is used which corresponds to one half of the periphery of the cam disc the half number of windings will be unglued and the other half number will be glued, and so on.
It is desirable that the machine is started and stopped twice for each packing operation, viz. firstly for feeding a suitable length of the paper web or webs before the paper roll to be packed is placed in the machine and secondly for the packing operation proper. For said purpose the toothed wheel 27 is provided with two stop projections 28* and 28 as above stated, of which the projection 28? effects the stopping when a paper roll has been packed while the projection 26 after a new starting of the machine effects the stopping when the paper web or webs has been fed to the desired length for the next paper roll to be packed. If thus for instance six windings of packing paper are wrapped on to the roll 6 and it has been found desirable to feed a length of the paper web corresponding to one winding before the paper roll to be packed is placed in the machine the first release of the driving means should accordingly take place when the wheel has been rotated about 1/6 of revolution and the second release when the said wheel has been rotated further 5/6 of a revolution.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The machin is started by turning the hand lever 15 to the right from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig.
2. Bythis operation the driving belt is by means of the belt shifter 17 thrown over to the fast pulley 13. The paper web or webs is or are now fed between the rollers 40 and 60 until the projection 28 operates the roller 26 thus moving the slide 21 and releasing the spring 18 whereupon the latter immediately throws over the driving belt to the loose pulley 14 so that the machine is stopped. The paper fed by said operation is now laid on the inclined table 2 and the rollers 4, 5 whereupon a paper roll 6 to be packed. is rolled up on the table 2 over the paper web until it bears on the rollers 4, 5. The free end of the paper web is then laid around the roll by the operator which then again starts the machine by means of the hand lever 15. The paper roll 6 is now rotate-"l, driven by the roller 4 and the packing paper is wound onto the roll. The roller 7 presses during this operation effectively against the roll 6 and at the same time the paper webs are stretched by the acti n of the brakes 41, 42, 43 and the rollers 40 and 60 so that a tight winding of the of the packing paper will be glued. The
packing operation is continued until the projection 28 engages the roller 26 and moves the slide 21 whereby the machine is again stopped. The packing paper web is then cut, glued at the end whereupon the paper roll by means of the lever .11 and the roller 7 is raised so much that it rolls out from the machine along the table 3.
F 4 shows a modification of the device for periodically bringing the gluing device out of operation. In this modification a lever 69 is journalled on a pin 68 and one arm of said lever is loaded by a weight while the other arm supports a roller 70 over which the paper web 58 to be coated by glue is drawn. When the lever is in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 4 the paper web is in contact with the roller 56 while the paper web when the roller 7 O is in the position shown by dotted lines, is raised out of contact with the roller 56. The shifting of the position is effected by means of an arm 71 connected to the lever 69 and periodically acted upon by a cam 7 2 secured to a shaft 7 3 which is driven in the same manner as the shaft 63 in Fig. 1. As long as the cam 72 engages the arm 71 the lever 69 is held in such position that the paper web is in contact with the roller 56 but as soon as the cam 7 2 has passed the lever 71 the loaded lever is swung so that the roller 70 raises the paper web from the roller 56.
It is evident that the invention is not limited to the constructional details above described and shown in drawings. For the fast and loose pulleys for starting and stopping the machine any well-known frictional or clutch coupling may be used which is automatically released when the machine has wound on the desired number of windings of the packing paper to the paper roll. Instead of the variable speed gear between the driving shaft 12 and the wheel 27 a variable speed gear can be used between the driving shaft 12 and the roller 4. For the packed can be freely placed thereon, means for rotating one of said rollers, shafts ournalled in the frame and adapted to support packing material, brakes at said shafts, and a device adapted to stop the machine when the desired number of windings of the packing material has been Wound onto the paper roll and simultaneously to release said brakes.

Machine for packing paper rolls, comprising a frame, a driving shaft, a power shifting mechanism for controlling the operation of said shaft, a wheel driven from said shaft, a projection on said wheel adapted to operate said shifting mechanism, rollers adapted to support the paper roll to be packed and to rotate it, a transmission from the driving shaft to said rollers, shafts adapted to support packing material, brakes on said shafts and means for releasing said brakes.
3. Machine for packing paper rolls, comprising a frame, rollers adapted to support the roll to be packed and to rotate it, means for starting the machine, means for automatically stopping it at predetermined intervals, shafts for supporting rolls of packing material, brakes at said shafts, and means for applying said brakes when the machine is started and to release them When the machine is stopped.
4. Machine for packing paper rolls, comprising a frame, rollers adapted to support the roll to be packed and to rotate it, means for starting the machine, means for auto- .matically stopping it at predetermined intervals, shafts for supporting rolls of packing material, brakes at said shafts, means for applying said brakes when the machine is started and to release them when the machine is stopped. and hand-operated means for removing the paper roll from its seat on the supporting rollers when packed.
5. Machine for packing paper rolls, comprising a frame, rollers adapted to support the roll to be packed and to rotate it, means for starting the machine, means for auto matically stopping it at predetermined in tervals, shafts for supporting rolls of packing material, brakes at said shafts, means for applying said brakes when the machine is started and to release them when the machine is stopped, and a gluing device for the packing material.
