ROOF COVERING.
Application filed August 26, 1925. Serial No. 52,601.
`To all whom-it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES ELMER Hoon- ER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of, Tampa,.in the county of Hillsborough and State of Florida, have invented certain lnew and useful Improvements in Roof Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in roof coverings ofv the class which comprises a plurality of and it consists in the lcombinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the inventionv is the provision of a roof covering of the character described which comprises a plurality of novel rooiing units arranged in courses with the respective units of adjacent courses disposed in staggered relation with adjacent shingles of adjacent courseslapped and locked both to each other and to the roof sheeting so that the exposed portions of the shingles will be held tlatwise in the roof construction and will be held securely against curling upward, warping or becoming' loosened as a result of exposure to the weather and to winds `or like stresses.

The shingle and he locking strips for the flaps of the shingle comprises-a roo'tn unit'. Al plurality ofthe roof units are used substantially as follows in forming a roof covering.
A starter lio strip 7 .having a Width-greater v than the length of the flaps 2 but less than the width of one of the improved shingles is secured on the roof sheeting 8 along the e-aves of the roof. The starting strip preferably is formed of the same material as the body of each of the im roved shingles.
A lower course of t e improved shingles thenis placed on the roof sheeting in position to overlap the startin strip and with the flaps 2 at the lower si e's of the bodies of the lower course of shingles and substantially flush at their ends with the lower edge of the starting strip 7. The web or attaching portion 5 of the locking strip for each flap 2 of the shingles of the lower course is secured on the underlying starting strip and to the roof sheeting by a nail 9 which is projectedY through an opening l0 in the attaching portion 5 through the starting` strip into the sheeting so that the attaching portion 5'of the locking strip extends transversely of the associated fla 2 beneath the end portion of the flap. Tlie end portions 6 of the locking strip then are upstanding at the side edges of the associated iap 2 but are bent inwardly and downwardly onto the a 2 to secure the latter againstupward isplacement from the roof sheeting. The locklng strips are made of a suitable bendable material which will not corrode easily, such as zinc, copper or like metal.
Each shingle is formed with slits 11 extending transversely of the shingle intothe body 1 at the corners of the cut-outs 3 and 4 and therefore at the inner ends of the side walls or edges of the flaps 2. The shingles 0f the Second course are arranged in overlapping relation to the shingles of the first or lower course so that the clamping ends 6 of the locking strips for the flaps 2 of the second course willI extend upwardly through the slits 11 at the corners of the cut-outs 3 and at the corners of adjacent cut-outs 4 of the underlying shingles, the nails 9 which secure the attaching portions 5 of the locking strips for the\flaps of the shingles of the second course in .place also extending throughthe bodies of the shingles of the lower The extremities of the vclamping portionsofithe locking strips for the yflaps 2 of the second course are bent inwardly and downwardly onto the associated flaps which thus will be locked to the bodies ofthe underlying shingles, as well as to the roof sheetin 1 The respective shingles of the two adjacent courses referred to -will be secured in place in the manner described with the' :flaps or exposed portions thereof disposed in staggered relation.` The remaining course of shingles will be laid in the same manner as the second course, the flap' portions of the shingles of adjacent courses be` .lng disposed instaggered relation'and the shingles of each course overlappirg the bodies of the shingles of the course next therebelow. The nails 9 will be completely covered by body portions of the shingles and only the extremities of the clamping ends 6 0f the locking strips will be exposed to the weather.
It will be manifest that I may make use of morevthan one nail 9 for each locking strip if I so desire without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Also, the locking strips may be of any desirable width.
Many modifications and adaptations of the form of the device which is illustrated in the drawings may be. provided and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A shingle of the'lock down type having a body formed with an extending Hap portion and with slits in the body at the inner ends of the sides of said flap portion, and a fastening device adapted to be secured to an underlying shingle and having portions extending through said slits for clamping the flap portion of an overlapping shingle onto said first named shingle.
2. A shingle ofthe lock down type having a body formed with an extending flap portion and with slits in the body at the inner ends of the sides of said iap portion,a and a j substantially U-shaped locking strip having flat 'web portion adapted to be secured in place under the body of said shingle on a portion of an underlying shingle and having upstanding end portions adapted to extend through said slits in straddling relation to the Hap portion of an overlapping shingle and to be bent inward and downward onto the flap of the last named shingle to secure the latter in place on the body of the first named shingle.
` 3. A shingle having a lbody formed with a plurality of parallel extending flap portions and with slits in the body at the inner ends of thc'sides of said flap portions, and a substantially `Ushapcd locking strip for each flap portion, said locking strip having a web portion adapted to span the Vdistance between adjacent slits in the shingle or in adjacent shingles of the same course and having upstanding end portions extending through said adjacent slits and being bendable to secure a flap portion of a shingle of the course next thereabove in place on. said shingle or adjacent shingles of the first named course.
