UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL P. LOVEMAN AND HERMAN H. LOVEMAN, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEME'NTIN FARE-REGISTERS.
, Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,013, dated November 17, 1874; application filed October 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMANUEL P. LOVE- MAN and HERMAN H. LOVEMAN, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Fare-Regit ter and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is an elevation, partly in section.
The invention relates to boxes which not only register on an inside dial-plate the number of fares taken by a car-conductor, but simultaneously strike an alarm that notifies each passenger that a record of his particular fare has been made.
Theinvention consists in novel means whereby the conductor can make his register and strike the alarm in a more rapid and com'enicnt manner than heretofore, the same being first hereinafter fully described and then point ed out in the claim.
A represents the box, which may be held by strap, or, for additional security, also by a pin, and which contains the usual clock or any preferred mechanism for turning the pointers over the dial-plate, and the usual sonorous metal, upon which a hammer strikes. B represents v the spring-lever, which actuates both the alarmhammer and the registering mechanism, and that is now caused to move against the tension of spring singly. We employ two levers, 13 O, for this purpose, they being arranged on opposite sides of the box, attached together, and the two connected at their outer ends by a chain or other continuous connection, 1).
Heretot'ore, in order to operate the'single lever with one hand, the conductor was under the absolute necessity of holding the fare-box with the other before he could apply the requisite force.
By our invention the thumb or finger of one hand may be kept in the fold of pendent chain, and can always exert the desired power upon the levers without using the other, which is usu ally necessary to hold the tickets or money.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is- The combination, with a fare-registering and alarm mechanism, of the levers B (J and their rear connecting-chain D, said levers being also connected at their front ends, all as and-for the purpose specified.
EMANUEL P. LOVEMAN. HERMAN H. LOVEMAN.
