Be it known that I, JACOB BALDNER, a citizen of the United States, residin uat Xenia, in the countyof Greene and tate l of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to dispensing-appal ratus for plastic and semi-fluid material,
such as greases, paste and analogous substances, and particularly to means b which such materialsv are. discharged un er uniform pressure with minimum effort. y The object of the invention is to simplify the structure as well as-the means and mode of operationY of dispensing apparatus, whereby they will not only be chea ened in construction, but will be more e cient in 0 use, positive in operation, uniform in action, easily operated and unlikely to get out of repair. A
A further object of the invention is to provide a dispensing device applicable to 5 the original packages or containers of the material whereby such containers may be utilized as reservoirs until the supply of material is discharged, thereby obviating thenecessity of transferring such material D from the shipping packages to the dispensing device. y
With the abovepriinary and other incidental objects in view as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention i consists of the features of construction, the 'parts and combinations thereof, and the mode of operation or their equivalents as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cask or barrel to which the .present invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a front plan view of the dispensing apparatus, detached from the reservoir or container. Fig. v3 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig.'4 is a transverse sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.' Figs. 5 and 6 are'side elevations at right angles one to the other, illustrating lthe use of a rectangular reser-voir in lieu of the barrel shown in Fig. 1, and heretofore described, and also a different form of alternative motor and hand operated driving means.

The base or housing 2 is provided with an upstanding flange 3 by which the apparatus is detachably connected to the cask or container 1. This upstanding flange 3 defines a receiving pocket or opening 4,
` the bottom of which comprises a plurality of parallel semi-circular grooves or'recesses 5, communicating with concentric bores or circular passages 6, which extend beyond the receiving opening 4. Located in each of the ockets 5 and exores or passages 6 is a series of revoluble spiral conveyors 7. These conveyors 7 extend a sufficient distance thru the passages or bores6 to afford ample lbearing therein for the conveyor screws, while at the opposite end these conveyor screws 7 are provided with trunnions or drive shafts 8. These trunnions 8 extend thru the terminal wall of the receiving recess 4 and into a pocket or chamber 9 vformed in the housing 2, adjacent to the receiving opening 4 in which are located a plurality of intermeshing gear pinions semi-circular grooves or 1 0, mounted upon the respective shafts or trunnions 8 of the conveyor screws. The trunnion shaft of one of the conveyor screws is extended beyond the housing or base 2 as indicated at 11 to afford a collar or drive connection for the series of conveyor screws 7. These conveyor screws 7 may be rotated either by suitable motive power, or by hand operation, as is found most convenient. In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the Shaft extension 11 is shown provided with a bevel gear pinion 12, with whichv meshes a second pinion 13 upon a crank shaft 14, to be manually rotated by the crank 15, to actuate the conveyor screw 7. This crank shaft 14 has been shown mounted iii a bracket 16 rotatable upon the.. shaft extension 11, whereby the crank shaft 14 may be adjusted to any convenient radial position in relation with the driving shaft extension 11, while maintaining operative driving engagement between the bevel gear pinions 12 andl 13. A retaining cli or 'support 17 has been shown attache to the Cask 1, with which the crank shaft may be engaged and supported in upright position when not in use.
In addition to the manually operable driving mechanism before mentioned, the power shaft extension 11 is further provided with agear pinion 18 meshing with a driving pinion 19, actuated by any suitable driving motor as at 20. It is to be understood that the motor drive connection disclosed is for illustrative purposes only, and that any other form of driving connection such as a belt or chain drive or a connection to an explosive engine or hydraulic motor may be substituted therefor. The intermeshing gear pinions 10 within the pocket 9 will of course drive the conveyor screws in reverse directions. The succeeding helices are therefore reversed.

passages or bores 6 into a discharge chamber 20 in the head of the housing 01 base 2, which discharge chamber is common to all of the bores or passages 6. Leading from the discharge chamber 20 is an outlet conduit 21, with which communicates either a flexible hose or a distribution pipe. In Fig. 1 there has been shown an upstanding pipe 22, communicating with the outlet 21 to the upper end of which are attached a plurality of elbows 23 affording in effect a universal connection for a flexible hose 24.
The apparatus heretofore described will h ave a Wide ranve of use in dispensing plastics and semi-fluids of various character, but will be found especially desirable for dispensing grease in a garage, enablin the grease to be discharged from the originaliv barrel or container directly into the differential housing of a motor vehicle, Without being handled.
In applying the apparatus to the cask or container the latter will be provided with a rectangular orifice in the head 0r top of the barrel, around which will be secured a metallic flange 25. This ange, 25 ermanently secured to the barrel or container b suitable screws, will also be provided with7 screw threaded holes re istering with like holes 26 inthe outurne head or ledge 27 of the upstanding fiange 3 of the apparatus.
The dispensing apparatus heretofore de-v scribed is secured in inverted position to the top or head of the cask or barrel 1 containing the material to be dispensed, by means' of studs or screws 28, extending thru the lateral flanges or ledges-127 of the housing, and thence enga ing in the marginal iiange 25 of the barre opening. The apparatus being secured to the cask or barrel, the latter is then inverted. as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the housing 2 becomes the base or support for the barrel or cask 1. The contents of the barrel will descend by gravity thru the open lower end into the receiving opening 4 of the dispensing apparatus and into direct engagement with the screw conveyors. The latter by their rotation simultaneously discharge the material laterally thru the passages 6 into the discharge chamber 20, and thence thru the outlet 21, under pressure. In Figs. 5 and G there has been shown in lieu of the original container for the lubricant or barrel 1, a rectangular reservoir 30 mounted upon the base 2. The objecting means in this instance is the same as that heretofore described.
Projecting laterally from the reservoir or container 30, at the top thereof to which it is attached by bolts 30, is a bracket 31, carrying bearing standards 32 for a transversely arranged jack shaft 33. This shaft 33 is adapted to be rotated by a detachable crank 34, and carries a bevel gear 35 meshing with a corresponding gear 36 on the upper end of the drive shaft 14', corresponding with the shaft 14 of Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 14 carries at its lower end a bevel gear pinion 13 meshing with a corresponding gear 12 upon the ejector shaft as heretofore described.
Mounted upon a shelf 36 projecting laterally adjacent to the base of the reservoir is a driving motor 37, having upon the motor shaft a worm gear 38 meshing with a worm wheel 39, loosely journalled upon the drive shaft 14. Fixedly carried by the drive shaft 14 adjacent to the worm wheel 39 is a ratchet wheel 40, the teeth of which are operatively engaged by a drive pawl 41, carried by the Worm wheel 39.
The construction is such that upon hand actuation by means of the crank to rotate the shaft 33. the drive shaft 14' is rotated carrying with it the ratchet wheel 40. The drive shaft 14 will rotate freely within the worm gear 39, while the pawl V41 operates idly from tooth to tooth as the ratchet wheel 40 is -rotated beneath the pawl. However, when the device is to be motor driven, the rotation of the Worm Wheel 39 under the inluence of the worm 38 upon the motor shaft causes the pawl 41 to engage with the ratchetV wheel 40 and thereby rotate the drive shaft 14 independent of manual operation. The rotation of the shaft 14 1n either event thr'u the medium of the intermeshinfg ears 12k and 13 effects the rotation o t e ejector screws 7, as heretofore described.
From the abovedescription it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the t particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modifica-tion in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of y its advantages.
'While in order to comply with the statute the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to structural features, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise but one of several modes of putting the invention into effect, and theinvention is therefore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and valid scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: v v
1. In an .apparatus for dispensing semi solids from a reservoir including a base member, a series of independent channels therein extending in parallel relation and all communicating with the interior of the common reservoir, each channel terminating in a bore, a pressure chamber common to all the bores, conveyor screws located in the channels,. and extending `thence into said bores, the helical direction of the pitch of successive screws being reversed, intermeshing driving gears for the several screw conveyors, for rotating the succeeding screws in reverse directions, actuating means therefor and a conduit leading from the pressure chamber of less capacity than the combined capacity of the several screw7 conveyors.
2. In an apparatus for dispensing semisolids from a reservoir including a base member, a plurality of conveyor screws therein arranged in parallel relation closely adjacent to each other and exposed in the bottom of the reservoir which is common to the plurality of conveyor screws, a pressure chamber separated from the reservoir into which all of the screws discharge, actuating means for simultaneously rotating the screws and a discharge conduit leading from the pressurechamber of less capacity than the combined capacity of the conveyor under pressure, and an outlet conduit from the chamber of reduced capacity.
4. An apparatus for dispensing semisolids from a container having an access opening, including a base upon which the container may be mounted in inverse position, said base having a channeled recess therein registering with the access opening of the inverted container, a plurahty of screw conveyors located one in each channel and exposed through said channeled recess to the contents of the inverted container, a pressure chamber formed in said base, a series of bores forming continuations of the several channels and affording communication between the chamber and the channelled recess means for rotating the conveyor screws in unison to transfer material from the channeled recess to the chamber and store it therein under pressure, and an outlet conduit leading therefrom having less capacity than the combined capacity of the conveyor screws.
5. In an apparatus for dispensing lubricant and the like, a plurality of spiral conveyors located side by side at the bottom of a supplyreservoir common to all the conveyors and cooperating one with another to eject the contents of the reservoir in comparatively large volume, a pressure chamber common to al1 of the conveyors into which the commodity is discharged under pressure, a discharge conduit leading from the pressure chamber having a discharge capacity materially less than the combined capacity of the conveyors whereby an excess of commodity is accumulated under pres sure in said pressure chamber to insure a uniform rate of discharge through the outlet conduit, .and means for actuating the conveyors in unison.
6. In an apparatus for dispensing semi solids, a container, a channeled bottom for the container, conveyor screws located side by side in the channels of said bottom, a pressure chamber into which the screws discharge the material from the container under pressure, an outlet therefrom of reduced capacity, and means for actuating the screws, including a main drive shaft, a drive gear mounted upon said drive shaft a non-reverse clutch engagement between t el drive gear and the shaft permitting independent rotation of theY shaft relatively to the ear in one direction but engaging said mem ers for unison rotation in the same direction under driving influence of the gear, and means for effecting operative vrotation of the shaft independent of said driving gear.
