UNITED STATES FRANK W. LEE, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
KNIFE CASE.
Application filed January 24, 1924. Serial No. 688,240.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK V. LEE, acitizen of the United States, and resident of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of \Visconsiu, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to knife cases, and is particularly directed to a knife case adapted to be detachably supported adjacent a vertical wall.
Objects of this invention are to provide a knife case which is of sanitary construction,
which may be most easily kept clean, which is provided with individual pockets for the knives, which is open at each end to prevent the collection of trash, and which is provided with a transparent front so that the knives are at all times visible and may be properly selected and yet are protected from dust.
Further objects are to provide a knife case which may be cheaply made, which has a very attractive appearance and which is of sturdy and substantial construction.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the knife case showing a knife in position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
The device comprises a back plate 1 which is preferably formed of sheet metal. This back plate is provided with a plurality of "integrally formed ribs 2 which are pressed outwardly to provide a plurality of separate and distinct pockets 3 for the reception of the knives. These pockets are open top and bottom to prevent the collection of trash. This back plate has rearwardly turned upper and lower flanges 4: which, as may be seen from Figures 2 and 4, form continuations both of the back plate 1 and of the ribs 2. These rearwardly turned flanges may be reinforced by folding a portion of the metal against such flanges, as indicated at 5 in Figures 2 and 4. The vertical ends of the back plate are turned forwardly to provide retaining flanges 6 for a purpose hereinafter to appear, and such retaining flanges may have inwardly directed bottom ips 7.
The front of the knife case is formed by a glass plate 8 which is slipped down behind the retaining flanges 6 and in contact with the outer face of the ribs 4, such plate resting upon the inturned tongues 7 of the end flanges.
If desired, the back plate may be provided with keyhole slots 9 by means of which the entire knife case may be readily attached to suitable supports.
It will be seen that a knife case has been provided which is adapted to receive the blades of the knives and which fully protects the knives from soiling while such knives are still visible and most readily selected.
It is to be particularly noted that the inturned horizontal flanges 4: space the device from the wall a sufficient distance to allow the ready grasping of the upstanding handles of the knives.
It will be seen, therefore, that a knife case has been provided which is of attractive andstrong construction, which may be cheaply manufactured and which may be most readily used.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. A knife case comprising a sheet metal back plate having integrally formed, for- Wardly projecting spaced vertical ribs, and having rearwardly turned spaced flanges adjacent its upper and lower edges, and a glass front plate contacting with the said front ribs and forming therewith a plurality of open ended pockets, said back plate having inwardly turned vertical end flanges for holding said glass plate in position and having integrally formed clips at its lower corner for holding the glass plate against downward motion.
2. A knife holder comprising a back plate, a plurality of outwardly extending integrally formed division members, a front glass plate spaced from said back plate, said back plate having inturned ends for holding said glass front plate.
3. A knife case comprising a back plate having a plurality of forwardly extending ribs, a front plate contacting with said ribs and carried from said backplate, said ribs being parallel and spaced aparta distance sufiicient to receive a knife blade, whereby a plurality of knife blade receiving pockets are provided and are open top anthbottonr to prevent the accumulation of trash.
4. A knife case comprising a back'plate having pockets formed by integral forwardly projecting ribs, a glass plate contactingwith the outer portion of said ribs, said back plate having inturned end flanges for holding said glass plate against said ribs and having, inturned bottom lips for en gaging. the bottonr corners of said glass 1 front plate.
5. A knife case comprising a sheet metal back plate, having integrally formed ribs and having rearwardly turned spacing flanges formed adjacent its upper and lower edges, and a glass front contacting with said ribs and forming therewith a plurality of openended pockets, said back plate having inwardly. turned end flanges for holding said glass plate in position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of lVisconsin.
