Description

UNITED -STATEs PATENT QEEICEa ANATOLE EHRET, OF TELEGRAPH CITY, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-DETACHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,726, dated November 10, 1874; application tiled August 1, 1874.
and useful Improvement in Horse-Detaching Apparatus, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will iirst be fully described,
and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan View of the whole apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the single-trees; Fig. 4, a section of Fig. 3, taken on theline arm.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the double-tree of the vehicle; B, the single-tree. C represents the front of the vehicle. D is the pole or tongue. E represents the traces. The traces have loops at their ends, by means of which they are attached to the ends of the single-trees. F are hinged bolts at the ends of the single-trees, onto which the loops on the ends of the traces are hitched. G is a spring-catch, which is thrown by the spring in front of the hinged bolt F, to hold the bolt in position for conning the trace. The spring-catch (at the ends of each single-tree) is connected with the Vsway-barsH by the chains I. The bolts J connect the single-tree withthe double-tree. K is a bellcrank, which works on the central bolt L, which bolt connects the double-tree with the tongue D. m are chains, which connect the sway-bars H with the central bell-crank K. N is the detaching-lever. This lever is attached to the front of the vehicle by the bracket O, and is connected with the bellcrank K by chain P at the point Q, and the chain is connected with the lever at R. (See Fig. 2.) When the lever is pushed outward the effect is to draw back the spring-catches, which detaches the traces from the single trees. The motion due the chains when the lever is thus pushed is indicated by the arrows. S are handles for throwing back the spring catches by hand. T is a hook at the end of the tongue, which is pivoted at the point u. V is a sliding catch-bolt, connected with the lower end ofthe detaching-lever by the rod or wire W. This arrangement is for the purpose of' detaching a third horse, which may be connected with the hook T by the chain or rod X. Y is a collar or shoulder ou the tongue. Z is a strap for attaching additional horses. a a and b b are stay-straps. By this apparatus the driver is enabled to instantly detach fractions or frightened horses from the vehicle, thereby preventing injury to passengers, as well as to the vehicle.
Having thus described inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The yoke T, hinged at or near the junction of its two prongs, combined with a detachable spring-bolt that passes between the ends of its prongs, as and for the purpose specied. f
.2. The' detaching-lever N, bell-crank K, sway-bar H, and the chains or rods by which they are connected with each other and with the spring-catches, substantially as described.
