THROTTLE-CONTROL MECHANISM.

' Be it known that I, Josnrni A. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lrowell, in the county of Foard and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Iniprovements in ilhrottle-Control Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to governors, and contemplates the provision of a governor mechanism primarily designed for use in conjunction with tractors, whereby the throttle is automatically controlled to pre vent the motor from operating beyond a predetermined speed, the mechanism being susceptible of adjustment to vary the speed at which the motor may operate without being effected incident to the operation of the governor mechanism.
The nature and advatages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection fiith the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combina tion, and arrangement of parts as claimed,
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, part being shown in section; Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional View of the same; Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 2; Figure f is a rear end elevation of the de v ice; Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2, and Figure (5 is an end elevation reverse to Figure 41:.
The mechanism forming the subject matler of the present invention includes a shaft which is provided with a longitudinal bore 11 to receive a rod 12, this rod projecting beyond both ends of the shaft and provided at one end with a head or enlargement The purpose of this rod 12 will be hereinafter described. One end of the shaft is threaded to accommodate a nut 14, and this end of the shaft is reduced to provide a shoulder 15. Surrounding the shaft and interposed between the nut 14: and shoulder 15, is a collar or support 16, which is formed with an extension 17, on which is fulcrumed as at 18 a bell crank lever as shown. One branch 19 of this bell crank lever extends across the adjacent end of the shaft 10, while the other branch 20 is connected to a shaft 21 through the instrumentality of a connect- 1922. The other end of the shaft 21, is also offset as at 25, and leading from this offset extremity is a link 26 which is connected with the throttle valve indicated generally at 28. a coiled spring 29 is connected to one end of a bolt 30 which is passed through a pon tion of the offset extremity 24: of the shaft 21, and has associated therewith a nut 32 to vary the tension of the spring, the latter being connected to a fixed point as at 33. The rotation of the shaft 21 is automatically controlled incident to the movement of the 10d 12 longitiulinally of the shaft 10, and this rod 10 is only actuated when the motor of the tractor (not shown) operates at a predetermined speed. When the rod 12 is moved in one direction to the shaft 10, it cpe ates the bell crank lever, and turns the shaft 21 against the tension of the spring above described, thereby partly closing the throttle valve. 1V hen the speed of the motor is reduced, the spring functions to reverse the movement of the shaft 21, returning the pin 12 to its normal position.
The shaft 10 supports a block or casting 35 which is recessed as at 36 to accommodate the ball bearing 37 on one end of the shaft 10 as illustrated. This block or casting 35 has also pivoted thereon, a plurality of arms 38 which operate in grooves 39, and
ach arm supports a weight 40. These weights are arranged adjacent the shaft 11), wholly beyond one end of the block or cash ing 35. Each arm includes an offset end portion 41, and those portions 1-]. terminate directly behind the head or enlargement 12 of the rod 12.
The block or casting 35 is adapted to be arranged within the belt pulley 12 of the tractor, and bolted or otherwise secured thereto by fastening elements which are adapted to be passed through openings -.l--l. provided in the attaching flange 45, so that the block 35 rotates in unison with the beltpulley. Manifestly, when the motor operates beyond a predetermined speed, the weights 4:0 are moved outwardly moving their supporting arms on their pivots, and causing the offset extremities 41 to shift the rod 12 longittulinally 0f the shaft 10, and thus impart movement to the shaft 21 to partially close the throttle valve as above described. It will be noted, that by adjusting the nut to vary the tension of the spring 29, that themechanism can be regulated so as to allow the motor to operate at any desired speed, before the governor mechanism is brought into use. A spring 47 provides a connection between the hand lever 48, and the adj acent offset extremity 25 of the shaft 21, so that the latter can be operated by means of the said hand lever.
While it is believed that from the fore going description, the nature and advan ages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to whc 1 desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
