Description

R. c. LlvEsAY mma HEAD Fon HARVESTERS Filed latch 20, 1922 .ROBERT C. LIVESF" @F MULNE, LLNOS, ASSGNGR '.O :DEERE & COMPANY, OF
MOLINE, ILlGTGS, A CORPGRATON 0F ILLNOIS.
KNIFE HEAD FUR HARVESTERS.
Application :filed March 20, 1922.
To all whom it may conce/m:
Be it known that l, ROBERT C. Llvnsar, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Md linel in the county of Rock lsland and State of lllinois, have invented certain nevv and useful improvements in Knife Heads for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. v
llfy invention relates to knife heads for harvesting machines in which a reciprocating knife is employed to cut the standing grain, and the object of my invention is the production of a simple and efficient device, economically constructed of steel and provided With a novel type of ball bearing for the pitman, and a Wear plate which can be readily removed and substituted with another or repaired.
Referring to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate identical parts- Figure 1 is a plan view of a complete knife head embodying` my improvements. Figure 2 is a rear elevation` of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 8 of Figure 1. Figure l is a transverse vertical section of a part of the ball bearing. Figure 5 represents the Wear or cushion plate, and Figure 6 is a view of the casting forming part of the ball bearing.
The part 1 of the knife head includes a shank 2 provided with perforations for rivets by which it is fastened to the knife bar 3, shown in dotted lines. At the pitman end. of the part 1 an extension 4 is bent vertically at substantially a right angle, and formed thereon is a substantially hemispherical cup 5 having a central outwardly beveled aperture 6; this cup 5 forms one half of the bearing to which the pitman is to be connected. A substantially hemispherical part Z of a member 8, similar in diameter to the cup 5, forms the second part of the bearing and is secured to the first half by a substantially hemispherical part 9, of the member 8, which fits snugly Within the cup 5 and is provided with a tubular stud projecting into the aperture 6. By suitable pressure the stud 10 is expanded, Within the opening 6, into rigid contact With the bevcled surface of the opening 6.
its stated the member 8 is formed of tvvo substantially hemispherical parts 7 and 9; these parts are preferably integral, the part Serial No. 545,110.
having the same outside diameter as the cup 5, and the part 9 having the saine diameter as the inside of the cup 5. The difference in the diameters cf the two parts resul in an annular surface or shoulder 1l unich is drawn tightlv against the edge of the cup by the expansion of the tubular stud l0, so that a compact spherical bearing is presented to which the pitman is to be attached.
Si Wear plate 12 is riveted to the pitman end of the part 1 and to the knife bar 3 of the knife head and can be readily detached therefrom when continuous operation results in such Wear to require repair or the substitution of another.
1. A knife head formed of sheet metal and including a vertical web having a substantially hemispherical cup shaped projection on one side thereof, and a member secured Within said cup and having a projecting substantially hemispherical part c0-operating with said cup shaped projection to form a substantially spherical bearing.
2. A knife head formed of sheet metal and including a vertical Web having a substantially hemispherical cup shaped pro jection on one side thereof, a member having a substantially hemispherical part secured Within said cup, and having a substantially hemispherical part projecting from the cup beyond the opposite side of said web and cooperating With said cup to form a substantially spherical bearing.
3. A. knife head formed of sheet metal and including a vertical web having a substantially hemispherical cup shaped pro jection on one side thereof having a central aperture, a member having a substantially hemispherical part adapted to be positioned Within the cup and having means expansive in said aperture to hold said member rigidly With the cup, and a substantially hcmispherical part of said member projecting beyond the Web and co-operating with said cup to form a substantially spherical bearing.
4. A knife head formed of sheet metal and including a vertical Web having a substantially hemispherical cup shaped projection on one side thereof with a central opening, a member having a substantially hemispherical part adapted to be positioned Within the cup, a stud on said part extending into said aperture and expansible therein to hold Suid member rigidly with the cup, and a substantiallg7 hemispherieal part of said member projecting beyond the Web and e0- operating with said cup to form a substzur tially Spherical bearing.
5. A knife head formed of sheet metal and including a vertical web having a substantially hemispheriezil cup shaped projection on one side thereof, an outwardly beveled aperture in Said cup, a member having a substantially hemispherieal part adapted to be positioned Within the cup, a stud on Suid part extending into said aperture und expansible therein to Contact with the beveled Surface oi said aperture to hold Suid member and cup rigidly together, und e substantially hemispherical part oi said member projecting beyond the web and eo-operating with said Cup to form a substantially spherical bearing.
6. A knife head formed of sheet metal end including a Vertical Web having a Substantially hemispheriezil @up shaped projection on one side thereof With a central uperture, a member Composed of two opposed substantially hemispherical parte, one of said parts having the sume diameter :is the inside of the cup and adapted to be positioned therein, the Second part having the Same diameter as the outside of the cup and eti-operating With said cup to form .1 substantially Spherical bearing, and u stud on the substantially hemiepherirul part in the cup extending into Said aperture und e);- pansible therein to hold said member and cup rigidl'iv together.
