MOUNTING FOR PHONOGRAPH MOTORS.. fr 1 Application led. May 1,
To all .whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON E. WooDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful'mprovements in Mountings for Phonograph Motors, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of the same. Y
This invention relates to phonographs and particularly to the mounting vfor the motor mechanism.
In the usual phonograph construction, the
turntable is mounted on a motor driven spindle to rotate above a cabinet shelf, on which is mounted the stopping brake and other parts. AIn order that the brake memf ber may properly align with the edge of the turntable, the latter should have' a given elevation above the cabinet shelf. With heretofore known methods of mounting the motor in the cabinet, the given elevation` of the turntable was not always maintained, as the cabinet shelves vary in thickness, by warping and the like.
It is the principal object ofthe present invention to provide a phonograph construction such that the turntable may always have a given elevation above the cabinet shelf.
It isa further object of the invention to provide a compact, convenientlyassembled motor unit that may readily be mounted in ready made cabinets to fulfill the conditions above mentioned, without the necessity of carefully positioning and adjusting the parts of each machine.
lVith these general objects in View, the invention consists in the combinations, details of construction and arrangements of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a view, partly in vertical' section, and partly in elevation, of a portion of a phonograph constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure-2 is a similar view taken on a section at right angles to that of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a. similar view, with partsremoved, taken on a different section.
Referring to the drawing there is provided a cabinet shelf, eXemplied at ll, l1av- 19.20, serial No. 378,033.

vThe,inventionincludes a motor vmechanism including a turntable spindle, and means .for
so supportingl the 'motor V'mechanism fromy the cabinet shelf that the spindle 4will have a givenfprojection above the shelfVA regardless of the thickness of the latter.' rlfhis may be accomplished, for example, by suspend- Y ing a base plate from the top ofgthecabinet Shelf and supporting the motor mechanism entirely vbyvbearings carriedfby the .base plate. l
Although capable of various construel tionsin that shown, there isv provided'a
base plate 13 having a bottom rib 14-to which is attached a'housing 15. by the base plate are bearings forr the motor 1 Carriedjv partsY and in structures embodying., the in`l vention to the best advantage, two` bearingsa-re provided, one being cast integral with the base plate, the other. being separate. As
Depending lfrom the base plate and cast:
integral therewith is a second bearing
bracket 24. Journaled in this bearing and in a
boss 25 in the base plate through which it extends, is the turntable spindle 26. For part of its length the spindle is formed with worm teeth 27 meshing with a worm gear 27. The latteris mounted on a
stud 28 driven by a pinion 29 which meshes in turn with the spring driven
gear 23. The spindle has mounted thereon a
gear 30 for driving a centrifugal governor of any suitable construction, indicated generally by 31,
The parts are so dimensioned that the
housing 15 has an easy fit inside 'the open
#v ing 12 in the cabinet shelf. The
base plate 13 extends out beyond the
rib 14 to havey a flange like
portion 33 which is substanf tially greater in diameter t-han the opening in the
shelf 11. Below the
ange 33 is a
seating gasket 34 which, for present purposes, may be considered as partof the base plate.
