Be it known that I, JOHN ROGER OLIVER, a" citizen of the United States, vresiding at liliedtielthin the county of Norfolk, State of hassaclmsctts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopping and Starting Mechanism for Shoe Stitching or Other Machines, of which the .following is aspecification. n
This invention is a novel stopping and starting mechanism for shoe stitching or other machines, and is shownapplied, as an example, to the so-called loutsole stitching machine, by `which the outsole and welt of a shoe are stitched together, although the invention is applicable to various other types of power driven stitching machines, such as the-well known but-ton hole sewing machine, and other machines wherein it is required to `bring the main or operating shaftto rest in a definite position without undue shock.
The main object of the present invention isv to afl'ordv a stopping and starting mecha nism which will be 4more efficient in the respects already mentioned and more conrement.` durable and reliable in operation.
Other and more particular object-sand advantages of the present invention will be explained in the hereinafter following description of one form or embodiment of the invention, or willbe apparent to those skilled in the art.

The general object of such a stop motion may be substantially as set forth in said patent, as follows: When the seam is finished or the time to stop has arrived the pedal or other control member operates to put the stopping mechanism into effect. `For example when t-he pedal is released and rises this may unclutch the stitching shaft from the power drive and at the same time apply friction to effect stoppage of the shaft. Such stoppage may be quick in point of time and without shock, but will leave the shaft 1n an. indeterminate position; and the mechanism `hereof operates thereafter to turn the shaft slowly to the desired final stopping position, usually with the needle retracted from the work. The slight reaction of the parts after the `friction stoppage may be utilized to set into action the supplemental mechanism, for example through a latch or trigger as described in said patent. At the conclusion of the final rotation the shaft will be finally stopped in the desired definite position.
The features particularly differentiating the present invention from said patent may beexplained generally as follows:
In the prior patent, after the `first stop* page the engagement for the supplemental slow drive was variable in time, sometimes consuming a period almost as lgreat as a complete rotation at the slow speed before the engagement thereof,-owing to the possible dbelay in theregistration of` a certain clutch member or driving dog with thecooperating member on the shaft. The present invention overcomes this possible delay and renders the action quicker and more uniform, namely b-y affording greater opportunity for the engagementV of the slow driving and driven clutch members, for eX- ample by a plurality of independent driving clutch dogs and associated elements cooperating With the same driven clutch member.
In vthe prior patent the power connections from the shaft of the machine to the slow driving clutch `were complicated; in the' present improvement. an arrangement is provided considerably simplifying the drive and rendering it more effective and compact.
In the prior patent the final stoppage was secured at .the desired point through impact members brought into relation upon throwing out the slow drive. The present improvement dispenses with all impact, and by simplified mechanism provides for final stoppage through a friction means or brake, with which itis possible to give immediate stoppage at the proper point in view of the slow speed and low moment-um of the parts.
The belt 21 for the slow drive may correspond with the belt having the saine reference number -in the prior patent, but the connections between thebelt and the drum 110 on the main stitching shaft 25 are different.
In the prior patent they included pulley,
shaft, helical gear,fdriveii gear, shaft, helical gear, driven gear, shaft and pinion. In the present constructionv the belt 21 runs' on a pulley 216, mounted on a shaft 21.7 jouriialled in a special'bra'cket 218 located directly abovethe dru-in. The pulley and belt may be located at either end of the shaft 217, either at the front orat the rear of the niachin/e, as 'indicated by Fig. 4'. It is Vonly necessary yto use a worm 219 engaging a toothed-worin wheel 220 on the drum 110, giving the properspeed reductionandthe desired slow speed ofthe drum, which may bev about 1/5th of the full speed of the stitching shaft. -f 5 1 The normal drive of the stitching shaft may be thesame as in the prior patent. The foot pedal or controller operates through the fork 43, the studs 44 of'which engage in groove 45 of the hub 46 of a clutch member Or-co'ne 47 rotated loosely on the stitching shaft at the full driving speed. The `rcooperating outer clutch cone 48 is mounted on a. disk 49, the hub of which is keyed to the stitching shaft. The rim or peripheral surface 50 of the disk 49 constitutesa braking pulley and is engaged'by-front and rear brake straps 60 having top lugs 61 coniiected by a bolt 62 and lowerlugs 65 connected by a bolt 74 and ai spring 75, all of which may be varranged as in said pateiit.-
The disk 49 also carries a vclutch member for the slow drive in the form of an annular plate 122, having a clutch recess 123 adapted 4to receive a dog of the slow driving means, aswill be described.A Inside of the drum 110 the main shaft is surrounded by a sleeve 124 surrounded by a spring 125'accominodated in a recess in the druin and operating to press the ldrum toward the left, that is, toward the right in Fig. 1, tending to engage the slow drive. The spring 125 backs up against a xed sleeve 128 supported by a bracket 127. 'These parts coi'- respond in function and reference number w with the prior patent. Alsocoiresponding with the prior patent is a follower or stud 164 arranged below the drum and adapted to rise, when released through the latch or 'trigger mechanism already referred to, and indue time to engage the cam groove in the drum, so that the drum operates to cam itself along the main shaft after the.
clutching to effect the unclutching of the slow drive. As in said patent the drum 110 herein is also shown formed with a peripheral flange 129 cooperating with guards 130 and 172 at certain parts of the stopping cycle, and three buttonsor projections 186, in place lof the single button bearing the same number in the patent. The several elements of mechanism shown in Fig. 1 thereof below and associated with the cam follower stud 164 are indicated as identical with the prior patent and therefore are not herein described. In the prior patent the drum 110 was formed with a single cam groove, which would incur varying delays in the removing of the slow drive after the preliminary frictional stoppage of the machine. I will now describe that part of the present improvement which provides for quickening materially the engagement of the slowdrive, and itssubsequent disengagement. e.
Instead of a single slow clutch dog on drum 110 as in the prior patent the present construction indicates a plurality, namely three clutch dogs 222, and these moreover are not rigid parts of the slow rotating drum 110, but are slid-able therein so that while one of them engages the single 'clutch recess 123 in the disk 49 .the other two may yield longitudinally, this-yielding moreover being made to serve a function, as will be described. Each of the three dogs is shownas having a squared front or advancing edge, but preferably a bevelled rear edge 223. Each of the dogs vis in the form of a bolt or sliding bar projecting lengthwise from the drum 110 and'extending through an appropriate recess in the drum, to where the inner or right hand Vend of the dog is formed and arranged tocooperate in the cam action. To this purpose eachof the dogs has its inner end bevelled at 224 to constitute a part` of one of the inclined walls'of a corresponding cam groove.y Also its inner end is incline, at 225, forming an 4upslanting surface upon 'which'the cam follower 164 may ride out'of4 sition 227 shown in Fig. 3, in which it eX- tends directly into the corresponding one of the cam grooves, effectually rendering that cam inoperative. f `It will be observed that the member 110, herein termed a `drum for convenience, although it might take various forms, yperforms various functions. It is driven slowly through the connections 216vto 220 already described, and thus is a partof the supplemental or slow rotating means". It carries the clutch dogs cooperating with the recessed clutch member 122and in that psense is a clutch member, sliding longitudinally on the main shaft. It is also a controlling cam .for the slow drive, cooperating with the fol.- lower or stud 164, since the engagement of the'follower with the drum camgrooves causes the drum member to cam itself longitudinally for operating the clutch. The operation is assisted by the guard members 130 and 172 already mentioned, while each.. of .the buttons 186 takes part in the operation Aof resetting .the latch'mechanisni, Vwhich is operated in accordance with the` patent, to control the follower 164 and thereby cause the slow drive to be disengaged. V
Instead of a single peripheral camion the drum 110, as in the patent, with (the possible attendant delay inengagementpthe present mechanism shows the drum formed with a plurality, namely three peripheral'cams 229, each one corresponding with one of the'dogs 222, and the three accommodated inthe periphery of the drum in an overlapping man ner as indicated by Fig. 3. Each of the cams 229 commences with an inward incline or entrance portion 230, such as to let' "the'fo1- lower 164 into the groove in a smooth and quiet manner. The iirst part of each cam groove is a dwell 281, which is partly bounded at the left by the right or interior end of the corresponding dog. Each cam groove thereafter'takes a leftward slant-232, which also is partly bounded by the dog, namely by the bevelled end 224 of the dog.. The slanting portion of the cam is followed by a second dwell 233; which terminates' anvelevating in cline- 234 adapted to throw the 'follower' down and out inv a smooth quiet manner. Associated withthe inclined portion 232 of each cam groove is shown a spring guard v162. y'This operates to prevent sudden engagement of the Vfollower with the inclined portion of the cam and possible shock. Vhen the corresponding dog is thrust inwardly to its abnormal position 227 this cooperates with the guard 162, the inclined surface 225 of the dog elevating the follower and delivering it on top of the guard 162, and so rendering the cam groove inoperative.
Before describing the operation of the parts thus far enumerated the new parts constituting the final stopping' means Will be referred to. For this purpose the gear 220 on thevdrum isutilized as a iiange, and its longitudinal movements transmitted to the iinal brake. A. cross shaft 256 is shown, somewhat below the toothed drum iiange 220, this shaft carrying a pair of arms 257 having double flanged heads 258 embracing the sides of the drum flange, as best shown in Fig. 2. lOutwardly extending pins 259 on the heads 258 extend into slots 260 formed in longitudinal bars 261projecting toward the right, in Figs. 1 and 2 toward the-left, from `a final stopping friction cone 262 engaging a complementary cone 263 secured to thefdisk 49 keyed tof-themain shaft. The pins 259 have a certain amount` of free `play in the slots 260, but when thrust fully tothe right they press against; pins 265 sliding longitudinally. inthe bars 261, each of the sliding `pins having a collar 266 pressed against by a-spring 267V 'adjustable in tension by lock nuts 268; The movement of the pins 259 toward Vthe pins .265 first 'applies spring pressure to 4thebrake cone 262, and .inally a positiveprfessure, giving suiciently forcible frictionto effect quickstoppalge of theslowly turning parts. i
The operation may be substantially as follows: The leteup ofthe pedal immediately opens the friction drive clutch 47, 48, and applies the brake bands 60 to the disk 50, `thus promptly and smoothlyvstopping the shaft. During the stopping the parts are strained, and coincident with kthe stoppage a reaction occurs which springsthe trigger described in the prior patent, thusinitiating the further operations. During stitching the drum 110 is held to the right by the `guard 130- as seen in Fig. 3, against ythe tendency of the drum spring 125 tov throw the drum to the left and engage the' slow drive.' After the first stoppagel the trigger control operates to depress the guard 130, thus releasing the drum 110, which' isV 'thereupon thrown to the left. The same movement releases the pressure of thebrake band 60, leaving the shaft free. hen'the drunr is thrown to the'left one of thethree' dogs 222 will `quickly engage in theclutch recess V123. lThis action is almost immediate, iii-'spite of the slow speed of the drum, because of the employment of three dogs. As soon as the dog engages the recess the slow drive begins. The slow rotation of the drum is transmitted through theV recessedclutch member 122 to the disk 49 and the main shaft. The two dogs `that are not in driving engagement are thrust 'relatively to the right, to the dotted position 227 `in Fig. 3, thus entering`the corresponding cam grooves and rendering them inoperative as already described. The cam groove corresponding to the 'driving dog remains operative. The leftward movement of the drum whichy engages the slow drive also operates through connections shown in the prior patent to release or normal position.

The length of the cam incline-232 is clearly such as to throw the drum lconsiderably beyond the normal position indicatedl in Fig,y 3. The slow drive becomes nnclutched when the follower has reached a'point `about midwayalong the cam groove 232, and thereafter the rotation of the main shaftis only by momentum, while thedrum continues to be turned at slow speed by power. Finally the `follower 164 is pulled down away from the cam and latched there, lthe Supplemental guard 172 being pulled down at the same times permitting the ,flange 129 to contactthe guard130, thus restoring the parts to the position shown `in Fig. 3, with everything in readiness for re newed stitching -by wsimply depressing the pedal and engaging the main drive'clutch 47, 48.

3. In a high speed .power driven machine, thecombination, with a shaft thereof, of stop' means yoperative `after disconnection of power toy bring the shaft to rest yWithout shock inarr indeterminate position, slow power means coming i-nto action after such indeterminate vstoppage for restarting and rotating the shaft slowly to a predetermined final position, comprising a drum slidableon the shaft, power means forturning the drum, a clutchbetween thedrum and shaft, means operativeat a definite .point in the shafts rotation for shifting the drum-.and thereby openingv said clutch, and means operated bythe shiftingof the drum for ap- -plyingv friction to cause final stoppage of the shaft.

The combination as in claim 3 and wherein .the last mentioned means comprises la-,trictiofn cone on'the shaft, a complementary cone slidable longitudinally, bar veziten'ding longitudinally and connectedtol operate said slidable cone, said bar having a sloti,-and a yielding contact therein, and a pusher moved by the drum and said slot. i

In ahigh speed power driven machine, the combination, with a shaft thereof, of stop means operative after disconnection of power to bring the shaft to rest wit-hout shock in an indeterminateposition, and slow power means coming linto action after such indeterminate stoppage for restarting and rotating the shaft slowly to a predetermined final position, comprising` a clutch member on the shaft with single shoulder, and a plurality of clutch dogs engageable therewith.
The con'ibination as in claim and wherein the several dogs are yieldingly mounted so that one may engage while the others yield to inoperative positions.
7. In a high speed power driven machine, the combination, with a shaft thereof, of stop means operative after disconnection of power to bring the shaft to rest without shock in an indeterminate position, and Slow power means coming into act'ion after such indeterminate stoppage for restarting and rotating the shaft slowly to a predetermined final position, comprising aA drum loosely surrounding the shaft and slidable thereon, connections rotating said drum at low speed, a plurality -of clutch dogs on said drum, and a clutch member on the shaft engageable by any one of the clutch dogs.
8. The combination as in claim 7 and wherein the several clutch dogs are slidable in said drum, whereby all but the one making clutching engagement may yield to inoperative positions.
9. The combination as in claim 7 an wherein the drum is formed with a plurality f of cams engageable with the same follower, and when so engaged adapted to cam the drum in a direction to disengage the clutch. l0. The combination as in claim 7 and wherein the drum is formed with a plurality of cams engageable with the same follower., and when so engaged adapted to cam the drum in a direction to disengage the clutch, and each dog arranged to slide on said drum when another of said dogs enters clutching engagement, and thereby render inoperative the corresponding cam.
1l. The combination as in claim 7 and wherein the drum is formed with a plurality of cams engageable with the same follower, and when so engaged adapted to cam the drum 4in a direction to disengage the clutch and apply a final stop to the shaft.
