My invention relates totalking machines, and particularly to those of the disc record type andhas-for its object to produce a,device whereby an operator onsuch a talking machine will be able to tell at a glance the amount of springpower the motor contains at any time, and how many records may be run off before it will be. necessary .to rewind the motor. r
A further object is to produce a device which will indicate when the motoris com pletely wound.
A further object isto provide means-for locking the motor against rotation when there is not sufficient power in the motor to play a full record.
These andfurther objects will more fully appear in the followingspecification and accompanying drawing, considered together or separately.

within the cabinet and across the upper part thereof is ahorizontal partition 2 to the under side of which a motor is secured. The motor comprises the usual spring drums 3 and 1 to one of which a spur gear 5 is attached. The gear is engaged by a pinion 6 on a winding shaft 7 which projects through the side of the casing and isengaged by a crank in any well known manner. The spring drum 4 is provided with a gear 8 which, through agear train in which is located the usual governor, drives a spindle 9 which projects through the partition 2 and carries a turn-table 10which in turn supports a record disc 11.
" The winding shaft 7 is provided with ratchet wheel 12 which is engaged by a pawl 13 to prevent backward movement of the shaft. A. portion 14 of the shaft has a left handed screw thread and carries a nut 15 which is the hub of a spur wheel 16. The
hub is extended on both sides of the gear 16' and carries a yoke 17 which extends upward and projects through a slot 18 in the motor frame. i V
Carried in the motor frame and located above the threaded portiono'f the winding shaft 7 is a shaft 19 which is provided with pinion 20. This pinion has a face of a length approximately equal to that of :the threaded portion of the shaft 7 andis engage-d by the teeth of the gear 16. The
shaft 19 carries at one extremity *thereof a' gear pinion .21 meshing with a gear 22 carried by the drum 4.
The upper end of the yoke 17 above the frame has pivoted thereto a lever 22 to which is pivoted an arm 23 which extends across the motor frame and is pivoted on the spindle 9. The free end of the arm projects upward through a slot 24: in the partition and is provided with an indicator finger 25 which co-operates with a scale 26 on the partition. The scale is calibrated to read four large records and six small records. The lever 22 extends beyond the pivot of the arm 23 and is provided with a slot "27 through which projects the free end of a bar 28. The bar 28 is pivoted to a lever 29 which is carried on a shaft 30 which passes through the partition. The upper end of the shaft 30 carries a brake shoe for engagement with the turn-table to hold the latter against the action of the motor. A spring 31 anchored to the lever 29 bears against the bar 28 to normally hold it inengagement with one end of the slot 27. When it isdesired to operate the machine a' record disc is placed upon the"turn-table,- the tone; arm is swung out, and the sound-boxes swung down with its needle resting in the record groove. The brake is now released and the motonwill" rotate the turn-table in theclock-wise direction. As the springs unwind the gear 222 will rotate the pinion 20 thro'ughthe pinion 21. The gear 16 will rotate through its engagement with thepinioni20, anda's the shaft 14; is held against rotation by the pawl and ratchet, the nut 15 and yoke 17 will be fedto the left in- 5'by the screwthreads 14 on the shaft.
As'the nut and yoke move to the left in Fig.6, the parts will be travelling in the opposite direction as viewed, in Fig, 3. The yoke will move to the right in Fig. 3', and 'carrywith it the short leg-of the arm 23, and 'the bar 28, The finger 25. will move to the left, and by its position will indicate the number of records which; may be run off before-it will be necessary to rewind the motor.- The bar 28 will be caused to f low the movement ofthelever 22 by meansof; the spring-31. v f
hen the finger 25 reaches the position shown in'Fig'i 4, it will indicate thatthereis not enough power in'the motor to run the full record on a large disc, but has just enough to finish the record. The lever' 22 has been moved to nearly its extreme position to the right, and the free-end, of the bar 28 will rest against the stop 32,'as shown dotted lines Eig, 41' Themotor will continue to run the record out, and the further movement of the lever 22 will not affect the bar 28' owing to the slot 27. When the record is'finished, there will stillbe a smalliamountof surplus powerleft in'the motor, and to prevent the needle from scratching the one. substituted.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is'as; follows:

In; a talking machine, the combination with a spring motor, a brake, a winding shaft, for the motor, screw threads on the shaft, a nut engagingthe threads, a gear on the nut, and a long faced pinion 1n mesh 7 there-with, means for rotating the long faced pinion by the unwinding of the spring whereby the gear will'be caused to travel longitudinally of the shaft, a yoke actuated by the travel of the gear, of a lever pivoted to theyoke, an arm pivoted to the lever, a pointer on the arm, a scale co-operating with the pointer, a bar carried by the brake, a stop for engaglng the bar, and means carried by the lever for disengaging the bar fromthe stop.'
7. talking machine according to claim 1, and means for indicating the number of records that can be played'before said controlling means is rendered inoperative.
8. The combination in a phonograph with a rotating record carrier, of a plurality of calibrations for different size records and a single indicator coacting therewith for indicating purposes, said calibrations and said indicator having relative movement in synchronism with the movement of the record carrier. 9. The, combination in a phonograph with a rotating record carrier, of a pluralityrof calibrations for different size records, and means coacting therewith for indicating purposes, said calibrations and said means having relative movement in synchronism with the movement of the record carrier.
10. A talking machine having visual means for indicating the number of records which may be played without rewinding, such means comprising an elongated sector plate, there being a slot substantially in the center thereof, reference characters on both sides of said slot, and a pointer to cooperate with the said reference characters, said pointer being mounted to travel in said slot. 11. In a record meter, the combination of a'springmotor, a dial and a pointer, means for moving one of the last two recited elements relatively to the other in one direction when the spring is unwinding, and for moving-said element in the reverse direction when the spring is being wound up, saidmeans comprising an exteriorly threaded element held against bodily movement and rotated when the spring is being wound up.

stantially in the center thereof, a scale on each side of "said slot, substantially the length of said sector, an arm movable in said slot in a path parallel to the scales, a double indicating pointer carried by the arm cooperating with the said scale and adapted to traverse the scale in one direction when themotor is unwinding, and means to cause the same to travel along the slot in a reverse direction when the motor is being -f13z In a talking machine, a rotating record carrier and means for indicating the num-' ber-of records which have been played, such means comprising indications in terms of records and an indicator, one of said last two elements being movable with the carrier relatively to the other.
14. In a talking machine, a record carrier,
a spring motor, therefor, means for indicatingat all times the number of records which canbe played by the spring with one winding, and at any time, the number of records tliatcan still be played without rewinding, said meanscomprising indications in terms of records, and'an indicator, one of the two being movable with the carrier relatively to the other.
15; A talking machine having an oscillating arm for indicating the spring power of themotor, ascrew' threaded shaft, a gear mounted on said shaft, said arm being operatively connected to the gear mounted on thescrew threaded shaft, a long faced pin} ion in mesh with said gear and adapted to be rotated by the unwinding of the spring, the arrangement being suchthat the gear will be caused to travel longitudinally of the shaft in opposite direct-ions asthe spring is being unwound or rewound.
16. In a talking machine, the combination with a spring motor, a brake, a turn-table spindle, a turn-table, means for winding the shaft for the motor, screw threadson the.

Ina talking machine-,the combination with a spring motor, means. for winding; the spring, and a brake lever for arrestingthe unwinding of the spring, an. elongated sector plate, there being a slot substantially in the center thereof, a scale on: each side of said slot, substantially the length of said sector, an arm actuated by the unwinding of the spring movable in said slot in a path parallel to the scales, a double indicating pointer carried byv the arm and adapted to traverse the scale in one direction when the motor is unwinding, and means to cause the; samev to travel along the slot in a reverse. direction when the motor isbeing woundg 19..
