UNITED STATES FRANZ J. SCHERER, OF GREGORY, SOUTH DAKOTA.
ADJUSTABLE KNOCKDOWN BOOKSTAND AND SHELVING.
Application filed July 28, 1922. Serial No. 578,144.
To all wlzom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ J. Sounnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gregory, in the county of Gregory and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Knockdown Bookstands and Shelving, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an adj ustable hnocledown bookstand and shelving.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient adjustable knockdown bookstand and shelving of strong, durable and inexpensive construc tion, capable of being readily set up, taken down or extended and adapted, when taken down, to be packed in a comparatively small.
space.
. A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable knock-down bookstand and shelving of this character which will not require nails, screws or any analogous metal fastening device for securing the parts together, and which when set up will form a lir n and rigid structure.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyii'ig drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views F igure 1 is a front elevation of an adjustable luiock-down bookstand and shelving constructed in accordance with this invenlion.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Figure is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of the same.
Figure a is a vertical sectional view of the central portion of the adjustable knock down bookstand and shelving.
Figure 5 is' an elevation of one of the cor nei posts, illustrating the arrangement of the inner and outer sets of sockets.
Figure ti is a sectional view illustrating the 111211111131 of adj ustably mounting the shelf supporting and post connecting bars on the corner posts.
Figure 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the arrangement of the brace.
Figure 8 is a detail view of one of the metal lining bars for the central b ace.
Figure 9 is a detail view illustrating the manner of mounting the top shelf on the corner posts, the parts being slightly separated to show the construction more clearly.
Figure 10 is a detail view illustrating the construction for adjustably connecting the sections of the corner posts.
Figure 11 is a detail horizontal sectional view illustrating the manner of mounting the longitudinal bracing board or member.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the adjustable knock-down bookstand and shelving comprises in its construction corner posts 1 and 2 arranged in pairs, the corner posts 1 being located at the front and back of the ends of the shelves 3 of the central section, While the corner posts 2 are located at the frontand back of the outer ends of the shelves 4 of the side sections, shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Any number of sections, however, may be employed but for convenience of illustration a central section and a pair of side sections forming extensions of the central section are shown in Figure 1. Each of the corner posts is provided with an inner and outer set of horizontal sockets 5 and 6, which are adapted to receive reduced terminals 7 of horizontal connecting bars 8 which constitute shelf supports. The reduced terminals are round to conform to the configuration of the round or cylindrical sockets 5 and 6, but the sockets and the reduced terminals or tenons may be of any other desired configuration, as will be readily understood. The sets of sockets 5 and 6 are located adj acent the inner and outer side. faces of the posts in order that depending portions 9 of transverse molding strips or cleats 10 may fit over and lie at the outer faces of the connecting and supporting, bars 8 when the shelves constitute portions of either the central or side sections of: the" bookstand' or shelvin Each: of the jmolding strips or cleats 10 is. provided at: the inner side with a' recess ll'to' receive the end edge of ashelf and the said 'molding. strip projects above and below the shelf, the lower depending or downwardly projecting portion being arranged at the outer side of the supporting and connecting bar 8 so as to interlock the shelves with the connecting and supporting bars 8 against longitudinal movement. The shelves, with the exception of the top shelf 12, are provided at their corners with recesses 13 to lit the corner posts and as the shelves abut against the corner posts at the inner side faces thereof and the depending portions of the transverse molding strips or cleats engage the supporting bars at the outer side faces thereof, it will be clear that a firm and rigid structure will be formed when the parts are assembled. The central corner posts 1 are beveled or tapered at their upper ends at 14 and the top shelf 12 of the central section is provided in its lower face with tapered recesses 15, which receive the tapered upper ends of the corner posts whereby the top shelf 12 ofthe central section is wedged on the corner posts and will be promptly held in engagement with the same, especially when the central shelf 12 is subjected to the weight of goods or other articles. Also when it is not desired to use the central top shelf for this purpose it will form a cap for the" central portion of the bookstand and shelving. The corner posts, for convenience of compact sto'rin-g, are preferably formed of upper and lower sections, one of thesections being provided with projecting pins or tenons 16 and the com inion section having vertical sockets 17 to detachably receive the pins or tenons 16. This will enable the sections of the posts to be readily separated and assembled and while the posts of the shelving are illustrated in the accompanying drawings as composed of two sections any number of sections may, of course, be employed.
In order to firmly brace the bookstaiid and she ving the second shelf is provided in the upwardly extending portions of its molding strips or cleats with inner recesses 18' for the reception of a central longitudinal bracing member or board 19 which is fitted between the top and second shelf. The lower corners of the bracing member 19 fit in the said recesses 18, which are preferably provided with an approximately U-sh'aped metal lining member 20 conforming to the configuration of the recess- 18 and also to the inner and upper faces or edges of the transverse molding strips or cleats. The transverse molding strips or cleats are shown in the drawings as rounded at their inner and upper faces but they may be of any other desired configuration, as will be readily anderstoed. The longitudinal bracing members may arrangedjat difierent points throughout the bookstander shelving and. it will be clear that they will be retaifiednr'place by the top Shelf 61- thexshelfiimmediatelyabove-the bracing member. The top shelf of the cen tral section has its end portions extended beyond the corner posts, while the other shelves are in flush relation with the corner posts.
It will be seen that the adjustable knockdown bookstand and shelving is adapted to be readily set up and taken down without the use of screws, nails or other analogous fastening means and. that when set up it provides a firm and rigid structure and it is adapted for use in libraries, stores and various other places where shelving for holding goods, books or the like is employed.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. An adjustable article of furniture comprising vertical posts provided with vertical sets of inner and outer horizontal sockets to enable the posts to be used in either a central or side unit, said posts having projecting upper ends, supporting bars having terminal portions adapted to be fitted in the said perforations and to o'fllsc't the said sup porting bars from either side face of the corner posts, a top shelf provided in its lower face with sockets receiving the up per projecting ends of the said posts and holding the posts against outward displaccment, shelving arranged upon the supporting bars and provided with transverse cleats depending at the outer side faces of the supporting bars and engaging the same, said cleats being provided with upwardly projecting portions and the upwardly projecting portions immediately below the top shelf being provided in their inner faces with vertical recesses and a longitudinal bracing member arranged edgewise and having its ends fitted in the said vertical recesses and forming a support for the top shelf.
2. An adjustable article of furniture comprising vertical posts provided with verti cal seats of inner and outer horizontal sockets to enable the posts to be used in either a central or side unit, said posts having projecting upper ends, sta ered supporting bars having terminal portions fitted in the said perforations and offset from one another and arranged at the inner and outer edges of the corner posts, a top shelf provided in its lower face with sockets receiving the upper ends of the said posts and holding the same against outward displacement, central and side shelving arranged upon the supporting bars in staggered relation and provided with transverse cleats de pending at the outer side faces of the sup porting bars and engaging the same, said cleats being provided with upwardly projest-ing portions.
Iii testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
