COMPRESSOR GLAND.
Application filed November 18, 1922. Serial No. 601,800.
Springfield. in the county of Hampton and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conipressor Glands, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to compressors of the type used in refrigerating systems of the private dwelling type, and more specifically, relates to compressor glands which prevent the leakage of the sealing oil and gas along the drive shaft through the gland when the machine 1s at rest and admission of air along the shaft through the gland when the machine is in operation.
The invention consists essentially of a multistage pump, having two or more pairs of meshing helical gears, each pair of gears from low to high having lessvolumetrie capacity which creates within the compression chambers a series of increasing pressures. These pressures are utilized to pump the sealing oil into the gland at a pressure exceeding the pressure-within the pump next to the gland at all times, and the atmosphere, thus preventing the sealing medium from leaking through the gland, and has for its objects the production of a gland or stuffing box that will not allow this sealing oil to escape nor air to be sucked into the'compressor.
The foregoing and other features of my invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specifications, in which I have represented my compressor gland embodying the improvements in the preferred form, after which I shall point out in the claims those features which I believe to be new and of my own invention.
The preferred embodiment of my invention I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through the compressor on the line of the drive shaft showing the helical gears in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section along the line A A Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section of the gland at right angles to that shown on right hand end of Figure 1.
Figure 41 is an end view of the gland and compressor looking at the right end of Figure 1.
1n carrying out of my invention I employ a multiple stage compressor such as used in refrigeration systems which may consist of a housing 1, a face plate 2 through which pass two parallel shafts 3 and i and on which are mounted a series of pairs of 1neshing helical gears 5 and 6. These pairs of meshing gears are provided with the usual abutment plates 7 and separators 8 through which the cross over passage 9 passes. These gears are sealed by oil, all of which is com mon to compressors of this type and are well known in the art.
The face plate 2 is provided with a projection 11 in which is housed the gland which consists of: an alining ring, adapted to snug against a shoulder 13 on the shaft 3; a mass of packing 14 surrounding the shaft, a second alining ring 15, held tight against the packing by the spring 16, which is held in compression by the bushing 17 and adjusted by screwing the gland b ock 18 home. In assembling this gland the adjusting gland block is screwed up tight so that the spring is wholly compressed and as the packing adjusts itself within the gland the spring brings a'pressure against the alining ring making the packing snugly fit the shaft 3 and housing 11.
On that part of the shaft 3 just to the left of the shoulder 13 I provide an oiling lantern 20 which is connected to the end of shaft 4 by a passage 21 and to the high side of the pump by the pipe 22. This pipe ma be partially opened or closed by the need e valve It will be readily understood with this construction the shaft 3 extends from the atmosphere through a re- '20 I provide a on the opposite which makes the oil seep towards the and sub atmospheric regions. a
If ethyl chloride is used as tho refrigeratmosphere ant the compressor will work at 17 of the pressure of the atmosphere and the vacuum of the low side.
What I claim, as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: In a multiple stage compressor of the type described, a plurality of pairs of meshing gears, each pair of gears from lo to produces a high pressure seal which lantern adjacent the inner high having less volumetric capacity than the preceding pair, mounted on two parallel shafts, one of which is the drive shaft to which the gears are radially fixed, a gland, said drive shaft provided with an oiling end of said gland and fed with oil at high pressure, a shoulder on the drive shaft at the inner end of said gland, a ring on the shaft Within the stuffing box of the gland and resting against the shoulder on the drive shaft so as to overlap said shoulder, a mass of packing surrounding the shaft, a spring actuated aligning ring pressing against the packing and forcing said first mentioned ring into overlapping relation against said shoulder of the drive shaft, an adjustable gland block, and means maintaining a high pressure acting to press the shoulder of the drive shaft against said first mentioned ring.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature.
HAZOR JUDSON SMITH.
