IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,128, dated October $0, 1874; application filed June 27, 1874.
To all whom ct may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. BROWN, JoHN G. HAYZLETT, and BENJ. F. SEATON, of Marion, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gran g-Plows and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gang-plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which fully illustrates our invention.
M M represent the axles of our plow, having their bearings in standards F and S, connected at their upper ends by a cross-beam, E. ()r, in other words, the beam E is, at each end, provided with two parallel downward-projecting standards, F S, through each set of which an axle, M, passes. The outer end of one axle,M, is formed in crank-shape, and upon the extreme end is placed the driving-wheel K. On the beam E is secured the tongue J, and also the short beam E, running parallel with the tongue and supporting the drivers seat N. The front end of the seat-supporting beam is supported by a curved brace, a, connecting the beam E and tongue J, as shown in the drawing. G represents a lever, attached to the crank-axle immediately on the outer side of the standard F, so that the crank of the axle will be between said lever and the wheel. This lever extends upward and is held between pins I I attached to a segment, b, on that end of the beam E. By means of this lever that end of the carriage may be raised or lowered as required to level the plows. A A represent the plows, attached to plow-beams B B, which are connected near their rear ends by a cross-bar, B. These plow-beams are attached to a bail or frame, I hinged or pivoted in the standards S S above the inner ends of the axles. From this frame depend two arms or bars, 0 O, for each plow-beam, which arms are pivoted on the frame and clamped togetherone on each side of the plow-beamby bolts cl d. Between the clamps thus formed is an arm, f, connected to the rear end of alever, D, which passes forward under the beam E, and is pivoted in a forked screw or bolt, h, attached thereto. The front end of the lever D is, by a rod, Q, connected with a lever, H, pivoted to the side of the tongue J.
In this machine the carriage can be raised or lowered by the lever G without interfering with the horizontal position of the plow-beams, or without affecting the depth of the plows in the ground. This latter is regulated by the draw-clevis L.
The plows are thrown out of the ground by the lever H acting on the lever D. The forward ends of the plow-beams are raised first, thus bringing the points of the plows out of the ground before the heel, and when the points of the plows are clear of the ground the heel is thrown up. At the same time the forward ends of the beams are forced down, thus accomplishing all the necessary movements by taking hold of and operating a single lever, H.
We are well aware that the novelty of our plow, as well as its chief excellence, consists only in the combination and arrangement of the various devices by which it is operated.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of lever H, tongue J curved brace a, and beams E E, all arranged as described.
2. The combination, in a sulky-plow, of the lever H D, arm f, rod Q, slotted screw h, bail P, clamps c a, standards F S, and plow-beams B B, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
