Be it known that l, CHARLEs HAMMER, a citizen of the- United States, and' a resident of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Bandliu'g Closures, of which the following is a specification.
l This invention-relates to closures for glass containers, the object thereof being to provide an improved combined removable seal- .ing band and a rotatable and reusable closure.
@ne of the objects of the inventionis the provision of a shallow flanged cap having a plurality of projections adapted to engage the projections or threads of aglass eontainer and a removable sealing bandl cooperating with the cap in s\uch way as to materially extend below the flange thereof and engage directly with 'a shoulder of the container whereby the cap is securely retained on the `container and the'package effectively sealed, yet when the sealing band is'renioved the cap is reusable .on the rotation thereof to seal the container during the further use of the contents thereof,
Another object of the invention is .the pro-` vision of an improved glass containerhavingn special form of multiple threads or projections and ajspacedshoulder therebelow whereby a combined shallow flanged cap and sealing band maygb'e effectively used therewith so that the container maybe readif ly' sealed and the vcap reused upon the ree movalof the'band, and in which the cap and band can be sealed under considerable downward pressure without-the cap projections engaging the .container shoulder.

This improved closure comprises a 4metal cap 2 and a sealing band Bparticularly applicable tov a glass container such as a -l. Thereupon the band 3 1s applied, so that its bent top edge l2 will engage the top 2 at the outer portion as indicated in Fig. 2. This will bring the lower portion 13 oftheband below the rib l0, and.
while pressure is still applied on the upper flange- 12 of' the band in a downward direction, the lowery portionl 13 is bent inwardly against the lower wall of the'rib 10, as.
shown in Fig. 3. 'This will cause avery stron and tight seal of the closure on the container. The band may have lapping endsy in the 'form of a tongue 15, that may have another tongue 16 projecting through a slot 1 the sealing band is of such depth or height] in the other tongue, that will hold the band together at the ends but permit easy removal by bending back the two tongues.
When it is desired to have access to the container, the band is loosened and removed and this will leave the lug closure free for removal. The lug cap can now be returned to the container if onlyl partially used, and can be reused a number of ytimes by simply screwing the lugs down lfirmly under the thread portions 8.
From the foregoing itwill be seengthat the skirt or flange of the cap is-of just sufiicient [height or depth to' overlap thethreads of the glass container so that the cap can he made with `a shallow flange or skirt while that it will overlap the shallow flange or skirt and will also extend beyond the samev and overlap the shoulder or rib on theglass y container and that furthermore the shallow flange is of just such depth as willJ enable its lugs to pass under the glass threads of the containerand effectively pass therebetweenand the shoulder or (rib on the container,
which latter projects sufficiently beyond the glass threads to enable the overlapping sealing band to engage the same on its outer wall and to be bent under the same in an effective )manner to hold the cap in place. Furthermore by reason of the space between the ends of the glass threa s the. cap can be efficiently pressed down wit out turning "it when the sealing band is applied andthis effective sealing is also obtained even though the cap may be somewhat turned' by reason of the sharp inclination at the ends of the threads on the container and seal such container by overlapping both the capand the jar below the shallow flange of the cap so that the band can be effectively turned under and engage the glass shoulder of the ar itself and I believe that I am the first to provide a combined. shallow flanged cap and sealing band of .substantially twice the height of the cap; in other words a combined rotatable can and sealing band which is effective to overlap the entire skirt of the cap and extend such distance therebeyond as to overlap also a portion of' the glass container and be secured by being bent so as to directly engage under the shoulder of such container. The construction also vpermits the use of a shallow flange cap which materially'results in -a saving of metal and also enables the use of a glass container having a neck of less height.
I also believe that I am the first to pro-l vide a sealed package in which the structure is such that vertical movement in one direction during the operation of sealing the band under the shoulder and without the necessity of rotating the cap `is permitted'. Aside from the other advantages hereinbefore .set
forth it will be seen that this improved packf age enables the user to readily determine whether the sealed package has been tampered with or not.
Moreover it will be observed that the sealing band andcap so cooperate that the sealing band forms the first or primary lockin f* I,provement is particularly well adapted for shallow ,flanged caps, it of course could bel 'used with skirts or flanges of greater depth vif found desirable, andftherefore it is to be understood thatfby ldescribing in detail here` in any]y particular form, structure or arrangement, it\is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of theseveral claims or the requirements of the prior art Vrlhat I claim is; I

5. rlhe combination with a container provided with a threaded neck and a spaced shoulder therebelow, of a combined rotatable and reusable metal cap and scalinor band, said cap comprising atop having a epending shallow flange or skirt having a free edge terminating adjacent to the under side ofsaid threads and provided with inwardly extending locking projections at its free edge, said sealing band having substantially twice the depth ot the skirt and extending below the same and terminating adjacent to the under side of the shoulder and having its top portion bont over the top of the cap and its bottom portion bent inward ldirectly to engage the shoulder thereunder, said sealing band Iand cap so cooperating that the sealing band forms the first locking means for the cap without the rotation thereof while the projections of the cap form the second locking-means on the removal of the band.

Asealed package comprising a container having a single row ot projections or threads with the ends spaced apart, a rotatable and reusable metal cap comprising a top having a depending liange or skirt pro'- vided with inwardly extending locking projections, each of a length adapted to pass between the spaced ends of a pair' of threads said container having a shoulder spaced below said threads, and a sealing band, the structure of the threads and pro-- jections being such as to permit vertical movement of the cap projections in one direction during the o eration of sealing' the band under'the shou der.

l1. The combination with a container, of a cap therefor, means for attaching the cap 'to the container, and a second attaching means inoperative during the positioning and attachment of the cap by said first mentioned attaching means.

The combination with a' container, of `acap therefor, means to attach the cap to the container, said clap being so constructed that it maybe brought by a straight downward movement into position to be attached by said means, and a second, attaching means inoperative during the positioning and attachment of the cap by said first 'attaching means.

A container adapted to be sealed by a rotatable and reusable cap and sealing band and having a shoulder and a single row of non-overlapping threads or projections located wholly substantially midway between the shoulder and the top of the container with their ends spaced -apart suiiciently to threads may be in close non-overlapping proximity, said thread, functioning" to per-` mit the rotatable cap to be initially positioned adjacent to said sharp end to prevent its jumping oif durin the application of the sealing band, an then sealed under downward pressure by the sealing band without engagement of the locking projections of the cap with the threads or shoulder of the container, and then to be subse-V quently sealed on the removal of the sealing band by the rotation of the cap t'o have its projections engage 'under they long, inclined edge of the container thread, whereby said sealing band forms the rst locking means and the ca i projections the secondv locking means on tlie removal of the band.

A container adapted to be sealed by a rotatable and reusable cap and sealing band and having a shoulder, and a single row of non-overlapping threads or projections located wholly substantially midway between the shoulder and the top of the container with their ends spaced apart suiiciently to enable the passage therebetween of cap projections, said shoulderprojecting beyond the threads, each of said threads having a relatively, long, straight, inclined lower edge terminating at its upper end in airelat-ively short, sharp, inclined lower edge thereby materially increasing the space between said sharp end and the shoulder, as compared with the space between the maj or part of the thread and the shoulder, for the reception of a cap'projection, whereby the ends of the threads may be .in close, non-overlapping proximity, said thread functioning to permit the rotatable cap to be initially positioned adjacent to said sharp end to prevent its jumping oli during the application of the sealing band, and then sealed under 'downward pressure by the sealing band without engagement'of the locking projections of the cap with the threads or shoulder of the container, and then to be subsequently ,sealed on the removal of the sealing band ary 1922.
