Be it known that l, /VILLIAM A. F. MAC- ditifiii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Golf Accessory, of which the following is a specification.

This invention, generally stated, relates to amusement apparatus and has more specific relation to a deviceto aid in the perfection of golf strokes or swings.

The leading object of the present invention resides in the provision of a simple, efficient, and con'iparatively inexpensive device of the character stated which may be used indoors or outof-doors to aid a golfer in perfecting his or her golf swings or strokes.

A further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a device of the character stated in which the target after being hit is automatically reset.

it further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a target symbolic of a golf ball made up of a plurality of relatively pliable strips of material secured together and pivotally mounted upon a base symbolic of a teeing ground. Other and fur her objects reside in the provision of general details of construction and arrangement of parts for attaining the results sought by the foregoing objects.

The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which: f

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, althoughit is to be understood that the various instrumentalities o n I I a a this base is elongated in form and is painted green to symbolize a teeing ground. lei-ward portion of the base which is designated 1 is elevated and is provided with an elongated opening 2 arranged centrally of the forward portion of the base. This elongated opening 2 is provided upon opposite sides with legs 8 and in advance of the legs 3 is a stop lwhich stop is located at the bottom of the base, the purpose of which will presently appear. Extending from the elevated front portion of the base rear-- wardiy is the inclined portion 5, it being understood that the base line of the base is flat in order that the same may bepos'itioned upon the floor or ground. Apertures 6 are provided the base so that the same may be secured or nailed to position in order to steady the base. The under side of the inclined portion 5 is slotted at 7 for a purpose to presently appear. The base may be cupped out upon its bottom as at 8 in order to lighten construction. The legs 3 are laterally apertured for the reception of a pin 9 upon which is loosely mounted a member symbolic of a golf ball. This mem her is of laminated structure, and consists of a plurality of vertically disposed strips 10 of relatively pliable material. In practice good results have been obtained by employing strips of raw hide and securing the strips together under compression by means of belt glue. The strips of material so secured together have preferably fitted therearound link 15 the free ends of which are soldered to a washer 16. Connecting that end of link 15 which projects through the rear portion of the pivotal member and a coil spring 17 is a link 18, the coil spring being secured as at 19 to the underside of the base and being accommodated within slot 7. As the pivotal member moves in the oirect-ion of the arrow in Fig. 3 about the rod 19 the grooved portion 13 thereof accommodates the link 18 and during the same movement the spring 17 is confined within slot 7. The pivotal member is limited in its forward movement by the previously described stop l. The inclined portion 5 has delineated thereon pair of golf clubs 20 with the heads 21 in opposed relation at the rear of the base and with the shafts of the clubs ex tending forwardly in diverging relation. The clubs serve the purpose of assisting a player to guide his or her clubs for impact with the pivotal member. To use the above described device the player assumes a position in front of the device and takes his or her golf club, either driver, iron, or putter,

and makes natural swings or strokes with the result that impact of the club against the movable member causes it to move forward against stop f thereby permitting player to finish or follow through in a natural and well understood manner in golf. The spring 17 causes the movable member to automatically reset itself. By a device of the kind above described a golfer may either indoors or out-of-doors practice in a natural manner golf strokes or swings and as soon as the pivotal member automatically resets itself the annoyance of re-teeing balls is overcome although the player has all the other advan tages derived by swinging at a ball. The spring 1.7 exerts sufficient tension upon the pivotal member so that a player strikes the movable member just as hard as he would a golf ball so that the device in addition to being a convenient form of amusement device/also provides more or less exercise in making strokes.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A. device of the character stated comprising a base having an elevated open-top, forward portion and a rear portion, a member symbolic of a golf ball pivotally mounted in the opening at the base front said member being formed of strips of relatively yielding material glued together and a spring connecting the bottom of said memher and the base rear for normally maintaining said'member in a vertical position with the major portion thereof projected above said elevated base part.

2. 3. A device of the character stated comprising a base having an elevated open-top, forward portic and a closed, inclined rear portion, member symbolic of a golf ball )ivotally mounted in the opening at the base front said member being formed of strips of relatively yielding material glued together and a spring connecting the bottom of sail member and the base rear for norn'ialiy maintaining said member in a vertical. position with, the major portion thereof projected above said elevated base part.

[a device of the character stated comprising a base having an elevated, open-top, forward portion and a closed, inclined rear portion, the said opening being elongated and longitudinally disposed and the underside of the inclined portion being slotted longitudinally, a member symbolic of a golf ball comprised of vertically disposed strips secured together laterally considered, a pivot pin passing through said member and journalled in the forward walls of the base opening and a spring connecting the bottom of said member with said base and accommodated in the base slot.

A device of the character stated com prising a base having an elevated, open-top, forward portion and a closed, inclined rear portion, the said opening being elongated linally disposed and the underside of the inclined portion being slotted longitudinally, a member symbolic of a golf ball comprised of vertically disposed strips secured together laterally considered, a pivot pin passing through said member and journalled in the forward walls of the base opening and a spring connecting the bottom of said member with said base and accommodated in the base slot for maintaining said member in a normal vertical position, and means at the base front for limiting forwart movement of said member about its pivot point.

6. A device of the character stated comprising a. base having an elevated open-top, forward portion and a closed, inclined rear portion. a member symbolic of a golf ball pivotally mounted in the opening at the base front said member comprising a plurality of vertical strips of relatively yielding material glued together and a spring connecting the bottom of said member and the base rear for normally maintaining said member in a vertical position with t e major portion 10 part for said member substantially opposite its striking face, a link connected to said metal part and projected through said members and spring connecting said link and the base rear for normally maintaining said member in a vertical position With the major portion thereof projected above said elevated base part.
