Be it known that I, WILLAM G. Hous- Knnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electron-Discharge Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to electron dlscharge devices and pertains more especially to an improved support for the cathode thereof.
The object of this invention is to mamtain uniform the space relation between the cathode and other electrodes of an electron discharge device despite the expansion of the cathode during the operation of the device.
This object is attained by maintaining the cathode strands under uniform tension through the medium of resilient filament supports. In general, there is provlded an insulating mem er servlng as a support for a resilient supporting member whlch comprises a single length of Wire wound to provide a resilient portion, a tubular portlon and ide member. The tubular portlon 1s attac ed to the insulating member and a filament supporting member is attached to the resilient portion and passes through the guide member.
Referring now to the drawmgs, Flg. 1 is an elevation partly brokenaway of ayacuum tube embodying the invention. Flg. 2 1s i an enlarged detail view of the Suspension member.
An enclosing vessel 10 is rovided With a reentrant stem 11, on whic is arranged a collar 12`having arms 13 extending therefrom into the mterior of the vessel.. The arms 13 support a flattened cylindrieal electrode 14, to which are welded the rods '15. Carried b the ends of the rods 15 are blocks 16 and 1 of insulating material, between which is sup orted the grid electrode 18. Hooks 19 rigily mounted in the block 17 extend toward the block 16. Supported by the block 16 are resilient supportmg members, by means of which the filament 1s maintained under tension.
The supporting member compri'ses a single length of Wire, the midportlon of which is wound to form a closed helix or tubular wall 20 which is adapted to be received within an aperture in the block 16. From one end of the helix, there extends toWa-rds the block 17 one end 21 of the Wire, the tip of which is coiled to form a guide loop 22. The other end of the Wire is wound into a helix 23, the turns of which are spaced apart sufficiently to form a resilient portion capable of being compressed. Intermediate the portions 20 and 23 is a single turn of Wire 24 of larger diameter than the helix 20 and which rests on the surface of the member 16 to maintain the Suspension device 1n`proper position relative thereto. A filament supporting hook 24 has its shank passing through the guide loop 22, the tubular portion 20 and the spring 23 to the outer end of which it is welded as at 25. The filament 26 is strung back and forth between the hooks 19 and hooks 24'* and is maintained taut through the tension exerted thereon through the medium of the resilient helices 23.
What is claimed is:
1. In an electron discharge device, an insulating member having an aperture, a tubular member arranged therein, a spring member integral with said tubular member and projeeting from one end thereof, a guide mem er integral with said tubular member and fiprojeeting from the other end thereof, a ament supporting. member passing through said gulde member and attached to said resilient member, and a filament supported by said filament supporting member.
2. In an electron discharge device, an insulating member having an aperture, a Wire helix arran ed in said aperture, a resilient Wire helix integral with said first helix, a guide member integral with said first helix, and a Suspension member attached to said eoA resilient helix and passing through said guide member.
3. In an electron discharge device, a supporting member comp-rising a single length of Wire wound to l'form a small diameter tight coil helix and a large diameter open coil helix, one end of said Wire being parallel to the axis of said helices, a loop at the end of said Wire, and Suspension member passing through said loop and attaehed to said larger diameter helix.
4. In an electron discharge device, an insulating member having an aperture, a supporting member comprising a single helix of wire wound to form a. small diameter tight 11 ,f
coil helix and a large diameter open coil helix, said tight coil helix being received withnLsaid aperture. a turn of Wire between said helices adapted to contact with said insulating member, and a guide member inte l With said-tight helix and extending su tially parallel to the axis thereof.
5. In an electron discharge device, an insulating member having an aperture, a sup- V porting member comprising a single length of Wire wound to form a small diameter tight coil helix and a large diameter open coll helix, said tight helix being received Within said aperture, a turn of Wire between said helices adapted to contact with said insulating member, a guide member integral with said tight coil helix and extending substantially parallel to the axis thereof, and a Suspension member passing through said guide member and helices and being attached to said larger diameter helix.
6. In an electron discharge device, an in'- sulating member, a supporting member comprising a single length of Wire wound to form a-resilient portion, a portion adapted to be supported by said insulating member, and a gu' e portion.
7. In a ii electron discharge device, an insulating member, a supporting member comprising a single length of Wire Wound to form a resilient portion, a portion adapted to be supported by said insulating member, and a. guide portion, and a Suspension member passing through said guide portion and attached to said resilient portion.
