To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUIs JENsEN, a
' citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. a
My invention relates to an autographic register, particularly the type for which I applied for Letters Patent of the United States of even date herewith Serial No. 533,- 338 in which one of the discharge rollers has a tubular portion, afloating collar thereon, means for intermittently centering the same and a solid reciprocal shaft within the tubular roller for operating the intermittent centering means.
The object of my invention is to provide simple-meansfor actuating and retaining the reciprocal shaft at the ends of its reciprocal throw. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to t e-drawings A represents a side-frame of an autographic register, B represents the lower tubular discharge shaft and C the extended end ofa solid shaft that is seated and is reciprocablein said tubular shaft B. Z
This tubular discharge shaft B provides the lower feed roller that-coacts with the upper roller. D to feed the paper strips and near its central portion the inner shaft is connected .by a transverse screw e to an exterior cone d. This screw is movable in a longitudinal slot f in tubular shaft or roller B and the cone that is mounted, on said roller is adapted to engage and center a loose and exteriorly. milled starter annulus 0, whenever it. is desired to start the register to discharge the paper record strips from the same. This annulus lies next a collar 0' fixed on tubular shaft or roller B and it has a central opening that is greater fii diam eter than that of the roller upon which it is mounted, and when it is engaged by the cone, the latter engages the funnel shaped sides of said opening and centers the annulus against the collar and also moves it into contact with the feed roller- D. Upon each side of the cone and an nulus just described the tubular' shaft or roller is provided with correspondin spaced flanges g, g, that are serrated, an are located so as to come in registry with the postholes in the paper strips that are passed through the register. Thecone is kept bearing towards the annulus by means of a coiled spring h wound around the tubular shaft or roller B between the base of the cone and the adjacent flange The end of the solid shaft C extends beyond the end of the tubular shaft B to a point outside of the side-frame A, and the tubular shaft has a pinion 5 splined to the same. This pinion 5 is engaged and driven by a pinion 6 mounted on the drive-shaft E, which is tubular and is loosely mounted on a stud, 7, the inner end of which is secured to side-frame A. Its outer end has a worm gear 8 thereon, that is engaged by a worm 9 securely mounted on the armature shaft 10 of the motor 12 which latter is suitably secured to said side-frame A.
The object of my invention is to stop the motor 12 every time the postholes in the ends of the forms or strips of the paper record comes between the friction disks of the discharge rollers, which latter are described and shown in my application above mentioned and in the pending application of myself and Walter R. Barker, for autographic registers, filedevendate herewith,

The pinion-6 also engages a larger gear 13 that. is securely mounted upon a stationary spindle 14. At its outer end, this spindle has a washer 15 of greater diameter secured thercto by a screw 16 tapped into the same.

wards therefrom which, once during each revolution'of said gear, .comes intocontact with an arm 18 of a rocking-block 19, and moves the latter so as to cause a contact, 20, mounted upon an arm 21, of said block, to be moved out of contact with a fiat tongue 22 securely mounted upon the stud 23, which latter is mounted upon a plate of suitable insulating material 24, secured to the sideframe. Block 19 has an upwardly projecting arm 25, that has a pin 26 projecting therefrom, and when the block is moved, this pin, 26, engages the edge of an arm 27 projecting downwards from an overhead trip 28. The arm 27 and trip 28, projectlng rearwardly from the same boss gives the structure a bell-crank shape that projects rearwardly from its pivot 29 which latter is a transverse rock-shaft the ends of which project laterally from the sideframes of the register and to the other end of which a depressible handle 50 is secured.
The trip 28 has a recess 30 in its underedge near its free end, and when the mecha-v nism is in proper position this trip will be down and the inner bend or dip of said res cess has a segmental thread that will engage the threaded end (not shown) of the shaft C and as said shaft revolves will cause it to return to the inner limit of its movement, and when it reaches this position the trip will move downwards in front of the end of the shaft and hold it at the inner limit of its movement. The trip is kept pressing downwards by a link 31 and a coiled or helical spring 32, hooked onto the lower end of said link, at its upper end "and onto the screw 16 at its lower end. The link 31 may be dispensed with, however.
The block 19 is kept normally pressing upwards by a helical contraction spring 33 that connects the upper end of arm 25 there'- of with alug 34 projecting from the root of the cammed arm 27.
The contact 20 is connected by an insulat-- ed wire 35 to one pole (not shown) of the motor, and the contact tongue 22 is kept connected to the other pole 36 of the motor. In the position of the parts of the invention shown in Figure 3, of the drawings, the motor is cut out, but just as soon as the tongue 22 is engaged by contact 20, (caused by moving arm 27 on its pivot) the circuit is closed through wire 41, and the motor operates and drives the feed rollers of the machine.
The length of time the motor is in operation is determined by the length of time it takes for the gear 13 to make one complete revolution.
The time taken to discharge one strip, or sets of strips of the paper from the register, is not determined by the length of time it takes to revolve gear 13. If the strips be shorter than the length of the path described by pin 17 which lifts arm 18 and separates the contacts 20 and 22, the discharge is stopped when the postholes in the end of the strlps come into registry with the feed rollers. The gear and motor continue to operto engage and center said starter, of an oscil latory device that engages the screw-threaded'end of said shaft and returns it to its original position, and means that include an electric motor for actuating said mechanism.
2.. In an autographic register, the combination with the feed rollers, of a reciprocable shaft within the bore of one of said rollers, that has a screw-threaded end extending beyond a wall of the register, an annular starter mounted upon and normally eccentric to one of said shaft, a cone-shaped head secured to said reciprocal shaft and operable to engage and center said starter, of a spring depressible oscillatory arm having a segmentally threaded recess in its edge that engages the screw-threaded end of said shaft and returns it to its original position, and actuating means including an electric motor, an electric circuit including said motor and having a switch therein, and means that move said arm in front of the adjacent end of said shaft when the latter has withdrawn from saidrecess. g
3.- In an autographic register, the combination with the feed rollers, of a reciprocable shaft within the bore of one of said rollers, that has a screw-threaded end extending beyond a wall of the register, and
an annular starter, of a spring depressible oscillatory arm having a segmentally threaded recess that engages the threaded end of said shaft and returns it to its original position, a motor an electric circuit closed to said motor, a switch in said circuit, a driveshaft driven by said motor that actuates said shaft, and means driven by said driveshaft that opens said switch.
4. In an autographic register, the combination with the feed rollers, of a reciprocable shaft within the bore of one of said rollers, that has a screw-threaded end extending beyond a wall of the register, an annular starter, of a spring depressible oscillatory arm having a segmental threaded receSS.-;that engages the threaded end of said shaft and returns it to its original position,

motor, an electric circuit closed to said motor, a switch having an oscillatory member in said circuit, adrive-shaft driven by said motor that actuates said shaft, and a gear driven by said drive-shaft that has a pin projecting therefrom that engages the oscillatory member of the switch and opens the same.
6. In an autographic register including paper strip starting mechanism, a control therefor, a strip feed mechanism that moves the strip subsequent to the action of the starting mechanism, a drive gear, a motor connected therewith for supplying power thereto, a circuit including said motor, a pivoted element carrying a terminal of said circuit. a fixed element connected with an opposite terminal of said circuit, a detent upon said drive gear for oscillating said pivoted element and opening said circuit, and means actuated by said control for closing said circuit.
7. In an autographic register including paper strip starting mechanism, means including an arm for throwing the starting mechanism into operation, a strip feed mechanism that moves the stripsubsequent to the action of the starting mechanism, a drive gear, a motor connected therewith for supplying power thereto, a circuit including said motor, a pivoted element carrying a terminal of said circuit, a fixed element connected with an opposite terminal of said circuit, a detent upon said drive gear for oscillating said pivoted element and opening said circuit, and means actuated by sald arm for closing said circuit.
8. In an autographic register including paper strip feeding mechanism, a control therefor, a drive gear, a motor connected therewith for supplying power thereto, a circuit including said'motor, a pivoted element carrying aterminal of said circuit, a fixed element connected with an opposite terminal of said circuit, a detent upon said drive gear for oscillating said pivoted element and opening said circuit, and means actuated by said control for closing said circuit. i
9. In an autographic register, the combination with a shaft having associated therewith an annular feed member and a reciprocatory shaft, of a motor driven train of gears, acircuit maker and breaker, a gear having means for actuating a member of the circuit maker and breaker, and -a member of the. circuit maker and breaker actuated by the reciprocatory shaft.
10. In an autographic register, a feed roller, a reciprocatory shaft carried by the feed roller and rotative therewith, a motor driven train of gears, one of the gears having aswitch throw member, a switch, one
end thereof being positioned to be engaged by said switch throw member, a second member of the switch that engages the reciprocatory shaft and is actuated in one direction thereby. v
11. In an autographic register, the combination with a shaft having thereon feed rollers, a reciprocal shaft carried by the first mentioned shaft and provided with a screwthreaded extended end, a movable member which engages the screw threaded end of the reciprocatory shaft to effect longitudinal movement thereof, and means for effecting a return of said shaft.
12(The combination in an autographic register, of strip feeding means comprising a tubular roller, a reciprocal solid shaft associated with said tubular roller, a trip member actuated by the reciprocal shaft, a motor from which said roller derives motion and means constituting a circuit maker and breaker which is actuated when said re ciprocal shaft is moved longitudinally and controls the circuit maker and breaker whereby a circuit is formed to said motor.
13. In an autographic register, a paper feed and stop mechanism comprising rotatable feed rollers, one of said rollers being tubular, a longitudinally movable shaft maintained by said tubular roller and provided with a threaded end portion which projects beyond the tubular roller, a conical clutch member carried by the shaft for engagement with a companion clutch member which is looselymounted on the tubular shaft, a rotor for the feed shaft, and a circuit maker and breaker for said rotor.
14. In an autographic register, the combination of feed rollers, a shaft mounted for reciprocation within one of the feed rollers, said shaft having an end portion which extends beyond the end of the feed roller in which it is partially'housed, a strip engaging and feeding means loosely mounted to be engaged by and positioned to be concentric with the axis of its supporting roller by a cone shaped head associated with the reciprocatory supporting shaft.
