STOKER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stokers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in stokers, and more particularly to improvements in the stoker shown in the patents to Williams Nos. 1,118,985 and 1,099,- 956 and in my copending application Serial No. 335,100. In my copending application I have improved the Williams stoker by the elimination of gearing and connecting sh'afting to drive the conveyor elements of the stoker. Drive to these elements is attained through a worm wheel and worm gear mounted upon a shaft extending to an engine. wheel runs at comparatively high s eed.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a drive the driving engine to be of the low speed type and to be so mounted as to drive the driving gear of the conveyor through the medium of a single idler gear, thereby eliminating shafting and extra gearing.
A further object resides in the provision of a drive of such character that a compact arrangement of engine and conveyor is secured. mounted upon the same supporting structure.

It is here sufficient to state that the vertical conveyor screw 7 receives its drive through bevel gears 8 from a horizontal worm wheel teeth thereon as in my prior construction.
E represents the driving engine. This may be of any desired type, but, for economy and reliability in operation andefliciencyin upkeep, I prefer to utilize a slow speed reciprocating steam engine having a plurality of cylinders and with their pistons driving a crank shaft by means of the connecting rods 16. These rods co-operate with suitable crank pins on crank discs 17, and intermediate the discs and driven in unison therewith upon their rotation'is a spur gear 18. This gear on the engine crank shaft will hereinafter be referred to as an engine gear. i
The engine E is provided with a crank case 19-20 split longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 2, and the entire engine assembly or unit is fastened to a sub-base is attached in any suitable manner to the base 15.
Preferably attached to thelower half of the crank case is a pair of, arms 22 (see Figs. 1 and 4). These arms, form a bracket to suitably support a pin23 which carries a spur gear 24 hereafter'called .an inter crank case and housing 13 are suitably part of the screw. This gear, as,

What I claim is n 1. In a conveyor for stokers, in combination, a conveyor screw, a assaged structure said passaged structure, a spur gear mounted in a section of said passaged structure and connected to said conveyor screw for driving the same, a driving engine having a driving gear tram mounted thereon and forming therewith a' unitary driving element, said gear train 1nincombinaa horizontal conveyor screw, a lifting conveyor screw driven from said horizontal screw, passaged structures for said conveyor screws, supports for said passaged structures, a spur gear connected to the horizontal conveyor screw intermediate its ends, forming a section of the horizontal passaged structure and forming also a bearing sup ort for the conveyor screw, a driving engine having a driving gear train mounted thereon' and forming therewitha unitary driving element, said gear train including a gear on the engine crank shaft and a spur gear meshing in driving relation with said screw spur gear, a casing for said engine and gear train, and a support for said unitary driving element carried by the support for one of said passaged structures, said unitary driving element being removable from said support and replaceable thereon as a unit fro and to driving relation respectively wit said screw spur gear.
