Be it known that I, JOHN J. KLnscHnA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a fountain pen. My object is the provision in a pen of this character of revoluble means for imparting a longitudinal movement to a piston in the penbarrel to cause the filling of the pen or to eject the fluid therefrom should occasion require.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a pen in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the rear end portion of the pen with parts broken away and parts in section.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the rear portion of the pen barrel showing the plunger moved inwardly thereof.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional view but showing the plunger moved in an outward direction through the barrel.
Figure 5 is an end elevation of the traveler sleeve, the toggle lever system being removed therefrom.
The fountain pen 1 may be, and preferably is, of the usual construction. The barrel, however, being constructed in sections, and more strictly speaking there is a fixed cap 2 on the outer end of the barrel. Between the cap 2 and the barrel 3 there is arranged lug andthe cap the Vclosed end 11 of a tube 12. yThe tube 12 is arranged centrally in the barrel 10 and has its opened end embedded in an annular groove in the shouldered portion 13 of the said barrel.
Arranged in the tube 12 there is a plunger 14. On its inner face the plunger is provided with a bifurcated lug 15, and in the bifurcation of said lug the second end of the toggle lever system 8 is pivoted.
With my improvement it will be noted that the turning of the nut 4 will impart a longitudinal movement to the screw 5. 1 The spaced elements 6 in the bore of the screw pass through elongated slots 16 in thetube 12 and the screw is permitted a movement equalling the length of the said slot. This movement is suicient to compress the toggle lever system, as described in Figure 3 of the drawings, causing the plunger to suck ink into the tube 12. By reference to the said Figure 3 it will be noted that the.
plunger, in its innermost position, is disposed a considerable distance away from the slot 16 so that ink cannot pass through the said slots. By turning the nut 4 in an opposite direction the toggle lever system will be expanded bringing the plunger 14 to the position shownin Figure 4. When in such position surplus ink will be ejected from the pen-and the plunger will be positioned to suck ink into the tube 12 upon the turning of the nut 4 in the reverse direction.
Having described the invention I claim:
1. A fountain pen having a plunger therein, expansible means connected with the plunger and revoluble meansv for ex-` panding or contracting said expansible means.
