CONDUCTOR-S VALVE DEVICE.
Application led October 15, 1923. Serial No. 668,576.
T0 @ZZ 'ui/0712, if 71mg/ concern.'
Be it known that I, @L1-DE C. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Conductors Valve Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices employed on a train in backing up for sounding` a warning signal and for effecting an application of the brakes when desired.
The principal object of my invention is to provide an improved device of the above character having an operating handle' by which a warning signal may be sounded or the brakes applied at will without removin g the hand from the operating handle.
In the accompanying drawing; Fig. 1 is a section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, showing a construction embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 an elevational view, showing the combined signal and brake applying device.
hooked over the platform rail of a car.
As shown in the drawing, the device may comprise a casing 1 having a valve chamber 2 connected to the usual back-up hose 3 which in turn is connected to the usual automatic train brake pipe. In valve chamber 2 there is mounted a poppet valve l having a stem 5, the outer end of which engages a lever 6, pivotally mounted on the 'casing 1.
Rotatably mounted on a horizontally projecting portion 7 of' casing l is a cam or eccentric 8 which is provided with an oper-v ating handle 9, and the peripheral face of the cam 8 is adapted to engage the upper face of the lever 6, when the handle 9 is operated. Mounted in a valve chamber 10 yof the portion 7 is a poppet valve 11 having a projecting stem l2, the outer end of which is engageable by one end of a lever 13. Said lever 13 is pivotally mounted in the hollow of the handle 9 and is provided at its outer end with a push button 14, which projects through an opening in the handle 9, so that said button may be 0perated with the hand that grasps the handle.
Then valve 11 is lifted from its seat, communication is established for ,supplying fluid under pressure fromvalve chamber 2 through . passages 15 and 16 to a suitable' by operating the push button 14- with the hand which grasps the handle 9, so 'that the valve 11 is unseated to supply fluid to` the whistle 17. If it is desired to apply the brakes, the handle 9 is rotated toward the left from the position shown in Fig. 2, andL thereby the cam 8 is rotated, so that the lever 6 is depressed and the stem 5 is then operated by Ysaid lever to unseat the valve 4. Fluid is thereupon vented from chamber 2 and the automatic brake pipe to exhaust port 20. The ybrake pipe pressure is thusA reduced to effect an application of the brakes in the usual manner.
The brakes may be gradually applied to effect a service application or a more rapid discharge of air may be effected to causel an emergency application of the brakes, according to the extent the handle 9 is rotated.
lVhen the handle 9 is returned to its normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the valve 4 closes and the brakes are released by the operation of the usual feed valve on the locomotive to restore the pressure in the brake pipe.
It will be evident that the signal may be operated as desired and the brakes applied without removing thehand from the handle9.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zl. A back-up hose attachment comprising a valve for venting fluid to effect an application of the brakes, a valve for operating a signal, a handle for operating one valve, and a lever associated with the handle for operating the other valve.
2. The combination with a back-up hose adapted to be connected to the brake pipe, of a valve device connected to said hose and having a valve for venting fluid fromy the back-up hose to effect an application of the brakes, a signal device, a valve for va-' lever associa-ted with the handle for operating said signal controlling valve.
The .combination with a `back-up hose adapted to be Connected to the brake pipe`v 5 of a valve device connected to said hose and having a Valve for venting' fluid from Jshe beek-11p hose to effect im application of the brakes, a stem for said valve, :L pivoted level: engaging said stem, a cam ada-pied t0 engage Sadlever, and :L handle for operatingY *10 said cam to depress said lever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GLYDE C. FARMER.
