- H. D. CLINTON JACK SPOOL File'd June 19, 1925 Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
PATENT OF wE ARRY n. o Intron, or Jonnson CITY, NEW YORK.
JACK sPooL.
Application filed June 19, 1925. Serial No. 38,351.-,
To all whom it 17mg concern: a
Be it known that I, HARRY D. CLINTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson City, in the county of Broome'and State of New York; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jack Spools; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such 'aswill enable others skilled in the art towhieh1it appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to jack spools such as are used especially by :the =woolen and Tworsted manufacturers and; in the. knitting trade, in the manufacture of yarn, and also to ship yarn from one branchto another orfrom one mill to another; such spools being made of different lengths-varying from 24 to 7 2 inches between the heads, andthe heads varying'in diameter from 6to l2 inches. The spoolsare provided with gud'geon pins which project from opposite ends-thereof. VOrdinarily the gudgeon is secured tothe 1' endof a 'wooden barrel by'simply' boring vaholein the end of'tlie barrel and"a trans- 'verse-hole or slot'to receive a "nut which is screwed on a threaded part of the gudg'eon which is inserted in thefirst mentioned :hole. Such acconstruction is defective inasmuch as Ythe gudgeon, is constantly-becoming loose mm is a diflicult matter to screwythea'nut on securely "on the inside of the'barrel and when the gudgeon becomesloose it causes a'great deal-of trouble, asthe head is apt off over the end of the spool,usual1y causingconsiderable loss, and it'is desirable. that the headshould be detachable, becau'sefre- -'quent1'y the-heador barrel breaks, :in which icase a new head can be used with the old barrel on a new barrel with an oldhead,
but even-though the head is detachableit should also be possible to apply'theheadfso that it cannot wo'rkloose or come oftothe'rwise than by actual intent. 5
The objects" of my invention are. to overcome the dilficulties hereinbefore' mentioned -incident to the use ofjack spools as heretoloose or detached in actualuse but may .'be 1 easily separated when it is desired to" remove the head in case of breakageior' for' other cause. 1
Fig. 2 is an end viewof the same, x
broken away end portion of the "The invention= will first be hereinafter more particularly desc'ribed,with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as a part'of this specification,
and then pointed out in the claims'at the end ofthe description 1 In-sa d drawings, Fig. 1 is aplan View of a jack spool constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig; 3 is a vertical 'sectionallviewr of a I spool shown in Figs. '1 and 2; and;
.- =-'F1g. 4 isa perspectiveview of'ithe several parts shown In Flgs. 1 to 3 mposition for assembling 'and securing said parts together.
Referring to said drawings in'which the same reference letters are used to denote corresponding parts in different views,-'-the letter A denotes a 'wooden barreljwhich may be of tubularform or provided with a socket in each end 'thereof,"xto receive a 'bushing'B, preferably of wood, inserted in jbdlt Cficarrying the f gudg'eonfpin and an oblong recess b extending transversely of said opening to receive an: oblong-- head '0 on the inner end of said bolt, to prevent the bolt "from turning. The bolt has a threaded 'portion' intermediate its ends on which is to'come off andI permit the yarn toslOughscrewed a nut D, whereby the/head of the square, is then screwed on the threaded porerably of'hard fibre, having a square for polygonal opening'therein, is placed ontthe bolt with said second nut fitting snugly within the opening through the head, so
that/said second nut and the head will roof the spool barrel Thereupon a jam nut or metal washel G having a peripheral por 'tion of the bolt C and a spool head*F,'pref as to firmly press the head againstthe end 5 tion 9 bearing upon the outer side of the head and a central boss 1 or protuberance g bearing upon said second-nut, is screwed on the threaded part of the bolt for securing the several parts together, said head. and washer being provided with oppositely disposed itwoijam nuts. Theassembled parts are thus firmly secured together and held in place so as to prevent the head or the gudgeon from turning or becoming loose or the head from coming oft, zuntil sufiicient force is :applied'itounscrew thewasher by the application of a spanner wrench for -that purpose, land vthe 'fibre head will be firmly held between the end of the spool barrel and the nut :E with nd-tendency to become loose until the washer is unscrewed, whereupon -.the=head may. be easily taken-ofi of the-barrel by means .of a. spanner wrench applied thereto.
Preferably a steel ferrule orsleeve H is 1 secured on a reduced endportion of the barrel so as toabut against the fibre' head and PIEVGIItvWBZLIfiD the ends of the barreland also. strengthen the entire construction.
Suchv ferrule however may be dispensed with, especiallyiif the barrel-is anade 0f :har'der J material :than wood.
Havingthusdescribedsmy invention, what .I claim as new anddesire to secure by LetterslPatentof the United. States'is:
