PORTABLE POWER UNIT.

Be it known that I, KARL Ro'r'reano'r, residing at Dahlem, near Berlin, Germany, Fontanestr. 14, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Power Units, for which application has been filed in the following countries: Germany, October 30, 1913; Belgium, June 29, 1920; Denmark, February 18, 1920; England, July 9, 1920; Finland, November 25, 1920; France, June 18, 1920; Holland, July 27, 1920; Italy, June21, 1920; Norway, June 22, 1920; Poland, June 80, 1920; Spain, January 9, 1920; Sweden, December 30, 1919; Switzerland, July 22, 1920;v Bohemia, June 17, 1920; Hungary, February, 19, 1914:; So. Africa, September 27, 1920; Japan, February 15, 1921; Australia, July 10, 1920; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
For portable stations for wireless telegraphy, carrier-stands of saddle or stool form have hitherto been employed, on to which the various station apparatus were fastened. Employment of such carrier-stands, which consist of a single unit, is however very disadvantageous for transport for various reasons, and as the utility of a portable station is very closely related to the method of transport employed, a transport apparatus which impedes the bearer, whether man or animal, or diminishes his capacity and mobility owing to other drawbacks, frequently impairs this utility.
Hitherto in stations carried by animals, for example, stands, with the station parts fastened thereon, have been strapped on to the pack saddle. Consequently the stands had to be so dimensioned that they would lit, for example, each horse. For this reason the width of the stand must be chosen comparatively large and the consequence of this is that when a slender anin'ial is employed the load does not lie firmly on the saddle and swings to and fro especially at rapid rates of travel. The animal is therefore impeded and endangered. Moreover since the stand engages over the saddle, the center of gravity of the load is comparatively high and unfavourably placed. The result is that removal of the load and especially putting Serial No. 495,592.

of a rigid whole, but separate carrier-frames on to which are fastened the station parts. These frames are transported individually and united to form a rigid stand only for operating the station. A special construction of the frames renders it possible to effect this union into a rigid stand and resolution into its various parts with very little handling.

In Fig. 1 is illustrated by Way of example the machine-saddle of a station to be borne by an animal. Fig. 1 shows the motor side and Fig. 1 the generator side. The driving motor is built rigidly in the frame 1. For transport the frame is suspended from and firmly strapped, in the position shown in Fig. l, in a holder 7 arranged on the sides of the saddle. The generator frame is carried in similar manner. Its frame is indicated by 2, the generator itself by 6. Theadvantages of this. device are as follows. The various frames rest always firmly on the pack saddle independently of the size and strength of the carrying animal. In portable stations to be carried by men, frames are, likewise employed as carriers of the apparatus.
