Description

M. .l. BOAGH. Gar-Couplings.
Patented Oct. 13,1874.
WITNESSES momma THE GRAPHIC CO- FHOTD'LITQL398: 4| PARK PLACE, NY.
UNITED STATES MICHAEL J.
PATENT OFFICE.
ROACH, OF MIDDLE GRANVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND R. L. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,890, dat d October 13, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.
of the usual size and construction, which is constructed with an additional detachable face-plate, A, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the flanges of the draw-head, and cushioned off by interposed soft rubber or other packing. This face-plate A is convex or beveled, so as to allow for turning curves without injury to the draw-head by the breaking off of parts of the same at the sides, if of cast iron. The coupling-pin B is guided and supported in a suitable standard or extension, at, at the top of the draw-head, and preferably grooved at its lower end for the purpose of being retained in the draw-head by the slideplate D looking thereon. Slide-plate D is applied to the inside top part of the draw-head, and guided by front and rear extending-rods b in corresponding perforations b of the front part or face-plate and rear part of the drawhead A spiral spring, d, is placed around the rear guide-rod b for pressing slide-plate D in forward direction, so that the front guiderod b projects to the outside of the draw-head. The slide-plate D is thereby forced against the grooved end of the pin B set into the pin-hole e, and supports thereby the pin in raised position for coupling. The approaching drawhead strikes against the face-plate and carries the slide back until its pin-hole is vertically below the pin-hole of the draw-head, releasing thereby the pin from the slide and dropping it to couple with the link D of the ordinary shape.
For uncoupling, the pin is raised by suita ble mechanism, in similar manner as the ordinary pin, and, in cases of necessity or convenience, the common pin can also be used in place of the grooved pin.
An inclined movable plate, E, is arranged in side grooves of the draw-head belmvthe slide plate D to protect spiral spring of sliding plate from injury by link, the link being kept in a horizontal position by the guardplate in conjunction with a suitable depression or cavity in lower rear part of draw-head, for entering into and coupling with the connecting draw-head.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The draw-head A, having inclined movable guard-plate E applied to side grooves below the sliding pin-supporting plate for protecting the latter against injuries from the link, and retaining the link by the rear part and cavity in horizontal position, as described.
2. The draw-head A, provided with cushionedoff detachable face-plate A, having convex or beveled sh aft, for the purpose described.
MICHAEL J. ROACH.
