' This invention has reiterenoeto door holding devices of the kind comprising a piece of springy sheet metal bent upon itself to form two overlapping laterally displaced portions one oi 'which, hereinafter referred to as the stationary portion, is adapted to be fixed against the side of a door frame opposite which the free edge ola door will be located when the door :isclosed, and the other of Which forms a resilient biadeor striking. pl ataagainst which the free edge of the door will bear during the closing of the door and when the door is closed.
In such door holding devices as heretofore proposed, the resilient striking" plate portion has not been made of greater length than the stationary overlapping portion of the device and each such device has been so tired to a door frame that the door when beingclosed will first act upon the end portion oi the resilient striking plate that is connected to the stationary plate, that is to say, at the part thereof that will require the greatest force to be applied toit by the door, to displace it in order'that the door may be closed.
The present invention has for its object to provide a door holding device of the kind referred to adapted to be fixed to the side of a door frame as before but so'constructed that when the door with which it is tobe used is being closed, the edge of the door will first engage the free end portion of the resilient striking plate so that the door will need to exert at first, only a small pressure against the said plate gradually to displace or deforrnit about its fixed inner end portion, the pressure between the blade or plate and door gradually increasing as the door is closed.
For this purpose in a door holding device of the kind referred to constructed according to the present invention, theresilient striking plate isprovided with a free end portion that overhangs or: extends beyond and inclined towards the plane of the st'a-' tionary' portion ofi't'h'e device. By the construction described, it will be understood that the distance between the bent end portion of the resilient striking a pla e, where it is connected tothe stationary portion of the holding device, and the point at which the pressure or: the door isbeing applied to such striking plate, gradually decreaseas the door is being closed, whilst the pressure actingto hold the door closed will gradually increase, which is an important advantage.

According to the example shown, the holding device consists of a strip of spring metal, for instance steel or bronze of uni form width, bent upon itself so as: totorni two laterally displaced side; portions or and I) connected together by an intermediate loop portion 0. As will be seen, when sucha fastening device is fixed to the door frame f in position for use, as is shown in Fig. 2, and the associated door is being closed, the latter will first act against the free end portion 6 of the, resilient striking plate I) so as gradually to force such plate towards the stationary portion a' and hold it in the compressed or strained condition, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, so long as the door remains in the closed position. The portions a and b of the device. are preferably made from a wide piece of strip metal of uniform width so that the portion 7) constituting the striking plate shall afford, as'shown, a wide bearing surface for con tactwith the door.
A door holding device of the kind described can be used with a door or the like designed to open in one direction only, as shown in Fig. 2, where the door 9 closes against the end wall 7L ofthe recess it, but it may be used with a door arranged to open in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 3, the door frame f in this case being adapted to admit of the door 9 being moved past it in each direction. In this case, the advantage resulting from providing the resilient striking'plate I) with a bentend portion as described is only obtained when the door swings in one direction.

A doorholding device comprising a strip of springy material bent upon itself and forming twoadjacent laterally displaced side portions connected together by an intermediate loop portion. one of the side; portions being fiat throughout its length and adapted to be fixed to the side of a door frame and the other portion, which is adapted to form, astriking plate, is of greater width than the said fiat portionand consists of two integral parts one of which ad jacent to the loop portion, is fiat and the other of which, extends beyond the free edge of the first mentioned portion and is bent laterally in the direction of and so as to overlap the free edge of the first mentioned side portion and also the edge of a vdoor to which such side portion is attached,
opposite the first mentioned flat side portion whilst the remaining part is externally of convex shape and extends outward to a considerable distance beyond and is bent in a direction towards and so as to overlap the free edge of the first mentioned flat side portion and form a resilient striking plate, substantially as described.
3. A door holding devicecomprising a wide strip of springy material of uniform width bent upon itself to form two adjacent laterally displaced side portions of equal width connected together by an offset loop portion, one side portion being flat and adapted to be fixedto one side of a door frameand the other side portion being free and bentto a convex shape externally and having its outer free curved end portion extending beyond, towards and overlapping the free edge of said flat portion, substantially as described.
