whicha float is employed to operate mechanlsm to close a valve 111 order to cut off the water supply. The object of thepr'esentinvention is to provide an improved flushing device which will operate silently and at the same time give a good flush.
According to my invention, the device consists of achamber divided into a valve compartment and a float'compartment connected by a by-pass opening at the bottom thereof below the valve in the valve compartment, while an outlet pipe of smaller diameter than the opening controlled by the valve leads from the valve compartment. A lever in the valve compartment is controlled by an operating handle and flexibly connect ed to the valve, a pivoted catch above said valve having a hooked end formed with a sloping face to engage a sloping end upon the end of the lever, such catch engaging the lever by gravity when the lever is raised and disengaging the lever as the float rises.
Approved forms of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a sectional elevation through the device.

Referring to the drawings, the device consists of a chamber 1 formed into compartments 2 and '3. From the compartment 2 a down-pipe 13 leads to the pan 12 to be flushed while a water inlet pipe 4 enters the top of the compartment 2 and can be always open thereto. In the compartment 2 is. a

One end of the spindle .9 passes through a wall of the chamber and is provided with a handle 11. forward end by means of a chain 17 or other flexible connection to an arm 18 fixed to a spindle 19 which is mounted in a bearing 20 in the dividing wall between the two compartments, such bearing also forming a stufiing box. The spindle 19 projects into the compartment 3 which forms a float tank. On this end of this spindle another arm 21 is fixed and has pivoted at its end a rod 22 projecting from a float 23. A by-pass 24 for water opens at the bottom of the compartment 2 into the float tank 3.
In operation, the valve 6 is raised to allow water to pass through the valve seat into the flushing pipe 13 by the operator turning the handle 11 on the spindle 9. This operation raises the lever 8 which will move in an are (indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 3) and will raise the catch 14 until the hook-ed portion reaches the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 3, when it will immediately fall by gravity and will be engaged by the sloping face upon the end of the lever 8 as such lever returns downwardly, thus retaining the valve 6 in an open position.
