JAMES L. POWELL, OF PIGTOU LANDING, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA.
SPRINGLESS AUTOMATIC SA'SH LOCK.
Application filed November 17, 1921.
T0 aZZ whom it may cor/worm:
Be it known that I, J AMES L. Pownmi, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pictou Landing, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Springless Automatic Sash Lock and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a lock particularly applicable to window sashes.
The main objects are toprovide a lock of this type which may avoid the use of springs, is capable of manufacture from a non-rusting metal, one in which the sash will be locked automatically through lowering movement and one which may be so attached to the shaft as not to be noticeable from the outside.
Additional objects and advantages will appear from a consideration of the descrip tion following taken in connection with ac companying drawings illustrating one practical embodiment and wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a window sash raised relatively to .a window sill and equipped with my improvement;
Figure 2 is a view of the same parts with the cover plate of the lock removed and with the sash in lowered position and Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the lock on line 33 of Figure 2.
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout the views.
In the drawings, a window sash is conventionally shown at A and its sill is conventionally shown at B. As usual the sash is slidable vertically relatively to said sill.
In reducing my invention to practice, I provide a suitable casing 4, substantially rectangular or otherwise in shape and having a removable closure plate or wall 5 secured removably thereto by set screws as at 6. The said casing is embedded in the lower rail of the sash A and be secured thereto by any suitable means as at 7.
Disposed transversely of the casing 41: are a plurality of bolts or pivots 7 upon which locking dogs in the form of levers 8 are pivoted. These locking dogs hang vertically Serial No. 515,832.
in view of the fact that their lower ends as at 9 are weighted. Said ends are hook shape and provided with shoulders as at 10 to cooperate with a fastening stud having a conical head 11, a stem 12 and which is mounted in the sill B. To this end, a fastening plate 13 may be screwed as at 141 in the sill and said stem 12 extends through a slot 15 in the plate 13 and has a pin 16 extending laterally thereof to overlap the under surface of the plate 13 to prevent withdrawal of the studs therefrom.
Manipulating lugs 17 are provided for the dogs 8 being screwed thereto as at 18 and extending through arcuate elongated slots 20 in the wall or plate 5. Exteriorly of said plate 5, lugs 18 have heads 21.
It will be noted that the casing 1 is secured to the sash on the inner side thereof and that therefore it is not visible from the exterior and form no means to tempt a person to operate it with a view to opening the window and enterin the house.
W hen the sash A 1s lowered, the hooks 10 slide on the inclined surface of the conical a'rn'r errata:
head 11, thus separating, and when said hook ends pass the lugs 11 the shoulders 10 through the weighting of the dogs will move inwardly underlapping the head 11 and thus automatically fastening the sash in place. This overcomes the liability of forgetting to lock the sash after it has been lowered. In order to release the dog raise the sash, the heads 21 are moved toward each other which will separate the book ends 9 and release the same from the head 11 whereupon the sash may be raised.
It is particularly to be noted that the use of springs is dispensed with and further it is to be emphasized that the parts are preferably made of glass or a metal which will not rust.
Changes may bemade within the spirit and scope as merely one practical embodiment has been illustrated and described.
I claim as my invention A look of the class described having pivoted locking dogs, each dog having an offset portion functioning dually to provide a shoulder and a weight to cause the dog to seek the vertical, a locking stud intermediate and co-operating with said dog engageable with said shoulder, a casing for said dogs, a
cover plate for said casing having arcuate slots passi uppe dog, operating members extending from the dogs and outwardly of said cover plate through said elongated slots, and said dogs 10 being arranged relatively close together for joint manipulation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES L. POWELL.
