CHARLES A. KALIA, 0F EXETER, NEBRASKA.
ROAD SCRAPER AND SNOWPLOW.
Application filed July 17, 1925. Serial No. 44,318.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, @Hannie A. KALINA, a citizen of United States, residing at Exeter, in the county of Fillmore and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road Scrapers and Snowplows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. l
rlhe presentinvention relates to road Scrapers and snow plows, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that kind which is attachable to a tractor, motor truck or other motor-propelled vehicle 'to be used for scraping a dirt road, or to be used as a snow plow. l
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for connecting the scraper blade with the vehicle, and novel means for adjustably supporting said blade from the road.
A further object is the provision of such a device having novel means whereby the scraper blade may be adjusted conveniently from the vehicle to which the device is attached.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts.y as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, with out departing` from the spirit of the invention. l
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device as attached to the front axle of a motor-propelled vehicle.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in secw tion on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and other portions being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line S--S of Fig. 2.
The scraper blade 7 is disposed obliquely in front of the tractor, motor truck, or o her motor vehicle, and is connected to the forward ends of pusher beams 8. Thus, plates 9 are secured to the back side of the blade 7 and have rearwardly extending, vertical flanges 10 through which pivot pins i1 extend, and said pins engage through forward terminals of the beams 8, to pivotally connect the blade with said beams.
In order to brace the blade. 7, posts 12 are secured on the beams 8 near the forward ends thereof, and brace rods 13 have angularly extending terminals engaging through the posts 12 and Iianges 10 of the plates or members 9. Cotter pins 1/1` or other retaining elements are engaged in the terminals of the brace rods 13 tohold them in place. The rods 13 are shown as located above the forward ends of the beams 8, and those flanges 10 of the plates 9 which are engaged by the rods 13 have apertures 15 at their upper and lower ends above and below, respectively, the horizontal plane of the beams 8 and pivots 11, in order that the blade 7 may be used in inverted positions, as hereinafter referred to. The pivots 11 may fit loosely in slots in the forward terminals of the beams 8 to permitof slight vertical movement of the blade 7 relatively to said beams, in order that the lower edge of thtl scraper blade may pass over unyielding obstructions. It will be noted that the brace rods extend forwardly and downwardly from the posts 12 to their forward terminals which engage the flanges 10, so that when the blade moves upwardly it is swung so that its upper edge moves forwardly and its rear edge moves rearwardly, thereby tilting the blade forwardly so that it will more easily pass over the obstructions. .The blade will normally gravitate to its lowermost position.
kThe rear terminals of the beams 8 are pivoted as at 16, to supporting bars 17 that are secured to and project forwardly from the front axle A of the vehicle, the beams 8 being bifurcated to receive the bars 17. The rear terminals of said bars are offset, as at 18, to engage over the axle A, and pieces 19 have complementing offset portions 2O also engaging the axle to provide clamps for attaching said bars 17 to the axle. The pieces 19 are secured to the bars 17 by means of bolts 21 in order that the device may be readily attached to and detached from the vehicle. The rear ends of the beams 8 have stops 22 to engage the bars 17 in rear o-f the pivots 16, so as to limit the downward swinging movement of the beams 8, but permitting said beams to swing upwardly. The
pivots 16 are in transverse alinement in order that the beams 8 can be swung upwardly and downwardly `about the transverse axis oit' the pivots 16, tor raising` and lowering` the blade 7.
ln order to adjustably support the beams S and blade 7 from the road, vertical standards 23 are slidable in the beams il immediately be'hind the posts 1Q, and caster torlis 2d are swivelled to the lower ends ot said standards below the beams S and have rollers 25 therein to roll on theV surface oi" the road. Said casters, comprisingl the ji'orlts 2st and rollers or wheels 9.5, trail from the lower ends otl the standards and are capable ot turning'about vertical ai: ,s when the vehicle is steered. Rearwardly'extending plates are secured to the posts 12 and overlap the standards 23 in vorder to assist in ,guiding said standards and holding` the parts assembled, and rollers 2? are mounted between the plates 26 behind the posts lf2 to bear against the forward edges ot' the standards Adjusting means are provide-d tor adjustably supporting the beams El from the standards 223. F or this purpose, pedestals 2S are secured on the beams 8 behind the standards 23, and worm wheels 29 are mounted 'tor rotation in said pedestals and mesh with rack teeth 30 with which the standards 9.3 are provided at their rear edges. Shafts 31 are journaled in bearings 32 with which the pedestals 28 are provided above the worm wheels 29, and worms are secured on the shafts 31 and mesh with the worm wheels. Thus, the rotation oit Vthe worms will rotate the worm wheels 29, and said worm wheels engagging the raclt teeth 30 oit the standards 23 will cause the worm wheels tc either climb upwardly on the standards or to descend thereon, tor raising or loweringl the beams 8 and blade 7.
@perating shafts 34 extend rearwardly trom the worm shafts 31, and are connected at their forward ends universal joints with the shafts 31, in order that the shafts 35i may entend rearwardly at diil'erent angles to any convenient location on the vehicle. rlhe shafts 34- have cranks 36 or other suitable means at their rear ends for conveniently rotating),` said shafts, and bearings 3? may be provided on the Avehicle in which the shafts 34 are journaled, in order to support said shafts from any suitable part olf the vehicle. Thus, the shafts may be conveniently rotated by the operator or driver ot' the vehicle for :.idjrstingl the scraper blade upwardly or downwardly.
Vrlhe beams 8 are et' different lengths on account ot the blade Y being` disposed obliquely, as seen in 1.. shown in 1 the blade will direct the dirt or snow to the lett in the 'forward movement ot the vehicle. However, the blade l" may be reversed. rthis is done by interchanging the beams 8, and inverting the blade 7, the rods 13 having been detached. Said rods 13 may then be engage-d with the opposite apertures l5, .it being noter that when the blade i7 is inverted there will, in either position of the blade, be apertures 15 in position to receive the rods 13.
'.lhe beams il are braced by rod 38 having an eye 39 at engaging an eye l0 ot' a bolt 1 engaging the longer beam 8, and said bolt` may be one oi the bolts which Ytasten the corresponding` pedestal 28 to said longer beam. The rod 38 has a hook 4t2 aty its opposite end to engage in an eye secured to the shorter beam tl, and said eye ll may be a part ot an eye bolt constituting` the pivot between the shorter beam tl and the corresponding bar 17. llll'hen the beams 8 are interchang'ed to position the blade 'Y in the reverse oblique position, the eye bolts havingl the eyes i0 and t8 are reversed to position said eyes at the inner or adjacent sides ot the beams, as will be apparent.
rl`he device is quickly and conveniently attached to the trout axle ot a motor vehicle so that the device is pushed by the vehicle, and the device may either be used as a road scraper or as a snow plow. in detachingl the device, the bolts 1'6 may be removed to detach the beams 8, leaving,l the bars 17 on the axle. rlhe beams 8 may be swung upwardly, and are supported from the standards Q3 which have the casters at their lower ends that travel on the road, in order to support said beams and the scraper from the casters.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. i device ot the character described comprising a scraper blade, means igor connecting said blade with a vehicle :tor the up and down movement of said blade, members having vertical sliding connection with said means and having` portions to bear on the road, and adjusting means connectingl said members and lirstnamed means for raisingl and lowering` the tirstnamed means on said members.
2. device of the character described comprisingl a scraper blade, means for connecting said blade with a vehicle for the up and down movement olf said blade, stand ards slidabll.T connected with said means, casters connected to the lower ends ot said standards to move on the road, and adjusting means connecting,l said standards and tirstnamed means to raise and lower said hrstuamed means on the standards.
