SIDE-WALL CONSTRUCTION FOR CARS.

lVall Constructions for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the present invention is to provide a railway freight car which will have the maximum width within clearance limits allowed, so as to obtain a maximum capacity and yet permit of the application of the coping members, side sills, side braces or stakes, etc., without materially increasing the over all dimensions of the car.
Another object of the invention is to provide a freight car wall which will permit of the heaping of a greater amount of lading on a car than has heretofore been possible.
Heretofore, in freight cars where a maximum width is desired within clearance limits allowed, it has been customary to bend the upper edge portion of the plates forming the side wall inwardly and securing to such portion an angular coping member, and it is an object of this invention to provide a side wall, the upper portion of which is vertically disposed and the coping member is secured thereto, thus obviating the necessity of bending the upper portion of the plate of the side wall and eliminating the attendant disadvantages of such construction.
Referring to th drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of the side of a railway car embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are like sectional views of modifications of the invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawings the reference character 1 indicates a freight car body which may be of any suitable form or construction, having side walls 2. Each of the side walls 2 comprises a plate 3, the upper portion of which is vertically disposed and is provided with a strengthening or coping member 4. This member 4 is of angular form in cross section having a V-shaped upper portion and a vertically disposed flange 5 extending downwardly therefrom and secured to the upper portion of the plate 3. The upper portion of the member has a downwardly and inwardly sloping portion 6 and a downwardly and outwardly sloping portion 7 which portions are integral and form the V-shaped upper portion of the member, the open side of the V being directed outwardly, i. e., in the direction of the outside of the car. The member 4 when secured to the side plate will be substantially wholly within the vertical plane of the side wall, thus providing a wall construction without the use of the usual coping member having a flange which extends a considerable distance beyond the plane of the side wall which is objectionable when the car is to have the largest carrying capacity within the clearance limits allowed. To further stiffen and strengthen the side wall stakes 8 are provided which are secured to the plate 3 and at their upper ends are se cured to the coping member 4. To stiffen th V-shaped portion of the member 4, braces 9 areprovided which extend between the portions 6 and 7 and are secured there to by rivets or other suitable means, such braces having a strengthening rib 10. Some of these braces form continuations of the stakes 8.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings a modification of the invention has been illustrated in which the vertically disposed flange 5 and the portion 7 are formed from one of the flanges of a rolled angle. In this modification the braces 9 are provided with vertically disposed flanges 11 which overlap the plate 3 and are secured to such plate and member 4.
In Fig. 4 another modification of the invention has been illustrated in which the portion 6 of the member 4 is provided with an outwardly directed portion 12.
In Fig. 5 a further modification of the invention has been illustrated in which the portion 6 of the member 4 is provided with a bulb 13.
The braces 9 in these Figs. 4 and 5 are substantially the same as those described in connection with Fig. 3.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that changes may be made in the details of the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a car, a side having a vertically disposed upper portion, an angular member having a portion of one of its flanges disposed vertically and secured to the upper portion of said side, the remaining portion of said flange being disposed at an angle to said wall and sloping inwardly therefrom, and a. flange extending outwardly at an angle to said remaining portion.
2. In a car, a side wall comprising a vertically disposed upper portion, and a coping member secured to said up 361 portion, said member having a flange tie lower portion of which is vertically disposed and the remaining portion extending upwardly therefrom at an angle, and also having a flange extending upwardly at an angle to both of said portions of the first mentioned flange.
3. In a car, a side wall having a vertically disposed upper portion, a coping member secured to said portion, said member having a plurality of flanges, one of said flanges for a portion of its width being disposed vertically and for the rest of its width being sloped inwardly and upwardly and the other of said flanges being sloped upwardly and outwardly.
4. In a car, a side wall, a coping member for said wall, said member having a vertically disposed portion secured to said wall, and an inwardly extending V-shaped portion above said vertically disposed portion.
5. In acar, a side wall, and a coping member for said wall, said member having a vertically disposed portion secured to said wall, and an inwardly directed V-shaped portion forming an upward extension of said wall.
6. In a car, a side wall, and a coping member forming an upward extension of said wall, said member having a vertically disposed lower portion secured to said wall, and an inwardly directed V-shaped upper portion above the top of said wall.
7. In a car, a side wall, and a coping member secured to said wall, said member having a vertically disposed lower portion and an inwardly directed V-shaped upper portion.
8. In a car, a side wall, a coping memher having a vertically disposed portion secured to said wall and having an inwardly directed V-shaped portion forming the top of said wall and a brace secured to said coping member within said V-shaped portion.
9. In a car, a side wall comprising a coping member having a vertically disposed lower portion and an inwardly directed V-shaped upper portion, a stake for said wall, and a brace secured to said coping member within the V-shaped portion thereof, said brace forming in effect an upward extension of said stake.
10. In a car, a side wall comprising a coping member having a vertically disposed lower portion and an inwardly directed V-shaped upper portion, a stake secured to said wall within said car, a brace secured to said coping member within said V-shaped portion and outside of said car, said brace forming in effect an upward continuation of said stake.
