C. WILCOX GEARING FOR WINDMILLS Filed Jan. 28. 1924 Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
CABBIE WILGOX, OF MART, TEXAS.
GEARING FOR WIND'MILLS.
Application filed. January 28, 1924. Serial No. 689,009.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARBIE VVILCOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mart, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Windmills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a gear drive for windmills and one of the objects of the invention is to provide improved means for converting the rotary motion of the wind wheel into a reciprocating motion for the purpose of operating the pump rod.
A further object is to provide means for operating the gearing in such a manner that the rack will always remain vertical.
A still further object is 'to provide a construction which has few operating parts, that can easily be kept in working order, which are inexpensive to make and easy to assemble.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel and peculiar features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter particularly described, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
The operating parts comprise the head of the mill having a rectangular frame 1, supported by brackets 2 and mounted to rotate in the said frame are the parallel shafts 3 and 4. Keyed to the shaft 4 is the spur gear 5 adapted to engage with the rack 11. Keyed to one end of the shaft 3 is the windwheel 6 and at the other end is the crank 7 having a pin 8 adapted to engage with the slot 9 in the lever 10 secured to the shaft 4.
The upper end of the rack 11 is provided with guide rods 12, working loosely through holes 13 in the frame 1 and engaging a roller 14 carried by brackets 15, which are rigidly secured to the said frame. The lower end 25 of the rack 11 works in a bearing 16 carried by the lower part of the frame The shaft 4 at each end is provided with collars 17, the one near the wind wheel being held against outward movement by another collar 18 setscrewed to the said shaft, and the one at the opposite end being similarly held by the smooth wheel 19 also keyed to the said shaft. The wheel 19, in cooperation with the support (not shown) acts as a stop to prevent rotation of the windwheel when thrown around out of the wind current.
In operation, as the windwheel revolves, the crank 7 revolves with it. By virtue of the engagement of the pin 8 with the slot 9 in the lever 10, the said lever will merely reciprocate thus causing the spur gear 5 to have a rotary reciprocating motion, which in turn is communicated to the rack 11.
From the above description, it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character described, which accomplishes the purpose for which it was intended, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that I reserve the right to all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Therefore, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a transmission for a windwheel, a frame having horizontal top and bottom members and vertical side members, a vertically reciprocating rack provided with guide rods at its upper and lower ends and engaging respectively the said top and bottom members, a horizontal rotary shaft mounted at its ends in the side members and carrying a gear intermediate its ends for engaging the said rack, another rotary shaft parallel with the first named shaiit and mounted intermediate its ends in one of the side members and provided with a crank and pin at its inner end and means for rotating it at its outer end and a lever secured to the first named shaft having a slot for engagement with the said pin, the said lever being located intermediate the said gear and the end of the first named shaft.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARBIE VVILGOX.
