Be it known that I, Louis E. SMITH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in grinding machines, and more particularly to that type or class commonly known as portable grinding machines, the present embodiment of the invention being particularly designed and adapted for use in grind ing and truing up annular contacting surfaces, such as valves and valve seats, and particularly such as are used in connection with internal combustion engines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved grinding ma chine of the type or class indicated which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and eflicient in use.
A further and important object is the provision of a portable machine of this class adapted to be readily connected to and driven from any suitable and convenient source of power and embodying improved means for holding and feeding the abrasive tool at any desired angle to the annular surface being operated upon so that the valve parts will be trued up and restored to their proper original positions.
A still further and important object is the provision of improved guide and tool carrying spindles, together with improved mechanism for driving the tool carrying spindle and for adjusting and securing the tool carryingspindle in variable positions to meet the'varying demands of actual service.
A still further object is the provision of improved guide and tool carrying spindles having improved connecting and adjusting means, the guide shaft or spindle being provided at one end with an eccentrically located pilot element adapted to enter the valve stem receiving opening of the valve part to be reseated whereby the abrasive tool may be accurately held to its work on the annular valve surface being ground and whereby such active grinding surface of the grinding or abrasive tool may be progressively shifted circumferentially to accurately .reseat the valve seat.

construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I
Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a grinding machine constructed in accordance with this invention, the horizontally movable or swivelly mounted yoke and the tool carrying spindle and spindle driving mechanism being removed.

The improved machine preferably comprises a suitable bed or base 1, said bed or base, in the present instance, including a frame as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings and being provided at its corners with supports or legs 1. The frame or bed 1 is provided with a guide 2, eXtending from one side to the other, said guide 2, in the present instance, being in the specific being removed for the purpose of clearer form of a hollow angular shaped guide secured at its ends by means of clamps 2 and fastening elements or bolts 2*.
A slide head 3, is mounted on the guide member 2, said slide being adapted to be actuated or fed by means of a feed screw at, suitably mounted in the bed or frame 1, and provided with an operating handle P.
A yoke is swivelled upon the slide head 3 and is provided with a second guide 6. In the present instance, the guide 6 is similar in form to the guide member 2 and is secured within the ends of the yoke by means of clip or clamp members 5 connected to the ends of the yoke members by means of fastening elements 5 The second guide 6 is provided with a second slide head 7, and a feed screw 8, mounted in suitable bearings at the ends of the yoke 5, is provided with a-handle 8, for moving or feeding the slide head 7 in a suitable manner. In the present instance, the slide or hearing head 7 is made of two parts, the lower part being provided with depending lugs 7 between which a threaded nut 7 is mounted, said threaded nut or element7 being engaged by the feed screw 8.
It will be seen that the yoke 5 is swivelly connected to the slide 3 by means of a bolt 5" and the second head or slide 7 is provided with a second yoke 9, swivelled on said second slide 7 in a manner similar to the first yoke 5 and connected by means of a bolt 9 The second yoke 9 is provided with suitable bearings 9 within which is mounted a spindle 10, provided at one end with an operating handle 10, and at the other with a suitable chuck 10", adapted to receive and clamp and hold the work or article to be operated upon, such for eXample,-as a valve stem 11*, of a valve 11, when operated upon by a suitable abrasive tool carried by driving spindle operating mechanism, to be hereinafter described.
The bed 1 is provided with a third'yoke 12, mounted, in the present instance, on a bearing member 13, provided with an upwardly extending swivel bolt 13". The yoke 12 is provided with a suitable bearing portion 12, adapted to extend over the swivel bolt 13 and to coact with the bearing portion of the bearing block 13. The ends of the yoke 12 terminate in split clamping heads'12 (see Fig. 8), adapted to receive and carry a suitable guide shaft or spindle 14:, for carrying the tool carrying driving spindle and spindle actuating and guiding mechanism, hereinafter referred to.
When it is desired to grind a relatively fixed annular valve surface, such for ex ample,-as a valve seat 15 in a cylinder head orblock 15, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, a guide shaft or spindle 16 of the specific form shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings is preferably applled in connection with the tool carrying driving spindle and the spindle. driving'means. In the present instance, the tool carrying driving spindle 17 is in the specific form of a sleeve spindle rotatably mounted on the guide spindle 16 through the medium of suitable anti-friction bearings, such as the rollers 18, said spindle 17 being provided at one end with a pinion 17 meshing with a driving gear 19. The gear 19 is mounted on an axle 19, keyed to the gear 19, said axle being provided at its ends with annular bearings 19", forming ball race-ways for the ball bearings 20, working against surrounding annular bearing rings 20 The gears are closed by a two-part gear casing consisting of a plate 21, having an eXteriorly threaded lug portion 21, to receive a stub or extension 19 of the axle carrying the gear, and a second plate 21", provided with supports for the annular ball race-ways including annular ball bearing plates 22, having balls 22, for supporting the upper or pinion end of the spindle 17.
The end of the spindle 17 is threaded to receive and carry an internally threaded tool hub or holder 23, adapted to receive and carry a suitable abrasive tool 2 1, such as a grinding wheel, or the like, such abrasive wheel or tool, in the present instance, being secured by means of a nut 2%. If desired, an adapter holder 23, may be used if it is desired to change the form of the abrasive tool, as for exa1nple,the abrasive tool 24*, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The stub portion 19 of the axle may be provided with a cross pin 19 to be engaged by slots formed in a head 25*, of a flexible shaft 25, leading to any convenient source of power, as for example,a motor or the like. It will be seen that the flexible shaft 25 is surrounded by a sheathing 25 7 As a means of moving or adjusting the sleeve spindle 17 circumferentially and l0ngitudinally of the guide shaft or spindle 16, the gear plate 21 is provided with an exteriorly threaded boss 21, upon which is mounted an interiorly threaded adjusting sleeve 26, said sleeve 26 being provided at one end with a flange 2.6, resting against a setof ball bearings 27, cooperating with a threaded flanged ring 28, threaded upon a second ring 29, the latter being provided with a recess 29 surrounding the opening which receives the guide shaft or spindle 16. Mounted in the recess 29 is aqsplit clamp ring 30, adapted to cooperate with a bevelled seat portion 31, of the threaded wheel or hub 31, said hub 31 being threaded on the exteriorly threaded hub portion of the ring 29. It will be obvious that by moving the adjusting wheel 21 in one direction Or the other the clamping ring 30 may be securely moved into and out of clamping As a means of effectively holding the tool 24 of the spindle 17 in proper position against one side of the annular surface or seat of the valve seat being ground and of adjusting such point of contact and also progressively shifting such point of contact circumferentially about the annular surface 15*, the guide shaft or spindle 16 is provided at one end with an eccentrically arranged pilot element 16, adapted to enter the valve stem receiving opening 15', of the valve seat being ground, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The upper end of the guide spindle 16 may, if desired, be provided with an angular or square shaped head 16 to receive a wrench for shifting the guide shaft, if desired, and in getting the proper adjustment between the various parts, as well as feeding the active surface of the abrasive tool into active contact with the surface being reground.
When it is desired to grind a valve 11 as indicated in Fig. 9 of the drawings, such valve may be mounted in the chuck 10 of the machine and the working parts shown in Figs. 3 and 4 mounted on the guide shaft or spindle 14 on the yoke 12, shown in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, such yoke being mounted in an upright position on the swivel bolt 13 and being adapted to be adjusted or moved to the proper desired angle with respect to the valve head 11 held in the chuck.
Hvaing thus described one of the embodiments of my invention, without having atcarrying spindle, and power driven connections leading from said gearing.
2. In a grinding machine, a guide shaft provided at one end with an eccentrically arranged pilot, a tool carrying spindle on said guide shaft provided with a tool in proximity to said pilot, a gear casing, means for connecting said casing to said guide shaft in varying positions, a gearing in said casing operatively connected to said tool carrying spindle, a power driven flexible connection leading from said gearing, and means for adjusting said tool carrying spindle and spindle driving gearing in variable positions relative to said guide shaft and pilot.
