JACK.
e Application filed October 11, 1924. Serial No. 743,047.
' ticularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with motor driven vehicles and it is an object of the invention to provide a jack constructed in a novel and improved manner whereby a relatively low frame may be employed and at the same time permitting an efiective' lift of thecar.
Another object of the inventionis to'provide a novel and improved device of this general character which maybe employed to advantage in connection with an axle of a motor driven vehicle or the like which is positioned unusually low.
The invention consists in the'details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved jack whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 IS a view in elevation illustrating a jack constructed in accordance with'an embodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device as illustrated in Figural; I Figure 3 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the device as herein disclosed, the line of section being substantially at right angles to that of Flgure 2;
Figure 4 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section of the device,
as herein disclosed;
As disclosed in the accompanying draw! 'ings, B denotes the base or frame of our improved jack which is relatively low. The base B comprises a cylindrical body l provided at its lower endwith 'a supporting to certain improve plate 2 herein disclosed as integrally formed therewith.
The opposite orupper end of the cylindrical body 1' is closed by the head or plate 3 partially extending within the body 1 and held or locked in applied position by the screw 4 or its equivalent.
The central portion of the head or plate 3 has threaded therethrough the tubular jack screw 5 the lower end portion of which being defined by an outstanding flange 6 fitting within an upstanding annular holding flange 7 carried by the plate 8. The' swiveled connection between the stem 5 and flanges 6 and 7 coact in a manner to effect a the plate 8.
The plate 8 is non-rotatable and as herein setforth is held against rotation by the diametrically opposed pairs of ears 9 each pair of which receiving therebetween a rib 1O carried by the inner wall of the cylindrical member 1. While the ears 9 coact with the ribs 10 to hold the plate 8 against rotation yet no hindrance-or obstruction is offered to the. movement of the plate 8 lengthwise of the body 1 as the jack screw 5 has longitudinal movement in either direction.
The bore of the jack screw 5 is interiorly threaded, said interior threads 12 being reversed with respect to the exterior threads 14. In threaded engagement with said interior threads 12' through the outer end of the jack screw 5 is an outer or upper jack screw 15. The outer extremity of the screw 15 is provided with the lifting head or rest 16 which may be formed or designed as desired. Fixed to the plate 8 at the axial ,center thereof is an upstanding bar or post 17 angular in cross section and of desired length, The upper or outer end portion of which being received within the bore 18 of the jack screw 15 said bore being of substantially the same cross sectionalconfiguration as that of the bar or post 17. This bar or post 17 operates to hold the jack screw 5 against rotation so that as the screw 5 is re ated in'one' direction the screw 15 will beica'used to have lo itndinal move- -ment in the same general irection as the longitudinal movement of the screw 5.
It is to be noted that the bar or post 17 terminates a distance inwardly of the outer end of the screw 5 so that upon outward movement of the screw 15 a predetermined distance, the bar or post 17 will be disengaged from the screw 15. By'this means it is assured that the screw 15 will not accidentally separate from the screw 5.
The screw 5 is provided therealong with a longitudinalguideway 19 in which is received an inwardly directed lug 20- carried by the annular gear 21, said gear being arran ed Within the cylindrical bod 1' of the base B. By this mounting of t c gear 21 the screw 5 may be readily rotated and at the same time be capable of the requisite endwise movement. The gear 21 is posi: tioned above and operatively engaged with a second gear 22 which is properly positioned with respect to the gear 21 through an opening 23 provided in an upper portion of the wall of the body 1. This gear 22 is carried by a shaft 24 rotatably supported by the bearing 25. This bearing 25 is comprised in an arm 26 supported by the body 1 and disposed across the opening 23. The outer end portion of the shaft 24 is provided with a notched wheel 27 with which coacts in a well-known manner the ratchet lever 28 whereby the gear 22 may be rotated in either direction as. the occasions of practice may necessitate.
A jack constructed in accordance with an embodiment of ourinve'ntion is particularly adapted for use in connection with motor driven vehicles and especially where the axle is unusually low and while the base or frame B is materially low insize yet the Tcjrews 5 and 15 cooperate to effect a high it. y
From the foregoing description it is throught to be obvious that a jack con-- structed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason I of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of somechange and modification without departing from the'principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carry-v ing out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. We claim v A' jack comprising, in combination, a tubular base having its upper end open and provided in its side wall with an opening, anarm supported by the base exteriorly thereof and disposed across the opening, a head closing the open end of the base, a tubular jack screw threaded through said head, a plate in swiveled connection with the inserted end portion of the jack screw, coacting means carried by said second named plate and the wall of the member for holding the plate against rotation independently of the member, a second jack screw threaded into the first'jack screw through the outer end thereof, said second jack screw having its inserted portion provided with a bore, an
upstandin post carried by the second plate and exten ing within the bore of the second jack screw, said post and bore being angular in cross section to hold the second jack screw against rotation when the post is engaged within the bore of said second jack screw, said post having its upper end terminating inwardly of the outer end of the first named jack screw, a gear within \the first. member and surrounding :said first named screw, means-for keying said gear to the first named screw'for rotation with said screw but permitting said screw to run therethrough, a gear rotatably supported by the arm extending across the opening in the CARL c.
