UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY WHITESIDE, JR, OF OTTAWA, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,689, dated Octobcr6,1874; application filed May 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WHITESIDE, Jr., of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed- Bottom, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates particularly to the construction of the framefor containing or supporting the springs and slats forming the bed-bottom proper.
In the drawing, Figures 1, 2, 3 are, respectively, a plan and longitudinal and cross section of the frame, with springs, slats, and other parts of the bed-bottom proper.
I make no claim to essential novelty in respect to the latter, the springs E, longitudinal slats B resting thereon, and diagonal and cross strips (webbing) F and G, which connect the slats, being arranged in a manner heretofore adopted.
The frame is composed of side bars B, bottom slats A, supporting the springs, posts or blocks 0, and headed screw-bolts D. The bars B are arranged parallel to each other, and the slats A are also parallel one to another, but transverse or at right angles to the bars, and in a plane below them, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the blocks 0 and bolts D serving as the means of connection and support. The blocks 0 are preferably cylindrical in form, and the bolts pass through them and the slats A and bars B, having screw-nuts at the top, so that the parts may be secured rigidly together. The blocks 0 serve to keep said slats and bars equidistantly separated, and support the latter on the former, the slats resting on the cleats of the side rails of the bedstead when the bed-bottom is in use.
This construction of frame secures various advantages in respect to strength andrigidity also, length and elasticity of the springs, and secure attachment or connection of the longitudinal slats to the bars B, While the several parts composing it (the frame) may be readily taken apart to be packed or transported, and as readily put together.
What I claim is The improved bed-bottom frame formed of u
