In the event of complete rupture or breakage of the propeller shaft 15, the curved" portions 24:, 25 of the bracket 21 coact with the groove 20 27 of the. extension or collar 19 to longitudinally lock and thereby safeguard the propeller 16 from dropping into the'se'a. The coaction of the groove 20 and collar- 19 with itssupport, such as the semiannular portions 24, 25 affords a support for the propeller proper, 16 independently of the propeller shaft 15,,and. thereby, relieving the propeller shaft 15 of stresses and strains in the normal operation of the drive of'the' propeller 16 by the propeller shaftql5. e
When it becomes necessary or desirable to repair the propeller shaft while the ship is at sea, uponremoval of the propeller sha'ft15 from connectionwith the propeller f 16, the extension or collar. 19 retains the 95 propeller 16 substantially in normal position.
If desired, suitable lubrication 'may be provided between the bearing faces" of the A semrannular portion 24, 25 ofthe bracket 1 21 and the bearing face '27 of the collar 19;

The combination with a ship having a propeller shaft, .of a propeller, removable means for fixedly securing said propeller to said propeller shaft, anextension se- 120 cured tols'aid propeller, said extension being provided with an opening for reception of the propeller shaftan'd' means carried by the ship for rotatably normally freely receiving said extension and for'retaining the 12 same in the event of breakage of the propeller shaft, said mounting means comprising a removable portion to permit said extension to be removed from said mounting means- 2.
