UNITED STATE PATENT OFFIcE,
J AOOB SHAABER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,679, dated October 6, 1874; application filed J one 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SHAABER, of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a'specification:
Figure l is a side View of my improved carcoupling. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i J
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the front of the car, and B the draw-beam, to which the hook O is attached in the ordinary way. The forward end of the hook O is inclined, so that, when the loop or clevis D strikes against it as the cars are run together, the said loop may slide up the said hook and drop into its cavity, coupling the said cars. The forward part or bend of the loop or clevis D is beveled upon its lower side, so that the loops or clevises may slide over each other, and the lower one slide up the hook with certainty and without jamming. The arms of the loop or clevis D fit upon the opposite sides of the base of the hook O, and are secured to it by a bolt, E, which is secured in place by a nut or key. The arms .dof the loop or clevis D project downward, and are bent to the rearward, so as to pass in beneath the beam B, to support the said loop or clevis in a horizontal position. F is a spring of rubber or other suitable material attached to the under side of the beam B, to receive the ends of the arms (1 of the loop or clevis D, and support the forward part of said loop or clevis in proper position to couple the cars as they are run together. The spring F may be covered with a guard-plate to prevent it from being worn by the arms d of the loop or clevis D. As'the cars are run together, and as the lower loop or clevis slides up upon the hook C, it will raise the upper loop into an erect position, so
that it will be caught by the outwardly-projecting hook Gr, pivoted to the front A of the car, so as to be entirely out of the way.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a pivoted link, to be upturned by the coupling of another link, with the catch G, as and for the purpose set forth.
J AOOB SHAABER. \Vitnesses:
ADAM JOHNSTON, DANIEL SHAABER.
