' v Application fi led September 27, 1924.? Serial llo. 740,419. I
To all whom itmmy concern: I
Be it known that I, EUTROP RoBIon Ann, subject of the iKing of; Great i Britain, residing at Chatham, in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorknobs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention pertains to a novel door knob so constructed that the outer or exposed sleeve extending from the bulb does not rotate with the bulb.
In the embodiment of this construction there is provided a sleeve which is fixed to the lock plate. The sleeve contains a rela tively rotatable shank from which extends the usual spindle The outer end of the shank extends beyond the sleeve and is provided with lugs by means of which the bulb is attached thereto. The bulb is further held in place by means of a locking ring secured thereto and loosely surrounding the sleeve.
For use in connection with a glass or vitreous bulb, the latter is formed with a plurality of recesses in which are inserted wooden blocks. The locking ring is thus applied in such a manner as to engage the blocks and is secured to the bulb by means of screws threaded into the blocks.
The invention is fully disclosed in the followingdescription and in the accompanying drawings in which: I
Figure 1 is an edge view of the door provided with a door knob according to the invention, shown partly in section;
Figure 2 is a section ofthe'door knob, partly in elevation;
Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a' section on the line H of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a section of a modified form, partly in elevation;
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is an inside elevation of the lock plate, showing the spindle in section;
Figure 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 6;
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the shank and spindle; and
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 -3 of Figure 10 isia s'ection on the; line 10+.10 of Figure 5. 1 I Reference will nowbe hadzto theseviews by means of like characters which are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
- The numeral 1 indicates a door of usual construction, provided at its opposite faces and near the free edge thereof with lock plates 2. Since these plates and the parts associated therewith are identical, a description of one will suflice. The present plate is characterized by a hollow conical abutment 3 extending outwardly therefrom.
A square spindle 1 is passed through the two plates and the door. Each end is fitted into a shank or sleeve 5'provided at its outer end with a circular head 6 from which extend a plurality of lugs 7 The shank 5 is surrounded by a sleeve 8, the inner end of which is reduced and threaded as at 9 and adapted for entry in the abutment 3, as shown in Figure 1. The remaining end is formed with a flange 10, the purpose of which is pointed out below.
The reduced end 9 is provided with a pair of keys 11 which fit into corresponding slots 12 formed in the inner surface of the abutment 3. This construction prevents rotation of the sleeve 8. Over the outer end of the sleeve is fitted a handle or bulb 13 having a recess, the abutment 14 of which has the configuration of the head 6 and lugs 7 for receiving these parts. Above the abutment is formed a groove 15 in the wall of the recess for receiving the flange 10. Above the groove-15 is formed still another and larger groove 16. I This groove receives a locking ring 17 which bears against the inner surface of the flange 10 and is attached to the bulb by means of screws 17 A conical nut 18 is threaded on the end 9 and fills the interior of the abutment 3. The nut has a pair of apertures 19 in its upper surface for the reception of a tightening tool in the assembly of the device.
In Figures 5, 6, 8 and 10 is shown a modified construction for use with a glass or vitreous bulb 20. The wall of the recess in the bulb is formed with a plurality of slots 21 extending from the intermediate groove 15. These slots receive wooden blocks 22 which are engaged by the locking ring 17 The attaching screws 17 thus enter the wooden blocks.
In the use of the device, the knob turns the shank and spindle but rotates on the sleeve 8 which is firmly secured to the lock plate.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A door knob comprising in combination with a lock plate having a conical abutment, a sleeve having a threaded end receivedin said abutment, a conical nut applied to said threaded end, a shank rotatably mounted in said sleeve, a spindle carriedby said shank, a plurality of lugs extending from the outer end of said shank, a bulb applied over said lugs in looking engagement therewith, and a locking ring loosely surrounding said sleeve and secured to said bulb.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
EUTROP ROBIGHAUD.
