Description

Patented Oct. 13, 192.5.
UNITED STATES P ATEN'r i WILLMM LAWRENCE, or. cIIIcAGo, ILLINOIS.
YIENTILATING DEVICE.
Application flied 'February 13, 1922. Serial No. `536,000.
To all whom t mayconccrn:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM, LAwnnNon, a citizen of the United States, .anda resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of -Illlinoi's,have :invented certain new and useful Improvements-fina Ventilating Device; and I do, hereby `:declare that the following is a full, clearand exact description o-f the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a Ventilating device for dwelling rooms or the like, and it is an object of this invention to provide a ventilator equipped with cutting orrboring elements whereby the device may be readily attached in a wall or the like.
It is a further object of this invention to equip the same with a sensitive fan that is responsive to ordinary air currents whereby a forced Ventilation is secured.
With these and other objects in view, which will become more apparent in the `following description and disclosures, this invention comprises the novel mechanisms and combinations hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out'and defined in the appended claim. Y
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of this invention, and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved Ventilating device.
Figure 2 is a section through awallor ceiling showing the Ventilating device in elevation.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the ventilating fan.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section through the device illustrating a one-way l yielding stop for the fan that may be employed.
As shown on the drawings:
In referring now tothe drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of this invention,
. the numeral 1 represents a hollow cylindrical member provided with a hollow cylindrical extension 2 communicating with the interior of said member and in -which there are a plurality of slots or Ventilating vents 3. The end of the extension is closed a metal/head t which forms a support 'for a cutting or boring element in lthe form. 0f a centering bit 5 which may be attached thereto in any well-known way. Inl the Ypltselit instance, .depressions are formed in the 11pperasurface. of the head 4t into which tongues or lugs stamped from the base of the Dcutting element'project to prevent relative rotation between the head and cutting element, the cutting element being anchored to the head by its pointed centering element 7 which is separately formed and provided with a reduced threaded shank screwing centrally into the head 4.
The centering bit or cutting element 5 is adapted for making a hole in the wall or ceiling and through the lath thereof. And
`in order to securely retain the extension 2 A cap 8 having aplurality of Ventilating vents or apertures 9 is screw threaded into the outer end of the cylindrical member 1, and a shutter 10 provided withk an operating handle 1l issuperimposed upon the upper or inner side of the cap k8 and is rotatably adjustable for opening or closing saidV vents. y
A jewel bearing 12'is secured centrally of the cap 8 and extends upwardly into the hollow cylindrical member 1 for rotatably supporting a highly sensitive circular fan 13 having inclined vanes or blades 14 whichy are adapted to be acted upon by air currents for rotating the fan whereby the fan might be said to be responsiveV to air currents.
In order that the fan 13 will be prevented from rotating in the wrong direction for emittingv currents of air from the room, a slender hair spring l5 or the like may be secured upon the upper wall of the cylindrical member and bent downwardly to engage the blades of the an against reverse rotation, the spring exing over the blades ior direct rotation of the fan.
This Ventilating device is adapted to be secured in a wall or ceiling 16 backed by laths 17, as illustrated in Figure 2, the hollow Ventilating extension extending into the hollow space between the Walls or the room or between the ceiling and ioor above, through which currents air are generaliy circulating.
From the foregoing description, it xviii be apparent that l have invented a novel forni of ventilator ''or a dwelling that is designed to bore its own .securing aperture in the wall, that is equipped with a highly sensitive fan responsive t0 air currents to produce rotation thereof for forcing a draft or' air from the room.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles o this invention, and l thereore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described a ventilator comprising a hollow cylindrical meinber, a cap member threaded in said hollow cylindrical member, said cap having vents, a bearing pin supported by said cap, a shutter rotatable on said pin for closing said vents, said pin extending through said shutter, and a sensitive an rotatably n'iounter'i on said pin.
In testimony whereol l have hereunto subscribed my name.
WILLAM LAVVREE UE.
