UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- IRA M. HARDY, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-DRIVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155.650, dated October 6, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.
a pinion, a two-part extension-brace, hinged in front and having a rack on one of its faces, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved post-driver, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p
A represents the truck, which I propose to make a little wider and a little. longer than a common farm-wagon, but such a wagon may be used. B represents the upright guides for the hammer of a pile-driver, which are attached to the hind side of the hind bolster O, and the bolster is connected to the axle by a universal joint, D, and provided with an adjusting-brace, E, which is jointed to the axle at F to swing forward and backward, and connected at the top to the uprights B, so that they can shift laterally to the wagon on it, and they have a cranked pinion, G, gearing with a toothed portion of the brace, by which to shift them along it for righting them when the truck stands on uneven ground. The uprights are shifted forward and backward by an extensible brace, H, connected to the top and extending to the front axle, or to the reach near the axle, where it is jointed so as to swing with the uprights as they are adjusted sidewise or forward and backward. This brace is made of two parts, which slide along each other, and one is toothed to be worked by a pinion, J, on the other, turned by a hand-crank or wrench, K. The rope L for hoisting the hammer passes under a guidepulley, M, at the hind axle and alongto the front of the wagon, where a horse will be hitched to it for hoisting the hammer. Another horse will be used for pulling the machine along to shift it from place to place. N represents cables for fastening the hind axle to stakes O, for preventing the machine from being drawn by the rope which hoists the hammer.
By disconnecting the brace H at one end the guides may be laid down on the front bolster F for being transported conveniently.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The two-part extension-brace H, hinged in front and having rack on one of its faces,
in combination with pinion J, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The upright guides B, bolster G, toothed adjustingbrace E, and pinion G, combined and arranged substantially as specified.
IRA M. HARDY.
