Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OPETOE.
WM. W. HOPKINS, OF GHESTERFIELD FACTORY, NEW HAMPSHIRE.`
KNIFE-GLEANER.
` Specication of Letters Patent No. 15,562,` dated August 19, 1856.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. W. HOPKINS, of Chesterfield Factory, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Implement Or Device for Securing Knives Or other Cute. lery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichy Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement, the plane Of section being through the center. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, (y), (y), Fig. l, showing the plane of section.
Similar letters Of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in the employment or use of reciprocatingelastic rubbers and an elastic bolster arranged as will be hereinafter fully shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a bed plate of rectangular form and of a suitable length and width. Each side of the bed plate has anupright plate or board (a), attached tO it, and ways (b), (b), are placed on the bed plate, o`ne at each side as shownin Fig. 2.
B, represents a board which is placed transversely on the bed plate A, and between the plates or boards (a) (a), the ends of said board fitting and working upon the ways (b), To the upper surface of the board B,there are attached two rods (c), (c), on which a board C, is placed the rods passing through the board one end of which rests upon a spiral spring (d), placed on one end Of the rods. To the upper surface of the board B, there are attached two corks (e), and two similar corks (g), are att-ached to the under surface of the board C, 4the corks being in line with each other, that is each two.
D, represents a bolster which is a flat board resting upon spiral springs (h), (it), placed on rods (i), attached to one end of the bed plate A, the rods passing through holes in the bolster.
The knives to be cleaned are placed atwise on the bolster D, the blades being between the corks which are moved back and forth by hand, the upper `board C, being pressed down by hand as the corks are moved. A wire (j), passes transversely through the plates or boards (a), (a) to serve as a stop. The bolster D, being elastic, blades of different thicknesses may be scoured. Any suitable polishing material may be employed.
I do not limit myself tO the use of corks as other material may be employed; leather, for instance, placed on pieces of wood might answer equally as well.
One pair of scourers (f), (f1) have rounded faces in order that the blade near the handle may be polished.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The reciprocating scourers (e), (f), (f1), (g), and elastic bolster D, arranged as shown and described, for thepurpose set forth.`
