To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it-knownthat l, ,SB/IITTITI A. Home, a citi zen of the United States, residing at' Rices Landing, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Manicure Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ,n'ian-icure device and the primary object thereof is to provide a -device of the class stated whicli combines a plurality of: necessary instru ments adaptable for manicuring operations.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of; the character described in a manner as hereinafter set fortlnwhich issimple iniits construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient inits use, compact and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. Y
To the accomplishment of these. and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts here-- in specifically described and illustrated in he accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
in the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved manicure device with the instruments embodied therein in the open position.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof in the closed position.
Figure 3 is a front end view of the device.
Figure i is a bottom plan view of the file element.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the spring element.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the knife blade.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 denotes an elongated fiat body portion having its forward end formed to provide a stationary clipping jaw 2, of considerable greater width than the width of the body portion 1.
A bar spring 3 is attached along the margin of one longitudinal side edge of the top f ce of the body portion 1 and is secured thereto, at its approximate center, by the rivets l. The forwardend ofthe bar spring 3 is formed with an inwardly.disposed'spring portion 5: which is split transverselydivid ing the latter intoan upwardly inclinedsection anda-downwardly inclined section, as shown in Figurefi, Qf'the drawing and fol, the phrposetObe described. l
The shift'able clippingjaw 6 is'carriedat the, forward end ofthe operating lever 7 and ef ztends' laterally beyond theside edgesthereof; T is lever 7 is pivotally connectedto the forward end of the, body portion 1- and extendsrearwardly over the bod-y portion 1. The split inwardly disposed spring portion of" the barspring 23, engages the lower face of" the lever 7 and normallyacts'to shift the aws 2 and "6 to the open position. Thefdepressing of the lever 7 actuates the jaw 6'during the nail clipping operation:
The jaWQis. provided with an singularly disposed cutting "edge. 29 which overlaps the jaw 6 when the two jaws are in the closed position. By this construction the jaws 2 and 6 co-act with a shearing action which will facilitate the nail clipping operations.
An ordinary cutting blade 8 is pivotally connected on the rear end of the body portion 1 by the pivot pin 9. The rear end of the bar spring 3 engages the inner end of the cutting blade 8 and serves to maintain the latter in the open or closed positions in a manner employed in pocket knife construction and operation.
A file member 10 is pivotally connected at its rear end to the body portion 1 by the pivot pin 9, and is positioned on the top of the knife blade 8. The outer portion of the file member 10 terminates in a point 11 and is offset, as indicated at 12 to permit of its overlapping engagement of the aw 2 when the device is in the folded position.
When the device is in the folded position, as shown in Figure 2, of the drawing, the blade 8 will be positioned flatly on the inner face of the body portion 1 with the spring bar 3. The lever 7 will be secured inthe depressed position on the blade 8 by the overlapping engagement of the file element 10 therewith and maintains the aws 2 and 6 in the closed position.
A manicuring device in accordance with my invention combining a plurality of manicuring instruments each of which may be readily manipulated for the purposes designed and may be compactly folded toget-her. By constructing the jaws 2 and 6 to project laterally beyond the side edges of the body portion 1 and lever 7 respectively, the adjustment of the jaws 2 and 6 to the nail, during the clipping operation is greatly facilitated.
W hat I claim is:
1. In combination, a device for the purpose set forth comprising a flat elongated body portion having its forward end formed to provide a clipping jaw, a lever pivotally connected to said body portion and having its forward end formed to provide a clipping jaw, said lever shiftable to actuate the said jaw carried thereby to provide a shearing action in conjunction with the jaw carried by said body portion, a cutting blade pivotally connected to the rear end of said body portion, a spring element connected to said body portion, one end of said spring element engaging said lever for normally maintaining the said jaws in the open position and the other end of said spring member engaging said cutting blade for maintaining the latter in either the open or closed position, and a file member pivotally connected with the rear end of said body portion and shii'table to overlap said lever for maintaining the device in the closed position.
2. In combination, a device for the purpose set forth comprising a flat elongated body portion having its forward end formed to provide a clipping jaw, the ends of said jaw project laterally beyond the respective side edges of said body portion, a lever pivotally connected to said body portion and having its forward end formed to provide a clipping jaw, corresponding in width to the jaw carried by said body portion, one of said jaws having an angularly disposed cutting edge and overlapping the other of said jaws, when said lever is depressed, a cutting blade having one end thereof pivotally connected to the rear end of said body portion, a spring element connected to said body portion, one end of said spring element provided with an angularly split portion engaging said lever and serving as an actuating member therefor for normally maintaining said jaws in the open position and the other end of said spring member engaging said cutting blade for maintaining the latter in either the open or closed position, and a file member pivotally connected with the rear end of said body portion and shiftable to overlap said lever for maintaining the device in the closed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SMITH A. HOGE.
