To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. MIKE- sELL and HARRY F. GILLIAM, citizens of the United States, and residents of Kansas City, county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Photoprinting Apparatus, of which the following is a complete specification;
This invention relates to photo-printing apparatus and has for its object to produce means whereby the printing opening may be varied in extent in order to accommodate prints of diii'erent dimensions.
Another object is to produce means for reliably holding in position the print so that the downward swing of the cover member shall not disturb the position of the print with regard to the underlying negative.
A still further object is to produce a device possessing ,certain novel and useful features of construction and organization of parts as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

The operating arms of the two pairs of masks, respectively, engage right and left handed threaded rtions of the shafts 12 and 15, in order t at rotation of the shafts shall cause the masks of each pair to move forward or away from each other, said shafts being journaled in brackets 13 and 16 depending from the underside of the table as will be readily understood.
JThe shaft 12 is fitted at its outer end with an operating. crank 14, which will forward of the front edge of the tab e in a convenient position for use, it being understood that its rotation will cause the relative approaching or receding movements of the masks 7, thus regulating the width of the exposed area of the glass plate 2 for printin purposes. Shaft 15 is equipped at one en with a gear wheel 17 which meshes with a gear wheel 18 journaled in a downwardly depending bracket 19, and adapted for rotation by a crank handle 20. Rotation of said handle effects opening or closing movement of the masks 6, and thus the length of the exposure opening for printinpurposes ma be convenientl regulated.

It has been found desirable to provide some sort of clamping means for holding the print paper in position just as the cover member attains its horizontal position, and for this purpose we have provided the rear mask 7 with a series of-ears 23 between which are pivoted the rear vend of a series of forwardly extending fingers 24 with their front ends connected by a clamping jaw 25, adapted to clamp down and hold 'the print paper by contacting with one margin of the same, as will hereinafter appear. It will be apparent that the cover plate 5 vwill in its downward movement come into contact with the arms 24 and press the clampin member 25 down upon the print paper. n order that said clamping member may be immediately withdrawn from position when the cover member moves upwardly each arm 24 reject springs being enga is engaged by a sliding collar 26, and secured to each collar is a s ring 27 tending to'raise the clampin jaw rom contact with the print paper, t e other end of said ged and heldin position inilugs 28 projecting upwardly from the surface of the table, as illustrated. It will be evident that this sliding arrangement is provided, in order that the springs may maintain a lifting action on the clamping jaw, disregarding the position of theclamping jaw which carries said jaw carrying frame, as will be readily understood, and that said jaw will therefore always be in position to clamp down.on the marginof a print, regardless of the width thereof. In order to aid in placin a print P in position over the negative the rear mask 7 is provided with an upwardly extending rib or shoulder 29 against which one edge of the print is adapted to abut, and one member of the pair of masks 6 is provided with a shoulder or rib 30 against which another edge of the print is adaptedl to abut, as will be readily understood, it being apparent that if a print is placed in abutting relation with rthe lugs it will be in the correct printing position over the negative.
From the above description, it will be apparent that we have produced a device of the character' described, which possesses all of the features of advantage set forth as desirable, and While we have described and claimed the preferred embodiment of the same, we reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a photo-printing device, the combi.
nation of a table, a negative supporting panel in said table, a mask movable across said panel, and a clamping jaw pivoted to said mask.
2. In a photo-printing device, the kombination of a table, a negative supporting panel in said table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a mask movable across said panel, and a clamping jaw pivoted to said mask.
3. In a photo-printing device, |the combination of a table, a negative supporting panel in said table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a mask movable across said panel, and a clam ng jaw pivoted to said mask and' adapte to be actuated by said cover member to'clamp the print paper between said jaw and panel.
4. In a photo-printing device, the combination of a table, a negative supporting panel in said table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a mask movable across said panel, a clamping jaw pivoted to said mask and adapted to be' actuated by said cover member, and yielding means for autodue to movements of the mask matically returning said clam to normal position after. actuation by sai cover mem- 5. In a photo-print device, the combination of a table, a negative supporting panel in said table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a pair of masks resting on and movable toward and away from each other and transversely ofthe table across said panel, a clamping jaw pivoted on one of said pair of masks, and a pair of masks resting on and movable toward and away from each other and longitudinally of said table across said panel.

In a photo-printing device, the combination of a table, a negative supportin panel in said table, a pair of masks adap for movement longitudinaly of said table across said anel, means for simultaneousl moving sai masks away or 'toward eac other, a second pair of masks ada ted for movement transversely of said tab e across said panel, means for simultaneousl movingr said second pair of masks away rom or toward each other, a shoulder on one of said first-named pair of masks, and a second shoulder disposed at ri ht angles to said first-named shoulder am? carried by one of said second pair of masks, said shoulders cooperating to form a guide for the placing o a print.

In a photoprint device, the combination of a table, a negative supporting panel in said talle, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a pair of masks resting on and movab e toward and from each other and transversely of said table, a shoulder on one of said transversely movable masks adapted to act as an abutment for a print, a pair of masks resting on and movable toward and from each other and longitudinally of said table, and a shoulder on one of said longitudinally movable masks adapted to act as an abutment for a print and at right angles to said first-named shoulder.
9. In a photo-printing device, the combination of a table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a pair of masks resting on and movable toward and from each other and transversely of said table, a shoulder on one of said transversely movable masks adapted yto act as an abutment for a print, a clamping jaw adapted to clamp down upon lll the print forward of said shoulder, a pair of mas s resting on and movable toward and from each other and longitudinally of the table, and a shoulder on one of said longitudinally movable masks adapted to act as an abutment for the print and at a right-angle to said first-named shoulder.

In a hoto-print device, the combination of a ta le, a negative supporting panel in said table, a.-r cover member adapted to cover said panel, a mask adapted for movement across said table, a clam ing jaw pivoted to said mask and adapted or actuation in one direction by said cover member, and resilient means for returning said jaw to normal position. In a hote-print device, the combination of a ta le, a negative supporting panel in said table, a cover member adapted to cover said panel, a mask adapted for movement across said table, a clamping jaw pivoted to said mask and adapted for actua tion in one direction by said cover member, and resilient means secured to the table and having sliding engagement with the clamping jaw for returning the latter to normal position.
