TURNER ROLL FOR PACKAGE-WRAPPING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS F. THIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turner Rolls for Package- I/Vrapping Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved turner-roll for package wrapping machines.
In certain package wrapping machines in commercial use, there is employed a hollow turner-roll in front of which a sheet of wrapping material is positioned, and then a package is pushed into the turner-roll carrying a bight of the sheet of wrapping material with it. The turner-roll is then rotated, usually 180 degrees, to effect the second fold of the wrapper about the pack age, and then the package is ejected from the turner-roll by another incoming package. When the packages are of considerable depth, an ejected package is sometimes injured by the rotation of the turner-roll because the latter wipes against said ejected package and the ejected package is not free to move away from the turner-roll because a number of packages lies at the head of it and prevents its escape. The main object of the present invention is the production of a turner-roll which will be free from this objectionable feature of such machines. A further object is the production of a turnerroll in which an incoming package is projected beyond its normal position to advance the row of packages ahead of it far enough to provide a clearance for the rotating device and then permitted to come back to its normal position prior to rotation. WVith these and other objects not specifically mentioned in view, the invention consists in certain combinations and constructions which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part-of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the outer casing of the turner-roll; and Fig. 4;

In carrying the invention into effect, there is provided a turner-roll comprising a rotatable outer casing, an inner casing having a limited diametral movement in the outer casing, and means for normally centering the inner casing in the outer casing, said inner casing being adapted to be moved off center in the outer casing by a moving part of the wrapping mechanism in connection with which the device is used. In the best constructions, the centering means is springactuated, and a part of it is carried by the outer casing and a part by the inner casing. These various parts and means may be Widely varied in construction within the scope of the claims, for the particular device selected to illustrate the invention is but one of many possible concrete embodiments of the same. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted to the precise details of the structure shown and described.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates the outer casing of a turner-roll provided with trunnions 6 and 7 journaled in suitable bearings in the frame 8 which is a part of the main frame of the wrapping mechanism in connection with which the device is used. The trunnion 7 carries a pinion 9 in mesh with a gear 10 fast on a shaft 11 extending across the machine and supported in suitable hearings in its frame. The shaft 11 is intermittently rotated by the usual pawl and ratchet mechanism generally indicated by the reference character 12, and operated by a lever 13 fast on a rock shaft 14 extending across the machine and journaled 1n su1table hearings in its frame. By means of this pawl and ratchet mechanism, the outer casing 5 is intermittently rotated in the usual manner.
Mounted within the outer casingo is an inner casing 15 which has a limited diametral movement in said outer'casing, and means are provided for normally centering the inner casing in the outer casing. As shown, this means includes a pair of oppositely disposed studs 1616 mounted in the outer casing and two pairs of oppositely disposed spring-actuated plungers 17 carried by the inner casing, one pair of plungers engaging each of the studs 16. The tension of the springs 18, which operate the plunger 17, is regulated by means of adjusting screws 19 threaded into the inner casing behind the plungers. I
Means are provided for holding packages in position within the inner casing during rotation and, as shown, this mean's'consists of a series of springs 20 screwed fast to opposite walls of the casing.
As usual in machines having a turnerroll, a sheet of wrapping material is fed from a magazine 21 down through a chute 22 into position in front of the turner-roll and in the path of a package being loaded into said turner-roll. As shown, the ma chine is provided with a loading plunger 23 connected by means of a link 24: to an arm 25 fast on the rock shaft 14 before referred to. Secured to the loading plunger 23 are two arms 2626 adapted to engage the inner casing 15 when the loading plunger 23 moves forward. e
As the loading plunger pushes a package with its wrapper into the inner casing 15, the arms 26 come into contact with the end walls of this casing and slide the same forward within the outer casing to the limit of its movement, two of the springs 18 being compressed by this movement. This move ment slightly advances the whole line of packages which have previously been operated upon. The loading plunger then retreats, and this permits the two compressed springs 18 to come into action to move the inner casing back to its normal position wherein it is centered within the outer casing. This slight retreating movement opens up a gap between the forward end of the package in the inner casing and the rear end of the preceding package, which gap is sufficient to permit rotation of the turner-roll without injury to the preceding package. The difliculty heretofore encountered is thus overcome.
