interchangeably discharging the sound from the phonograph record and from the radio receiving set. 7
The amplifying chamber or horn of the phonograph may be utilized and the radio horn or discharge passage connected into the same, a suitable valve being provided for connecting either said radio horn or the tone arm of the phonograph to said amplifying chamber. One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a convenient form of valve and operating mechanism therefor to accomplish this purpose.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more 5 ecifically defined in the claim at the en of the description. I
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of the combined phonograph and radio mechanism constructed substantially in accordance with this invention, the valve being shown in side lines in position for using the phonograph horn or amplifying chamber for discharging the sounds from the radio receiving set, and the position of said valve when the horn is used for discharging the sounds from the phonograph record being indicated in dotted lines, and V Figure 2 is a broken front elevation of the parts as shown in Figure 1.
.The casing of an ordinary phonograph is indicated at 1 in the drawings, and the 1 usual hinged-cover thereof is shown at 2.
A horizontal partition 3 supports the turntable 4 of the phonograph which may be rotated by any suitable motor indicated conventionally by the box 5. A tone arm 6- issupported on the horizontal partition 3 and carries a sound box 7 equipped with a stylus 8 adapted to engage a disk record 9 mounted on the turntable 4, as usual. I
Said tone arm 6 extends downward through the horizontal partition 3 and terminates in a horn or amplifying chamber 10 preferably arranged horizontally in the casing 1 of the phonograph. Above said horn a branch tube 11 extends from the tone arm and carries on its free end a radio receive'r'12. A swinging shutter or valve 13 is pivoted at 14 at the juncture of the tube 11 and vertical portion of the tone arm 6 and adapted to place either said tone arm or said tube 11 in communication with the horn 10. Said valve 13 is actuated through a system of levers 15 by a handle 16 pivoted at 17 on the upper face of the horizontal partition 3 in the phonograph casing in convenient reach of the operator when the cover 2 is raised.
It will be noted that toplace the radio receiver 12 in communication with the horn 10, so that the latter may be utilized for discharging or broadcasting the radio entertainment from said receiver, it is only necessary to raise the handle 16 from the dotted line position to the solid line position indicated in Figure 1, whereupon the valve 13 will be swung upward to cut oif the tone arm 6 from the horn 10 and open the tube 11 extending from the radio receiver 12 to said horn. When the phonograph is to be used in the usual Way, the handle 16 is depressed to the dotted line position shown in Figure 1, whereby the valve is moved, to shut oil the tube 11 from the radio receiver 12 and open communication between the tone arm 6 and thehorn 10.
v I claim:
In a phonograph, the combination with a casing and a horizontal partition therein, of a record turntable mounted on said partition, a tone arm extending through said partition and carrying a sound box to engage a record on said turntable, an amplifying'horn arranged in the phonograph casing below said horizontal partition and forming a continuation of said tone arm, a oted handle mounted on the upper surface radio receiver also arranged in the phonoof said horizontal partition, and a system graph casing below said horizontal partiof levers connecting said handle with said 10 tion, a tube connecting said radio receiver valve for actuatin the latter.
