IMPROVEMENT IN O'RNAMENTING WALLS AND CEILINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,515, dated September 29, 1874; application filed July 13, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PIERRE J. HARDY, of New York city, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Ceilings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a detachable ceiling constructed by my improved method, a portion of the covering being removed, so as to show the arrangement of the supporting-frames; and Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, like views of the central frame and one of the side frames.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The object of my invention is to enable the ceilings and walls of rooms to be covered with a detachable covering which shall be ornamental, cheap, and durable and to this end it consists in the method of covering and decorating the ceilings and interior walls of houses by means of detachable supportingframes, constructed in sections and having their lower or inner sides covered with orannexed drawings, in which- A and A represent the longitudinal rails of one of the sideframes that are secured together in parallel lines by two or more cross-bars, B and B, and at their ends are connected by means of other bars B and B, which have such angles with relation to said rails as to cause them to miter with the like ends of similar frames at the corners of a room, said frames being of such dimensions as to extend around the entire ceiling next to the wall. Within the space at the center of the ceiling that is uncovered by the side frames is fitted a corresponding frame, which is composed of four side rails, O and (J, that are secured together at their ends, and then strengthened by suitable cross-bars D and D, so as to enable it to maintain its shape.

The frames described, which are made of rough boards, are now covered upon their lower sides by oil-cloth, paper, or other suitable materials E, and at their edges, and such other points as may be desired, are secured moldings F and E, which not only serve to ornament the same, butalso cover the joints, and give to said frames, when in position, an appearance of unity. The side frames are now placed in position upon a ceiling, and secured by screws that pass upward into the latter, after which the center frame is in a like manner secured in place, and the whole thus completed.

It may prove advantageous to omit from the frames such of the molding-or ornaments as cover the places where the screws require to be placed for fastening said frames to the ceiling, said moldings and ornaments to be afterward placed in position.

A covering of this construction can be placed in position upon or removed from a ceiling in a short time with slight labor, and without interference with the use of the room. It can be applied directly upon the joists 'of a floor, or the studding of a wall or partition. mentation, is durable, and can be furnished at a much lower cost than is required for the production of an equally good result by other means.
