IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE STOVES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,390, dated September 29, 1874 application filed March 10, 1874.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRIEDRloH SCHMIDT, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Stoves, of which the following is a specification: Y

My invention relates to portable stoves, more especially adapted for cooking in hot weather, or for families who do not desire to keep a constant coal-lire, or who live in single rooms. The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap, durable, and very light portable stove, in which, instead of coal, charcoal is to be used, and for a very few cents a meal can be cooked. At the same time, by having a large air-space surrounding the f'urnacepots, radiation of heat is prevented.

To enable others to make and use the same, I will now more definitely describe it.

In the drawing, A represents the outer shell or case, placed upon short legs B. In the top of the shell are arranged two, more or less, lire or furnace pots, C C', of different sizes, having curved hollow grate-bars c c, upon which the kindling-wood and charcoal are placed, and for a few cents a meal can be cooked. In the side of the shell are arranged sliding doors D D, in guides, by which air can be admitted to the fire, and also the amount of air can be regulated. A short pipe, E, provided with a funnel-shaped mouth and a suitable handle, is placed over the {ire- .pots when it is desired to start a fire, which ignites in a very short time, when the pipe E can be removed and any pot or cooking utensil may be placed on the re; or a tripod, F, may be placed over the furnace when the cooking utensils are too small to cover the hole, or for sad-irons when it is desired to iron clothing. The fire or furnace pots are surrounded by a large air-space, G, in which air freely circulates, and thereby prevents radiation of heat. If it is desired at any time to extinguish the lire a lid, H, as shown in Fig.

3, is placed on the fire-pots, and the sliding doors closed, when the lire will be extinguished in a few moments.

A very important feature of my invention is that, even when the doors or dampers D D are closed, air will be admitted through the spaces left around the tripods F, (shown in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3,) when the cooking utensils are placed thereon, and the fire is thereby fed with fresh air from above.

The entire stove may be made of sheet-iron, or, if desired, of any other metal; or the fire or furnace pots alone may be made of cast or malleable iron and the rest of the stove of sheet-iron.

The great advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by housekeepers, as with very little fuel a hot lire can be produced, and at a very small cost, as with five cents7 worth of charcoal a meal can be cooked for from six to eight persons. In hot weather there is no radiation of heat, and a fire is made a great deal sooner and with less trouble and expense than with coals or wood or gas. There is also no dust and ashes, and therefore it may be used in any room, and is especially useful to sub-tenants or in tenementhouses. There 1s also no danger in setting fire to a house, as the charcoal, as is well known, when it has no draft, will become extinguished valmost instantly.

The stoves may be made larger or smaller, if desired, and of any suitable shape.

I do not broadly claim portable stoves, nor any of the parts herein shown and described separately; but

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Tlie combination of the shell A, tire-pots C C', having hollow grate-bars c c, dampers D D', funnel-pipe E, and tripods F, all constructed and arranged for operation as shown and described.
