IMPROVEMENT IKN COTTON-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,332, dated September 22, 1874; application tiled July 14, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GERsHoM S. MUIR- HEID, of Durant, in the county of Holmes and State of Mississippi, have invented certain Improvements in Cotton and Hay Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view. My improvement relates to that class of inventions which are known as the cotton and hay press.

The nature of my invention consists in constructing the press in two sections, and so connecting them, by means of keyed bars, that one section can be removed and repaired while the other section is left standing', thus dispensing` with the use of nails, screws, Svc. By this means I am enabled to easily transport the press from one portion of the field to another.

The construction and operation of my invention are as follows:

A represents my hay and cotton press, and B the box into which the hay or cotton to be pressed is placed, and which has journaled to its bottom side timbers four wheels, the two rear wheels being on the inside of the timbers, and the two front ones on the outside. B1 is the base-board, upon which the box B rests when pressure is to be applied to the follower. C C and G C are the gallows-posts, and are four in number, two on each side of the press. Each pair of these gallows-posts are fastened at their lower section immediately under the base-board B1 by a keyed bar, b, and are prevented from slipping from or toward the box by means of recesses cut in the sides ofthe base-board. These keyed bars b b also sustain the base-board B1 in position. These gallows-posts also are so constructed that they shall taper from their` lower section to their top, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, which gives additional strength and support to the press, and are far preferable to the perpendicular gallows-posts. The gallows-posts C C are joined at their top by means of a cross-bar, c, while the gallows-posts C O are joined by a like cross-bar, c1. In each of these cross-bars c c1 is cut one-half of a female screw-thread, the two cross-bars being fastened by keys c2 c2 on each side of the screw-thread, and thus forming a head for the screw. By this construction I am enabled to tighten or loosen the screw, as occasion may require. D D are bars located on the base-board B1, immediately outside of the gallows-posts, and assist in retaining them in position. D D are bracebars, which extend from near the top ot' the gallows-posts to notches ont in the ends of the bars D D, and serve as additional supports to the gallows-posts. To the base-board B1 and immediately under the position occupied by the box B when it is ready to receive the plunger, are secured the rear ends ot' two iianged bars, E E. The forward or front ends of these bars are secured to a cross-bar, E', attached to the forward ends of the bars D D. The bars E E are located at such distance apart that when the boxB is moved backward or forward its inner or rear wheels e e shall rest against the iianges c e of the bars E E. These bars E E are also provided with countersunk holes, in which the wheels of the box B rest when it is in position to receive the plunger. To the bottom of the box B is attached a tongue, B2, by means of which the box is drawn forward to receive the cotton or hay to be pressed. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The press-frame A, composed of two sections and constructed as described, in combination with the. box B, having wheels and a tongue, B2, the Whole arranged substantially as set forth.
