IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-GUARDS FOR WHEELS OF VEHICLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,276, dated September 22, 1874; application filed August 1, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES B. WINOHELL, of Benton Harbor, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Guard for Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact'description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal sectional View of my axleguard. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view, of the same.

This invention has for its object the improvement of the sandguard for vehicles for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me, bearing date on the 4th day of November, 1873.

The nature of my present invention consists in a tubular flanged cap, which, when it is secured to the inner or butt end of a hub, will extend over the axle-collar and prevent sand, mud, &c., from getting upon the axle-arm also, in the combination of the tubular guard with the collar or band on the hub; also,'in extending a portion of the axle-stock over the tubular guard for the purpose of scraping ofi' mud and sand and keeping the parts clear, as will be hereinafter explained.

and of such length, as to receive in it the collar g on the axle, and to extend well over this collar, as shown in Fig. 1; and externally the guard E is made tapering for the purpose of more readily shedding Water, sand, and mud which may get inside of the flange D. The flange and its guard are secured to the buttend of the hub by means of screws or other fastenings.

For the purpose of scraping mud, 850., out of the annular space between the guard E and flange I), I utilize a portion, 0, of the stock 0, which is made to fit over the guard E, and which will keep the same clear.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The axle-guard consisting of the exterior flange D, the inner flange E, and their connecting-plate d, substantially as specified.

2. The scraper 0, combined with the flange D and guard E, substantially as described.
